Ron de Jong He did make some valid points, only he was totally wrong bout Dutch not being creators, think of the invention of the stock exchange, Dutch design, the submarnine, ECG (Electrocardiograph), the speedcamera (sadly is a Dutch invention),the compact cassette, the DVD etc etc.

***** Well Heineken isn't an invention as such, beer/pilsner was already invented. idk bout the keeper-gun, but if you say so, im sure it's Dutch too, but the Fennek is a German/Dutch invention, so you're semi-right on that one.

Being Dutch, but living in Brazil for over 12 years, this video brought a smile on my face. The Netherlands is a small country, but people from the north are 100% different from people in the south (Friesland-Maastricht). The biggest truth in this video that we are very direct. In our opinion it is being honest but if you are not used to it, you might experience it as being rude. Let me show you the other side; for the last 12 years I have been living in Brazil. In your face they will tell any lie, to make you feel comfortable, and I will feel ridiculed. In the beginning I would tell people Brazilians are false, like the Dutch are rude. It has nothing to do with being false or rude.... it has to do with our upbringing on how to interact with other people. And (probably because of my Dutch upbringing) if I am wearing a very ugly tie, I prefer my colleague to point out to me that it is hideous so I will never wear it again, instead of people (trying to be polite; not false) giving me compliments about the damn thing. Another true statement is that it is "hard" to get invited to someones house in The Netherlands and even if you are the best friend, you are expected to call before you come over. And you might be my best friend, but if I do not feel having company, I will tell you that I want to be be alone... and my best (Dutch) friend will not be offended; he will understand. Off course in emergencies you will be available 24/7 for your friends and even acquaintances! Again, this might look rude... but let me show you the other side again; for the last 12 years I have been living in Brazil. When in the morning I wake up around 10 AM (I have to admit, I like to sleep till noon!), I get dressed and go back to sleep. Why I get dressed??? Well, some "friend" might stop by (1 - I "xx" friends; In brazil after a couple of drinks, everybody is your friend; in The Netherlands we say that in your whole life, you are considered lucky to have one or two real friends). In The Netherlands, you know nobody will stop by, because they have not called you! And I have no problem if because of that, we are cold or rude...... I now know from experience, nobody likes it if you stop by unannounced, but they will put up with it (you...) The first time we threw a party in our house in Brazil, inviting about 20 acquaintances (a Brazilian would say 20 friends), we ended up having about 40 guests, because the people we invited, called their friends and invited took them to our party. Many times I opened our door and people I had never seen walked in, and a couple of hours later walked out, without even saying "hi" to me or my wife.... We do think we are entitled to our own opinion and we do think we have the right to say and think what we want (and we think that everybody has that right). If in your opinion that is a bad thing, you are probably a religious extremist, or just crazy. Now, the comic relief in the video... the cookie jar... I might be wrong, and if I am I do apologise, I think people are repeating something they heard or read. The only time I saw the jar was when I was a child, visiting my grandparents (early 1970's) and they did have the jar.... they opened it and after you took a (one) cookie, they closed it and left it on the table; for me and my younger brother to take as many as we wanted (true, every time we wanted one, we politely asked first, education.... a bad thing) until our parents stopped my grandparents, because they did not wanted us to get sick in the car. The rain guy... I am sorry, I have no response to him. Waiters being rude, and tell you to wait..... For sure everybody can have a bad experience with any waiter in every country.... And yes, sometimes the waiter makes the hand sign meaning "I noticed you, I cannot come over right now, but I will be with you as soon as possible".... If the place is crowded... that's the way it is..... But you know that you were noticed, and you will be served as soon as possible.... Here in Brazil, they acknowledge your "cry for attention" with a smile, and forget you 5 seconds later. Dutch people are not rude; we will tell you like it is (in our opinion), and if you prefer to be lied to and have smoke being blowed up your arse, you will be disappointed in The Netherlands. You will be welcome most of the times, and you will be received well because your visit is appreciated, but call first.... if you do not, your visit might be experienced as a social obligation. I think the best interview in the video was with the Italian guy (Tommy, cook/drummer)..... He said some of his best friends are Dutch..... combine that to an other persons comment, who said that maybe after two years without any contact, you call up this person and ask him to lent you his bike, the answer is yes.... So, in conclusion, I think that if you have a Dutch person who considers you as his friend, you are lucky; you will have a loyal friend for life (and I think that it not only a Dutch quality, but that it is true for most or all north European people; Germans, Swiss, Scandinavians etcetera). If you have problems dealing with reality.... If you cannot handle (constructive) criticism and want to take all the cookies the moment the cookie jar is in front of you (and open!!!!!)... I do not condemn your opinion. You are still welcome. Please do visit us... but with an open mind, evaluating all your prejudices against Dutch people.... you might be surprised learning you will kinda like our ways.... and if not... well.... you gave it a try... no harm done.... you will not be forced to visit The Netherlands ever again!!!!!

Also same with inviting people in your house/unannounced guests. For me it's like common sense that you call before you come over - I never even open the door if I'm not waiting on anyone, lol. My house is my personal space, a home, so you gotta be a good friend to get in, like obv... Also about who you call a friend - I think you're lucky if you have 1 friend for your whole life, so. Looks like I'd love it in Holland... Brazil being my worst nightmare lol I'd hate everyone.

Rene i have been doing my family tree it turns out they were Dutch they were called the Van Cortlandt's! In fact my ancestors were one of the first settlers in New York and my ancestor was the major of New York at one point. If you go to New York, there is a museum of my ancestors where they use to live and there is a park streets and a train station named after them. I found this video interesting i would say i have alot of the traits that i mentioned on here.

So to sum up, Dutch: - are Blunt/honest - are Proud - feel they have the right to do what they want. - don't like to be told what to do. - feel they have a right to their opinion and vent it. - don't randomly smile to eachother on the street. - don't like chitchat, just want to get straight to the point. - don't want you to open their coockie bin without consent. I completely agree with it and see it as a good thing. We are by definition individuals and just do whatever we want to, seems to work doesn't it? You need to learn that the coockie that comes with the coffee is a gift, we give you this one coockie cause we are fond of you. If we like you very much, we might even give you an extra coockie. But don't insult our tolerance by deciding for yourself how much we should like you by picking a random amount of coockies! Buy your own you cheap bastard!

+Kayleigh Drevis Were you born in the Netherlands? If you were, you would've known that if you're a waitress here, your salary isn't solely built up from tips. You get proper salary, in countries such as the USA etc, you do encounter getting paid from solely tips. In the Netherlands this is not the case at all. I'm not saying everyone who works here is rude to customers, but it does happen a lot.

A few things were not true. But I guess that could also be blamed on a few bad experiences a particular individual had. I have friends in the USA who love the service in the Netherlands - especially in the restaurants - while one of the women in the video doesn't. I do really recognize the being straight forward and not beating around the bush. I also recognize the stereotypes the Dutch like to have, but 90% of them are meant as jokes. Most people are aware of the fact that stereotypes are nonsense.

I'm Dutch and I must say this is all quite true, even the negative things. But we're also very helpfull and friendly (most of us at least). If you're lost in a city or you can't find something, just ask it! Almost everyone in the Netherlands can speak English and we will show you the way. No problem. If you don't know how something works. Ask! We will help you out. But if you don't ask, don't expect us to help you. Same with the waitress thing. Waitresses won't ignore you like someone in this video said, but they won't ask you if you want something more to drink every second. Dutch people like their privacy and they will find it annoying if a waitress would come over to them every minute, that's why they don't do that. But if you need anything, just sign at the waitress. Wave at the waitress, and if she doesn't see it just yell "waitress!". She will come up to you and asks you what you want. Don't be shy. Be straight forward. That's how Dutch people are and what we would like you to be

I actually don't think this is what the Netherlands are like. Amsterdam is the rudest city of the Neths. Visit Amsterdam for a week, then go to Rotterdam, you'll see this is NOT what the Neths are like. We don't hate refugees, it's like one person, which is important hates them. I think the Netherlands is a safe country, we aren't that rude. But I have to say, we are ruder than people from like the UK. We only want the best for ourselves. We actually are selfish.

  • @lexievv

What you say is partly right, but alot of people perhaps not hate refugees but the people from morocco (mostly the younger ones) aren't liked, this is mostly because of the way they behave here. Alot of dutch people have the thought that they can come here and they are welcome here but now they try to change things and are really annoying, some people are even scared when they see a group of them and tend to walk around. So it's not necessarily that they hate them but alot of dutch people don't like them for some very clear reasons ^^ (this has nothing to do with racism because if it are dutch people doing these things they would be disliked too)

Eileen Malenstein Well, I think you actually mixed up Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Rotterdam is known for the rude people who scold with for instance; cancer. In Rotterdam, the PVV (a racist political pary) is the largest party. So the part about the refugees isn't true. Amsterdam is known as a rich city with stingy people but that is based on nothing. Well, perhaps it is based on Ajax the best and most fortunate footbalclub of Holland which makes every fan of another footbalclub jealous. But I think, especially Amsterdam is one of the cities in which refugees have the opportunity to get a warm welcome. Rotterdam is the opposite

I am an Englishman who has lived in Holland for 2 years with his Dutch girlfriend so I think I am in a bit of a good position to offer an informed comment. Before I do, however, I think that it is important to point out that you only ever judge another culture by the standards of your own. I think it is interesting that the Bulgarian guy thought that dutch people need to be friendlier. I, coming from England, see Dutch people as almost oppressively friendly and socially intrusive. Our own cultures inevitably pepper our experience with other cultures. But, having said that, this is what I have to say about dutch people. First off, I would have to say that there is absolutely such a thing as "what dutch people are like". Dutch people are very social people with a unwritten cultural policy of adherence to societal norms. This is in contrast to English and American culture where the most important thing is to be individual and eccentric. That is one thing that struck me most about the Dutch and I don't think it is healthy. Dutch people are happy to be normal and this I think leads to an apathy toward new things. For example, dutch people still use outdated internet tools like zoover and marktplaats despite the obvious superiority of Ebay and TripAdvisor. Dutch people are just happy when something works and they don't bother looking for a better way of doing things. Because of this they are slow to adopt new technologies. I am a web and software developer and was very surprised at how far behind the curve many dutch Tech companies were. It seems that the dutch are happy to emulate the media culture of America and the UK. This is inevitable when you see what is on dutch TV. 99% of it is either an English or american program or a copy of one. And don't get me into the low production values of Dutch TV. But, I am biased because I come from a media driven culture and that is not what the dutch find important. The Dutch have a word called Gezelliggheid which has no English translation and this hints at the main difference between English and Dutch culture. Gezelligheid means the appearance of comfort and fun. Not so much the feeling but the appearance to the outside world. For dutch people, having fun and being in a cozy environment is something that should leak out into the world around and be visible to the people outside. This treads upon the biggest difference between English and Dutch people. The dutch like to socialise and for others to be envious of their social engagements. English people want to be somebody and for everyone to be jealous of them.

I've been to the Netherlands and I'm surprised by the negative comments here. I find the Dutch very nice and friendly people. It's not only some shop assistants or service personnel that I judge by as an average tourist would. I have been kind of integrated into a Dutch community, communicated with dozens of people, and among them all I met no one who seemed to be unfriendly or insincere. And the family that I stayed at did their best to make my visit memorable, although they weren't at all obliged to do so. In my experience, the Dutch people are nice, perhaps like any other people, period. And there's one more thing: everyone has to look at themselves in the first place. If you aren't nice yourself, there is a great chance that people around you will think the same of you and will act correspondingly. From Russia.

I guess the Dutch still have a somewhat Calvinist streak about them; don't stand out, work diligently, live a sober - non-wasteful - life, don't be ruled/show emotions publicly. And this is combined with quite an inviting attitude for those persecuted. The Netherlands, and Amsterdam in particular, historically gave refuge to the Jews, Huguenots - who brought with them the Calvinist traditions -, and even Catholics were allowed their religious services during the Reformation, as long as they kept a low profile. This acceptance can also be shown by the large LBGT community and the many fellow countrymen of foreign descend. Yes, the Dutch may seem uninviting and cheap, but get past their stern exterior and they turn out to be quite amiable and generous. And even though the cookie jar is being shut, asking for another cookie will almost always open it up again :)

Weird, I'm Dutch, but I've lived in Britain for the past 23 years and I've found the Brits to be much more "closed" than the Dutch. It's much easier to make real friends in the Netherlands. You can know an English person for 20 years and still haven't got a clue what makes them tick.

It's awesome to see a video like this. I, being a dutch student, went studying in germany and people asked how I would define the dutch..... I simply couldn't..... Characteristically speaking we are very diverse and that is where (I think) lies our multicultural aspects..... If you want to know how dutch people are, please do not generalize all of us based on our big cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Den Haag).... I think it would be best to generalize us based on our provinces, but definitely not based on our main cities.

I think one of the most typical Dutch things is like that English teacher said. Just act normal, thats crazy enough already. We don't like people who desperatly try to be special, and we HATE extravagance. Throwing money around, spending it on fancy outfits or excessive jewellery, that is looked down upon and people really don't do that. Partly because extravagance is seen as a waste of money. Don't know how that is viewed in other countries, but from what I gather it is very different in the US for instance. The being cheap part is correct in a way, we don't live like bums to have a bit more money on our account, but things are easily seen as a waste of money. And the Polish guy was right about how proud we are... When he said "those cows come from Poland" I admit I immediatly thought "fuck you they're our cows!" lol. Thought that was an universal thing but I guess not. Perhaps because we're such a small country we try to make ourselves heard more? Idk.

My mother's family, who's name is Swarthout, are Frisian, Dutch. The descriptions of the Dutch people sound like my grandfather. Even though they came here in the 1600's, he was like this. He was blunt, hated rich people, grew his own garden, was a hell of a cook, and hated small talk, and didn't like to be told what to do. (I kind of got a lot of those traits!) And he was one of the best men I ever knew. And I miss him. Great, starting to tear up. Nice video.

I'm dutch myself, I think most people in the Netherlands are different, we got much variety between dialect and culture. In the south we celebrate carnaval, in the north they do sailing and 11-steden-tocht. We got countrysides in "de achterhoek" and we got our big cities in "de randstad". We are one big nation, with lots of potential, most people can live their own life in here, we know us, and who knows us, they would know we like to share our way of life. That's our friendship. To start a friendship, the best tip I would give. Is be honest, and straight, do not act random, some will judge you and ignore you, but there are people like me that won't give a damn on the way you look. I only care if you are allowing yourself to share your life with me. It doesn't need to be too personal, it can be about anything small.

Ik do not think every dutch person is the same, but I do think there's some truth in stereotypes. The video is called 'my amsterdammers', but they only talk about the dutch. Do remember that Amsterdam is not the same as the Netherlands and there are a lot of differences within the Netherlands. People in de randstad (the west) are normally far more direct or blunt, people in the north are much more quiet, people in the south are easy going and people in the east are more polite. Those are all stereotypes, but do not put the stereotype of Amsterdam on the whole of the Netherlands. If you are a tourist and visited Amsterdam in some way you have just visited a Lunapark for tourists, not the Netherlands.

The whole thing about the cookie is actually just to keep it fresh. For example i work in a restaurant named Van de Valk, and when you get ur main meal, there are some (but not a lot) of fries and stuff there too. people sometimes complain about that it's not enough. but here if u jsut ask for it, everything will be fixed, the main reason that we don't but like a lot of fries there is because we LIKE TO SERVE IT WARM, and we don't like wasting stuff. but is that all of the sudden called stingy? I think is called 'thinking in advance' and it actually is a smart thing to do. i mean why would you leave the cookie can open, if you ask for another one, you'll get it for sure!

We bought what ever was the cheapest and saw tulips almost everywhere. Everything had a strict schedule in my friend's houses and my own. But still, they were kind enough, friendly to strangers, but were honest, even if it hurt.

I completly understand the calling before you come over but it still seems weird to me my friends just walk into my house and go straight to the fridge and when I have parties I tell 2 people and 60 shown up. I'm also from a very small town in the middle of nowhere in the south so that might be why this all happens

I live in the Netherlands and I think it's a boring country. It's just so... Dutch? I pretty much want to get out of here as soon as I can. I don't even have any personal problems here or something, but foreign stuff is just much more interesting than homeland stuff. Lol, I would probably hang myself if I'd had to spend my whole life here. I just want change :P

moviemaker310 Your reply kinda made me laugh actually xd I understand it seems like im a real whiny fuck, but thats just because I wrote my comment in an extensive way. And I of course didn't litteraly mean hanging myself. Also, on the other hand, it happens to be the case that I plan to go to Japan indeed. Not the UK, though it could be somewhat fun? idk Anyways I know theres plenty to do in the Netherlands, I just mean I don't really like our culture. The reason for that is probably because it is my own culture. I want to experience other cultures. Especially far eastern. Is it so hard to understand? PS: yes I type a lot, I know. Sitting behind a desk and typing happens to be my thing. Also it is hard to explain my point in just a few words.

rejva yes but I completely understand that if you live in Czech Republic... xD I'm sorry if I offend you or something, but I've been to Czech Republic for 5 days (somewhere in the north) and it was just a humouristic experience. It looked all very poor and boring. Maybe it was just that place, idk. Also the environment looked like it was just a downer place 24/7. On one of the days I went just over the border, thus somewhere in the south of Poland, and I gotta say it wasn't any better xd I'm just telling you my experience, I don't want to offend your nationality or something

What the people say in the begin (sorry for my very BAD English.. i'm dutch you know) we're so different then you think. We are not so negative about everything and we tell NO ONE what to do. Yeah, we're honest, but most of the time we're lying xD And we are friendly, more then you think. So i say: Go to The Netherlands ;) And find someone you think; 'yeah he/she is friendly!' and just go talk together about things in The Netherlands. And you'll see; we are so different then you think! Bye xx Im just bored. so bye. Don't judge me.

loved the video and people sharing their experiences. In my experience Dutch people are fair in relationships with foreigners. They are civilised and respectful. Totally do not appresciate being told what to do, but they love telling to foreigners what they should do. I also find them direct for things of no essential matter, but not at all direct for things which are really important to discuss, be it at work or in personal relationships.

  • @latinvanity
    @latinvanity9 жыл бұрын

I think a lot of foreigners come here and really misunderstand the Dutch... and I think this misunderstanding has been transferred on to the Dutch to believe that they are 'weird' or something is 'wrong' or 'mean/cold'... But to be honest, the Dutch are the way they are due to history and the things they had to endured/live through. And having learned from these hardships is what has instilled these values to become a way of life. For example, Dutch people don't like to be told what to do, perhaps this is from being oppressed by religion or war and in what to think, that now (or when they became) they are free- they VALUE THEIR RIGHT to be free and should be able to express this! and being open/honest/straightforward has become a way of life. It is like one of the girls said, when you approach them and get to know them, you will see who they really are. Or not wasting their money (what others call cheap), it's not being cheap... It's handling your money well where needed. Furthermore, I always say that when you only visit Amsterdam, you can never know what the 'REAL' Netherlands is or you've never really visited this country, because Amst. is so not Dutch compared to the rest.... These big cities are so different to the rest that sometimes I wonder if that having SO many foreigners is what has made these cities 'so rude' as some would like to call it... Perhaps people are just a bit resented.

Having lived in Minnesota now for 22 years, I have finally found it in myself (as a Dutchman) to accept that the Dutch are more passive-aggressive than Minnesota. If anything else, Minnesotans will be in absolute Hog-Heaven in the Netherlands.....Except for the Dutch gun laws....and the drinking-age....and the sex age.....and the social system.....and the way the Dutch speak (honesty hit home with a crow-bar)....and this thing about not knowing about snow-mobiles (There is no snow here, so why bother. Ummm can you peddle that thing and how is that going to do me any good?). Frankly speaking and having seasoned by life and its experiences, I am looking forward to return to the Netherlands and be an even better Dutchman than I was before, but now with the knowledge of how to beat the Minnesotans at their own game.
