There is an invisible Turbo Lift Shaft ? The USS Titan seems to suffer the same problem as does the USS Phoenix, and Steam Runner class - seems to barely have enough space for a turbo loft shaft to the deflector pod. I guess they must have very small turbot lift pods to get around the struts. who knows perhaps even the Enterprise Refit had such shafts too. Just look at the Norway class with what seems like really thin wings - I wonder what is inside them too. I guess the bigger you make a ship the more likely the skinny areas have enough space for the Turbo lifts of a usable deck. Is there actually even usable space in an Akira class's struts ? What about the right angled struts on a Ambassador class or a Excelsior class ? Can someone walk around inside some parts of them ?

Yes I think they did it on purpose like that so it's a secure area - but One would hope it has some other way too ( I think I did hear mention of an extendable access tube somewhere)

I actually always thought you enter the ship via the Arms that attach to the Left and Right side on the deflector. So you arn't actually attracting to the defector. This would mean that you enter like you do on other Starfeet Ships on the side. This makes sense because a Klingon Birds of Prey docks with the station and if you remember in Star Trek 4. The Birds of prey have airlocks on the side on the forward torpedo bay.

I'll go as far as to say perhaps those arms are the walkways and moorings! The airlock is cleverly fitted to the sides of the Defiant's nose. Just like the runabout doors you see in the Q episode! It would make a little more sense since you could double the amount of people coming and going if you had two exits on either side! Plus, if you look at the two orange squares next to DECK 2, those could be "Freight Doors" Either way, I'll go with Deep Space Nine has Airport moving walkways that are also claws. That makes sense! Well, enough to make me happy anyway.

Indeed I don't ever remember them talking about shuffling ships around because of an inability to dock at the ring or pylons yet random gamma quadrant ships can dock there with ease like Tosks ship so there must be some sort of less ridged moving port adapter.

Ferengi Rule of Acquisition - “Don’t think about it.” Think about the Klingon Bird of Prey. Even the station and DS9 and the internal plans aren’t right. The Defiant is mostly 2 decks with 3 in some places, for the emergency shuttle/escape pod.

Obviously there are corresponding Iconian gateways just outside of camera view on both the Defiant and DS9 that allows these two points to connect...This overly complicated use of technology to solve a simple problem is what inspired the Jem'Hadar rebels to seek out the technology in season 4 after the female Vorta discovered it's existence in "The Search".

It's possible (though a bit convoluted..) that the deflector array pulls back, and a docking assembly descends and moves forward.. Possibly a flexible tube or some kind. It's also possible that what we see externally are shots of it just arriving and just leaving.. And it likely takes a moment for everything to move into place. But... This is all just speculation and wishful thinking on my part..

And the communications. How is it that any two ships can talk to each other? Even on earth we have compatibility issues with video encoding. And how is it that when you call someone on your own ship, the communicators already know who you're talking to? In one episode of voyager ("the cloud") we see Tuvok call "Tuvok to Kim", and simultaneously hear his voice come through Kim's comm badge, before Tuvok had even said Kim's name.

The communicator part probably ties into the universal translator. Basically the computer is always monitoring everyone's pending vocalizations and simultaneously translates and routes the message in the fraction of a second between you deciding what to say and the words actually coming out. Why they still need to press buttons to fly the ship if they can read a brain in that much detail I have no explanation for.

Simply put it's just a standard in the same way that we have any kind of international standard in today's world. If you're a race in the alpha quadrant that values commerce and trade then you need to ensure your vessels or dry docks can accomodate as many different races as possible. Therefore you end up with a standardised docking system. We already kind of had this in real life. The Russian space program and NASA has to decide a standard for docking for joint missions. The ISS being the clear example.

Great video as always! In the DS9 technical manual it shows that a lot of the normal facets of a starship are hidden under armour panels on the Defiant. For example there are NO escape pods visible on the ship until eps like Valiant where we see that large panels fold back or slide open to reveal them underneath. I've always just accepted that when the Defiant docks with the station, the top edge of the Deflector Pod (where the NX-74205 text is) just slides back to reveal a hidden airlock behind it. Totally makes sense and would keep a vulnerable hatch at the front of the ship protected. Of course there are a hundred other issues with DS9 like the error of the scale with the Ent D docked in the pilot (it should be almost twice the size they show it and take up almost the entire upper docking space but oh well....lol). Keep up the great work

I like my explanation... part of the deflector array folds inward to reveal a hidden main hatch and access way built with the deflector built all around the hatch and access way. Better security to have a hidden hatch that will keep the Borg and any other intruders guessing how to physically board the ship. As for why it is not seen in the side view schematic. Because it is not visible from the side because of other equipment in that area. On a top view chart it would be seen as a void within all of the deflector equipment. The only time you would see the deflector opening inward would be right before it docked and soon as the ship disengages from the air and is clear a few meters the deflector would swing into it's working position and thus hiding the hatch. If the defiant docked this way every thing in cannon is feasible. The only thing is they never talked about the hidden hatch because of security concerns. Well how about that????

I just wanted you to know that I really enjoy Junkball Media. I'm glad that your making videos again as there are times I haven't laughed so hard (like your review of STIII and how the Klingon couldn't "cling on" to the cliff of the Genesis planet... But seriously, I've always just assumed because of the irregular shape of the Defiant you can't just place a standard docking port on the side like a traditional starship. As they had to get creative they placed it in the navigational deflector, but because Defiant is a close range fighting ship, not like a traditional starship that fires at its target from some distance away and general evades the Target's explosion, if an actual airlock door isn't definable then they likely put it behind a heavy duty blast door. The blast door protects the airlock door from debry encountered during dogfighting. Then during docking in either one or two parts it'd swing aside to allow the actual airlock door to operate. Also the docking mechanism allows entry and egress through the navigational deflector only while the deflector is powered down or in standby and is likely armored to protect against errant radiation from the deflector.

The portion of the hull that opens out is very well blended so you don't see the join when it's shut.

So, the ring on the middle holds the ship and the two arms extending to either side is where the doors are. There are port and starboard doors, not a fore door. In your drawing it is right next to "2" and before that 2 pops up 1:38, there was a guy standing right next to the orange door on the blue print. You aren't looking at the interior of the Defiant at 1:00, thats the inner wall of the 2 door airlock of DS9. At least this is all how it played out in my mind.

  • @thoruszwolf4153
    @thoruszwolf41533 жыл бұрын

My Theory is that the airlock access is in one, or both, of the extending arms, as everytime people are seen getting onto the Defiant, they turn a corner to go down a short hallway, rather than the airlock being on the side of the main corridor.

  • @mewimi

Logically speaking one would assume that the docking clamps merely hold the ship in place and the airlock security measures are for transporter clearance. It would make sense since airlocks already have the security detection hardware installed.

I always just assumed that the deflector assembly retracted and flipped down so that the docking tether (Orange triangle on the middle deck?) could extend and mate with the station's docking port. Given how fiddly something like that would have been to film, I quietly ignored the issue and pretended like they cut the scenes to just before or after the transition.

If you don't mind me suggesting a topic - Have you considered the Visual evolution of 21st/22nd Century designs from Phoenix to Nx-Alpha to Warp Delta to Intrepid to NX-01 etc.. I was looking at the models of them and it's kinda visually interesting to look at the progression - anyway I thought i'd bring it up in case you saw some merit as a possible subject for a video.

The closest I've come to that timeframe was a USS Franklin vs. NX-01 video I was working on right after Spock's Marshmallow Dispenser in summer 2017. That got derailed when I moved apartments then immediately got the flu. I need to circle back to that one.

Ok ; Lets see what else I can suggest... Videogame specific ship videos A FASA or Starfleet Battles retrospective a CD Rom game retrospective on things like Star Trek Klingon & Borg games. A general retrospective on old Star Trek Games from board games through early videogames (like the Vectrex) to The early adventure games and so on (might be a multi-parter like your Super-suit vids). A Crazy Kitbash video might mention the yeager or things like the Intrepid class variant that has a Constitution like Saucer on it or other oddities like the Niagra class. If you own them eventually - perhaps a Video showing off your eaglemoss ships by theme or era. As to non Star trek Topics - how about a series on old sci fi Movies that have an interesting vehicle of space ship in them (to many to list). But something a bit obscure just so people feel educated and informed.

0:33 Probably an optical illusion, but it looks like a tube extends under the forward section, and could be used for docking.

I love the burn marks on the concept art. I don't know if a ship in space would get those. I'm guessing the concept was implied to have a lot of atmospheric use as well.

It's a side port. On 1:34 it's the door to the left of the man on deck two. At 2:54 there's also what could be a port near that corresponding area.

The docking pylon port connection is on a slight swivel. When docking, the nose tips up or down, then the port opens up and at the port and starboard of the cone front, allowing a single person to exit either end, but only when transformed into a polygon docking port. Doesn't explain the visual in the airlock though. The model nose does slightly shift up or down. Cloaking?

I always figured that umbilicals extended to the SIDES of the pod from the two arms. There are round markings on the sides (see 1:06).

I want to make a note.... there are ports could be on the side of the front pod. Represented on the studio model by somewhat flattened Darleck bumps. pause video at 1:09 for reference. Note: this is a guess and I really don't know.

Easy: there is a plate that goes over the docking portion of the nav pod. The hatch is located toward the center bottom. The ship is built for war, after all. And, not every single thing is shown on the master readout.

This reminds me of when I built ships with Lego's and I would imagine the lights and ports... ds9 was grown men playing with great new tools.. one of the first show to have major cgi every episode.... like when I found out I could combine legos with megablocks to make my own creations.

Makes you wonder if the refit that dock with an Iconian Gateway that's locked to a spot on the Defiant, but it only works close range due to power constraints. Or, as Kryten from Red Dwarf would point out, "We could use the teleporter." Putting a transporter into that airlock would be an easy answer, beaming them into the docked Defiant. Why they would do it that way wouldn't make sense, but whatever. The only other option would be using replicator tech to reconfigure the hull after the docking clamps are secured to make the actual airlock connection.
