How do children learn words like "this" and "that"?
Ғылым және технология
This video discusses how children learn to use words such as "this", "that", "you", and "here". Linguists call these words deictic elements. The discussion is informed by Michael Tomasello's book "Constructing a Language" (2003, Harvard University Press).

This is the kind of thing that got me into linguistics. On one hand, literal babies all over the world learn languages. On the other hand after learning about linguistics, it seems impossible that a baby should be able to pick up the usage of the same syntax that a linguist could dedicate their entire career towards studying.
Thank you very much for this series!
thank you, Mr. Hilpert. so useful
Interesting, there isn't even a distance distinction in German between this or that. You'd even use the same word (das) in the context of pointing at two objects.

Even "here" and "there" are not as different. You can always ask someone "bist du da?"(are you there?), if you want to know if the person is at the same place
Imagine being a small child in a room with a man smashing an R2D2 with a cricket bat!
