    I despise flying, but I took JetBlue to Louisiana a few months ago and was shocked that the internet on the plane was not only free, but fast. I had no issues watching KZread in HD, and rich web pages loaded reasonably fast. It actually weirded me out because I hadn't flown in such a long time and I figured plane wireless would be slow and we're lucky enough to be able to read an email on it... Guess that's sort of the case most of the time, didn't know JetBlue was a leader there.

  • @ninerlives
    @ninerlives4 ай бұрын

    I never understood why so many people complain about air travel, as the introduction of this video highlights. Sure, you can drive from NY to LA- I’ve done it when I had to move, but it took a WEEK, had to get multiple hotel rooms, had to spend a LOT on gas and food, got a flat tire, almost ran out of gas in Utah where there were no gas stations for over 100 miles, etc. You are literally sitting in the sky at 38,000 feet in an engineering MARVEL, getting from point A to B in a matter of HOURS instead of DAYS. Sure, security is a pain, but usually it’s only 10-15 minutes. Sure, you have to sit in a rather small seat next to strangers, etc. But COME ON!! Air travel is so convenient and fast compared to driving. It completely boggles my mind how ungrateful most people are for aviation, the engineers, the baggage handlers, the flight attendants, the ticket agents, the gate agents, the pilots, who have dedicated their lives to this incredible form of travel- not to mention the SAFEST form of transportation. Sure, things go wrong occasionally, but there’s over 200,000 flights per day worldwide. The media swarms on any mishap. Oh and I forgot to mention- yes, you have WiFi on board since people have absolutely no attention span longer than a goldfish these days.

The free service was way better than my copper ADSL back at home.. it was incredible and free (also frustrating of how a plane in the sky could have faster free internet than me at my house back un Uruguay...) one of the reasons I had and will keep flying with them in every domestic flight i need in the states.

    They wouldn't really be able to spy on you much more, it's just providing faster internet to people, and in more places, so pretty much it's just 4G, or something, but more speed, and available more widely, and you could go to the top of mount everest and get a connection. Also why do people care if the government spies on us, yea it feels creepy, but 1) it finds people doing illegal things, which I'm fine with, but people who do those things aren't. 2) they can't possibly spy on everyone, then watch what they are doing, the u.s government had 2.8 million employees in 2009, even if that's 5 million and ALL of them were constantly watching the rest of the population (318.9, in 2014) that would be about 65 people per person that works in the government, and they would have to watch all of them. 3) A lot of what they find is probably something that you'd be willing to tell anyone, like your favorite youtuber, etc, They already have information on a bunch of things like taxes, name, address, etc. Honestly I don't care what they know about me as long as they don't give it all out to everyone.

    I am a RF/microwave engineer, meaning I design the amplifiers Linus is talking about and deal with these frequencies and transmissions a lot. I have a few critiques. First, Ka and Ku bands are just pronounced with the two letters, e.g. K-A. The a stands for above and the u stands for under, and they delineate above or below the K-band, which is 18-27 GHz. (The bands get quite confusing actually) Second, moving from Ku- to Ka-band will get more bandwidth due to the higher frequency (Usually the same percentage of bandwidth is attainable, so moving up gives you more), but it will not save you power. As you move up in frequency, amplifiers and antennas get physically smaller, but the efficiency of transistors decreases. So for the same output power, moving up in frequency will cost you more DC power. Lastly, the amplifier does not weigh much at all, and the antenna probably doesn't either. I doubt size or weight is that big of a concern for the construction of the plane (but I'm not certain). Hope this helps a little.

    Jeremy Williamson Depends on flight route, they have to stay within a set flight altitude for a reasonable distance from the airport for ATC coordination and what not, that also may be the altitude range for wireless phone towers, after switching of control and reaching cruising altitude however, only the airplane antenna and SAT phones are able to maintain connectivity, cell phone antennae just aren't sensitive enough by that point

    my ipad gets enough signal at cruising altitude to browse the internet (not video) on most flights i have been on my phone gets enough signal to send and receive text messages but only if i am holding up to the window and if the tower is on that side of the plane the best way to get cheap and usable internet on a plane is to plug 3G/LTE USB dongle into your laptop with an external antenna wedged between the window and window shade using a jacket to hide the cable and enjoy using your limited data cap while the other suckers are paying for slow and expensive inflight internet just be careful the FA doesnt see you setting it up because it is against regulations

    I flew Jetblue in Oct. During my testing, I managed to get WiFi speeds of about 15-25 mb/s. Sadly, it was too unstable and not good enough to maintain a stream from from Netflix of Hulu. Bit it was great for web surfing. There was a upgrade option, but I did not try it.

    Actually well north of 100 megabytes per second. Ka-band systems are well proven on cruise ships with thousands of passengers and still allowing a bandwidth of 3+ megabits per second per user.

    Yeah, but the flights are quite often crowded. We have 100 Mbps here technically, as well as 40 Mbps upload, but we usually reach anywhere between 20 to 80 down.

    Qantas just has huge hard drives full of movies on their own network. Last I checked there were 1200 movies and I think 10,000 songs as well as in flight wifi. (The inflight wifi only worked on the Tablet things in the seats though.)
