I always look with some envy at your homestead and view, but really glad you like my country. Makes me look at it in a fresh new way. as a carpenter, I do a lot of work in those very old crooked houses (I avoid new buildings). the first thing you do is put aside your levels and squares. It is more like shipbuilding, only they are as crooked on both sides.

I went to the Netherlands a dozen times or so between 1980 and, I think, 2004 was the last time I was there, while working for Philips. I always found it a delightful country to visit. One time flying there just 3 weeks after the 9-11 attacks in 2001. Which caused me a great deal of trouble since scheduled flights were still being canceled during my trip there and back. The first time I was there I stayed in Geldrop, just outside of Eindhoven. There is a windmill there. The caretaker told me there used to be a sister windmill next to it, but it had been dismantled, shipped to Holland, Michigan, where it was reassembled. If you've not been there before, being a wood worker & for other reasons, you may find the the Batavia Werf, and the Polder Museum, ( now called something else I think) just outside of Lelystad interesting. The VOC ship Batavia on it's maiden voyage to Indonesia in 1629 ran aground and sank on low islands west of Australia. Where conspirators who were already planning to mutiny murdered many people. It's regarded as the bloodiest mutiny in maritime history. The story is well told in Mike Dash's book Batavia's Graveyard. The last time I was there was late May, and I took my family. Because that spring the weather had been cold the flowers had bloomed late, we just had time to see the Keukenhof flower gardens because it had been extended one week. Now should be prime time to see it. It is just outside of Leiden. Birthplace of Rembrandt. Enjoy the Dutch Shoarma. One of the foods I miss the most. Indeed, I have several bags of spices I need to mix (from a Dutch recipe) so I can make my own Dutch style Shoarma. Something I haven't made for 3 or four years. yummy. btw, and fwiw. I found your YT channel because several days ago I was looking for videos on Orienteering, I found your Orienteering video, then found your Poor Man's Carpenter's Bench series, that I just finished watching. That I enjoyed very much.

Your comment on the beauty of the brickwork, "There's no other reason to do this than to make it look beautiful." And it certainly is a good enough reason, but, Cody, I can think of at least two more. The first being to show off the skill of the mason, who may get other work by being so skillful, and two, if you want to have a smooth faced abutment (covered in sod) that is a very good way to do it. the sod wouldn't lay so well or easily on a notched brick surface that you would get by just ending the courses in half brick style. Clever Dutch, thanks Wringlerstars.

My husband is from the Netherlands, love visiting there, in warmer weather. The country side is beautiful when the tulips are in bloom, looks like carpet of many colors! Riding bikes over there is a way of life, most only own one car. Plus it is a lot easier to ride everywhere there, because it is flat. Bikes have the right of way. Most places have bike lanes. Enjoy your visit, hubby will be going to visit family next week.

Yup... NL is the 30st most densely populated country in the world. Denser than India and Haiti. Thank goodness they wisely have a more sustainable model with all the cycling and great public trans. What's interesting is that since the Dutch apparently cluster tightly in the major cities, there all sorts of rural or quiet bike trips you can take in the countryside. Worlds away from Amsterdam. I remember taking one trip where we passed through a designated "quiet zone" with old homes with thatched roofs. The only thing I could hear was the wind...

When looking at the 'Nachwacht' it is important to look at the light which is, strangely, shone on the girl. It's something every Dutch kid (like myself) at one point learns. Because the light isn't supposed to shine on the girl. The painting was commissioned by the militia (schutters) of a certain city, so they were supposed to have the light shone on them (after all you put the commisioner in the spotlight no?). Rembrandt decided to experiment with a new technique/concept and instead put the light on the girl to create an interesting play on the light. Welcome to the Netherlands. Amsterdam is not the best city we have to offer I'm afraid but it's definitely a good place to go.

The stern piece shown at 1:49 is actually the stern piece of the HMS Royal Charles. It was the flagship of the British navy, named after the current king. But in the Raid on the Medway during 1667, we (the Dutch) captured the ship, along with some others, and burned a big part of the fleet down.

theye built the mill on a mountains to catch more wind . because the houses were dissertation the wind if the mill was built on ground level. but you got two options. you can build a mill with a balcony or you make a mountain of dirt around it .

a horticulturist nearby has his fruit trees trimmed and groomed to shape the canopy like an umbrella. Granted they are dwarf trees so they wont ever grow very tall but they do make picking fruit easier.

Loved seeing these countries. Thanks. As an Army brat growing up we lived in Germany 4 1/2 yrs. and we travelled to many of the places you are now at. Unlike America, it looks like a lot has not changed. It is still raining here in Oregon- not missing a thing!

Was the mill build on a mount because there is more wind up higher or was it so that the rest was underwater and they used the mill to get rid of the water?

At 1:50, on the Coat of Arms, it is written in French "Dieu et mon droit", which can be translated in English as "God and my right". This Coat of Arms looks a lot like the one of the Monarch of the United Kingdom. I would think it was devised when an old French dialect was in use at the Court, in the Middle Ages.

I think we should construct a Windmill on the Homestead. We'll start by creating the mound for the foundation. The ultimate timber framing project!

Interesting idea.. You might want to check out "spinnenkopmolen" (a small type of windmill that evolved from the "wipmolen" which evolved from the postmill). Due to their size, they are fairly easy to construct, and I've seen them with belt-pulley-systems to do a range of tasks, from grinding wheat to sawing wood to producing electricity. Originally they were used to pump water.

Oh you mean windpumps or windmotors. These do great for pumping water indeed. Milling grist or sawing wood, not so much, though. But I consider them marvelous machines, since they were the first windpumps that can be left unattended.
