    Where I live, you can find garter snakes all the time. I will occasionally pick one up, and have learned how to do it without just outright terrifying them, but the only way I know I've found one that recognizes me is because the ones that don't will piss all over my hands.

    Do the mothers get distressed when removed from their eggs? Or is it more like once they are separated, she just goes about her regular snake business? Do they normally stay with the eggs in the wild? I realize I'm spamming a little here, but I hadn't thought about it before, and am curious about how mom snakes may or may not react.

  • @nerodia

    @nerodia

    Жыл бұрын

    @Scarf547 Hanging out to protect eggs is mostly a python thing. They also will shiver to (very inefficiently) keep them warm. Most other egg-layers will leave their eggs in hidden spots. In captivity, it's better for all involved to separate them so the mother doesn't waste energy protecting them and the eggs get incubated in a controlled way. The moms are only defensive till the eggs are out, then go back to their usual demeanor.

  • @grownman1017

    Pythons will incubate their eggs for the entire duration of gestation. There are species of snakes that lay their eggs, and then leave them to fend for themselves. I have breeding ball pythons for 25yrs, and currently I have close to 200 snakes in the racks. I'm literally watching one of my females lay eggs as we speak.

    They don’t get distressed if you wash the smell of the eggs off of them. They actually go back to normal life if you wash the smell off and they start eating again (they usually starve themselves during pregnancy). Hope this helps!
