How DO you test that your Auto Darkening welding helmet is working safely? 🤔 - Super Simple!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Not all auto darkening masks have a test button...
This video shows how to test that your welding helmet is functioning correctly BEFORE you fry your eyeballs with a character building slice of arc!

I had no idea this would work - but it does!!! All these years wondering if the batteries were shot or some other gremlin had attacked my helmet ... No more throwing away old TV buttons when I get a new TV. They will be going in my welding box to take with me wherever I go. THANKS YOU FOR A GREAT TIP!

This is amazing and terrible: almost 1400 views and only 50 likes. People are So inconsiderate.

It’s a fair point, but as a creator in KZread you have to be thick skinned and wise to the fact that a lot of folks are watching without being logged in, so can’t “like” long form content; I’m just happy that people are watching and learning from my videos :) thank you for your like though! Very much appreciated 😊
I just tried your great tip on my auto darkening helmet I will try to do this every time before welding as you suggest arc eyes is not something I want to repeat. Say hello to big Larry in the background I have his twin brother here. Thanks for this.

Thanks for this short, to the point test, I haven't used my helmet in a year after finishing a project then followed by winter temps. My bench is on my apartment patio. My concern, of course, is the auto dimming on my Ironton Helmet. This test will confirm it's status... TIG Torches Up!!!

The lense of a welding hood is opaque to the most damaging forms of light (UV and IR). While uncomfortable your eyes will not be immediately damaged by the visible light if your lens fails to darken.

This is indeed true - but being temporarily blinded (dazzled) by an unshielded arc flare is no joke… especially in an environment where fire is always a possibility

@@bigtalltim Guess I play things a little fast and loose, last time an auto darkening lense failed, I put sunglasses on under the hood and continued.
wow u r truly a genius, that was extremely helpful, it is suh a gr8 way to test after repairing it as the normal light is really misleading , it makes it flicker and i thought the lens is faulty!

I haven't reached for my helmet in some time now, since I don't weld by trade, and was wondering if you could do this. I don't recall this ever being talked about in school either. Thanks for sharing, now I can get to repairing pin holes in my pillar frame so the new wind shield can be installed on the ol' XJ, without having to worry about getting arc flashed.

I wish I knew this sooner. I just had to deal with some helmet malfunctioning today, and it's VERY irritating!

Very good idea, here. Just make sure your remote works. Take one from your living room, which you are actually using. Not an "old" one. Test it on your television First, Before testing your helmet. Sh*t happens.

Cheers - when I said old, I just meant the old style with an LED on the end… some modern ones work by Bluetooth, and wouldn’t trigger the visor to darken ! Thanks for watching 😊
I just change the batteries in the helmet every year. Only a few $$$ to protect your eyes.

Always a good idea @sptrader but not all helmets have batteries - this one is purely solar powered!

Changing the batteries annually is a good idea, like you say, Chump Change". But,that is Not a failsafe. Sh*t happens and you don't want it to happen to your eyes. 😱😭😎 It's a 2 minute test. Just make sure your remote works. Take one from your living room, which you are actually using. Not an "old" one.

Mine failed with batteries in and won’t work with new ones or old ones and both sets measured 3V on meter. Sad also as it’s an optrel. Didn’t last through many welds, glad I don’t have to rely on it for employment. Expensive but still can and will fail like everything human.
Just an FYI, even if the auto darkening function doesn't trigger, 100% of UV and IR will still be blocked and you will be safe. The worst that will happen is you'll be dazzled by visible light from the arc. Very annoying, but not dangerous. Like looking directly at a camera flash, that's all.

Well… not quite 100%, and being dazzled is no joke either - especially if you need to do hundreds of tacks on super thin metal instead of running a seam. You are quite correct that the majority of helmets give up to the equivalent of shade 15 glass protection regardless of dimming, but in terms of effective and safe welding, I maintain that testing every time is essential - you need to be able to see around you immediately in case of fire etc…
