How do modern submarines remain silent?

Modern nuclear submarines are a pinnacle of weapon systems engineering. And their most powerful weapon is stealth. So what makes them hard to find? What ways are there to make them very quiet? Watch and find out!

Really good overview of the history of stealth technology in submarines. What I'm curious about now, though, is how important a little less sound is. What sort of ranges would we expect a Victor sub at 400m depth to be detected vs. a Thresher sub at 400m with an approximately typical passive sonar detector? If they almost always can't detect you to begin with, a 10% power reduction might not be worth it to be more quiet and vice versa.

Sad that the modern diesels never got mentioned. Older diesels had limitations which are limited speed underwater & loud as hell when snorkeling or surfaced to recharge batteries, but modern diesels with AIP propulsion systems (e.g. the Swedish Gotland & German 212A) with Stirling & Fuel cell technology allowed higher & longer submerged running speed yet being even more quiet they nuclear counterparts.
