How Did This Colombian Town Become Jewish?! ✡️🇨🇴

A town in Colombia where evangelical Christians converted to Judaism. Bello, Antioquia is just about half an hour from Medellín, me and my Turkish friend @Çağatay Özdemir decided to go and see what it's all about.

    Actually something very curious side note for history junkies many many Colombians have actually Jewish sefardí ancestry but in the Reconquista many converted to Christian most and all the Jewish tradition were lost so your Avarage Colombian will never now this that's why Certain Colombians have Semites or Arab features ...

    "we came here to find Jews, not sexy motorbike girls" 😂 Lol had my dying. I was born in Colombia and have some Jewish DNA. That is the best thing I heard today. I was born in Colombia and was adopted as a baby. I did a DNA test in 2021' and found out I have Ashkenazi DNA, 37% Indigenous Andean region and such, 49% Iberian Peninsula, and some Easter European, Slavic, near Turkey (Anatolia), 1% Egypt and Mahgreb. I've been practicing Judaism for a few years now and it was so great to hear there is no anti-Jew in my birth country. We are all Colombians, end of story. I loved that. I really would love to visit this Shul.

    My family is Venezuelan. Us and Colombians are the same thing. Many of us are descendants of the Sephardic Jews from Spain who were expelled from Spain in 1492. We came to South America, Central America and the islands nearby to get away from the Spanish Inquisition crusaders. However, the inquisition followed us here and we were converted to Catholicism by force. We’re b’nai Anusim. Descendants of the Anusim. Also known as conversos or Marranos. 200 million of us Hispanics are descendants of the Sephardic Jews from Spain.

    Salukie, I may be late to commenting on this (haven't looked through to see if anyone else made the same comment), but you don't need a Kohen to open up the ark (aron qodesh). Lots of batei knesset don;t have a kohen. if there is a kohen, he gets the first aliyah le torah, if there is no kohen but there is a Levi, then the Levi gets it. If there is no kohen or Levi, it doesn't matter. Also, there are certain parts of the amidah where the kohanim say "birkat kohanim" (priestly blessing), in Israel they do it every day, in hutz la'aretz, just on certain holidays.

  • @jacqueline9758

    @jacqueline9758

    I think it's not only clickbait but he purposely uses a bit of exaggeration in the title of the video to show his genuine surprise that inhabitants of a Colombian town choose to convert to Judaism. You can see when he goes through the Holy books (even though he's not religious as he mentioned in the comments) that he feels really good about meeting such familiarity in a foreign and very remote place. Historically, Jews had been converting to 'local' religions to blend in, feel like they belong, avoid prosecutions, pay less taxes or be able to do other jobs outside of what was imposed by legislative bodies (merchants, bankers). My father's family converted to Christianity for the same reasons, it enabled them to purchase lands in Poland. I found members of Jewish communities generally curious about why would anyone convert to Judaism (it's never been a religion focused on expansion and according to the Jewish philosophy, being a Jew should not be easy). Some Orthodox communities do not honour conversions and according to Halakha (religious law), you can only be Jewish if you are born to a Jewish mother. On top of that, these Colombian converts sign up to be minority in their country and it's something that Jews historically struggled with. Going around a few synagogues in the UK, I always get asked: "Why are you learning about this"? I was not raised Jewish, but I like to learn about Judaism because it's my spiritual connection, a bridge linking me with my unknown ancestors that never got to be proud of their identity. But not even Jewish myself, I do wonder why people with no historical connections choose Judaism and I ask questions just like him. And to your comment - Yes, titles can be provocative to draw attention (even though his channel is so underrated), some high-end consultancies and market research agencies use the same strategy in their publications (I work for one).
