No, "croûton" is correct. I'm a native French speaker and most people I know use "croûton" as well. And yes, they are French, no doubt about that.

Indeed some people in France use "croûton" instead of "quignon" or "quignon de pain", I don't know if it is regional such as for "pain au chocolat" and "chocolatine". Anyway "croûton" also means something else, that is a small piece of toasted cubed bread used into soups or Caesar salad for instance; which is the only meaning to me

Peanut butter is way more common in the USA. Here in France there's no "peanut butter culture". Instead we eat bread with butter, confiture or Nutella.
