i went here for 2 summers when i was 12-13yo, and i can tell you right now, the drama at this camp was NOT manufactured. that camp was so toxic when it came to drama. everyone was trying to date eachother and everyone trying to fight eachother. this is such a surreal video to watch

That just sounds like camp for teens. It's real clicky and I knew a few that only became counselors cause some dude or chick they liked was doing it hoping to get laid. That was just camp. I never went to any camp except a church camp my sisters friend invited us to when I was in 4th grade. I made my mom pick me up cause we weren't religious and they frickin woke us at 5:30am to pray for an hour from 6-7 BEFORE BREAKFAST! I CRIED MY EYES OUT til they called my mom. My sister stayed the 3 weeks.

In Florida there is a at risk youth military academy on a national guard base. It’s for the ages 16-17. You are able to make up high school credits or get your GED there. The crazy thing was that I turned 18 the day before I went to the academy. So they let me in. I definitely felt the age difference believe it or not. Especially when you’re living with these people. I ended up actually getting my high school diploma there. Really turned my life around. Ended up joining the marine corps afterwards.

Thank you for not shaming the victims of the “fat” epidemic, oompa. as someone who grew up in the “lower middle class,” we ate a lot of cheap, unhealthy meals. Not only that but if I didn’t finish my food my ma would show us videos on kids starving on KZread. I didn’t have a choice to eat and because of that I’ve been bigger since 3rd grade. Fun fact: when I was 13 years old and was 5’4” 150 pounds I was sent to this exact fat camp (if it’s the one I think it is in the Poconos in Pennsylvania) and I developed an eating disorder right around my 14th birthday almost exactly one year after being sent there. I lost weight at the same rate while suffering from anorexia as I did while at the camp because I also didn’t eat and exercised compulsively at camp and the following year. The difference was I stopped after leaving camp and then I didn’t stop the next year. I took diet pills and didn’t eat anything- nothing. I mean nothing. Not one bite of food- for an entire week when I was 15 and I developed acidosis. That’s when your blood becomes too acidic too support life and you slip into a coma. I got better for a few years as an adult but relapsed when my dad got sick and then died when I was 30. They tried to commit me. These camps were… not the best thing. However they were very much “of their time” - I grew up during the worst time for young women since the Victorian age when it came to forcing women to starve themselves. The same ideals drove both time periods and still exist today- the idea that fat = indulgence and women should always be sacrificing and going without. Women who indulge in anything that doesn’t benefit men or their children are seen as lazy, ungrateful, unworthy, disgusting, etc.

Diane mentioned something about her Thyroid, and that breaks my heart. It sounds like she likely had hypothyroidism, one major symptom and issue with that condition is weight gain and difficulty losing weight. Hypothyroidism is more common in women, and to my knowledge it isn't even a condition caused by obesity, it's more often caused by autoimmune dysfunctions/conditions. Not to mention the diabetes, poor Diane has an uphill battle to fight and she's just getting put on blast. Ofc you don't put in the effort, you wont get the results, but man. when your body is actively working against you, it's tough.

It's really sad that these parents are monetizing their kids and sending them off to do things like this when these kids are all still at the stage where they can fix the obesity issue at home with a healthy diet and just getting out and doing things with their children. Instead they're going to give these kids trauma around health and exercise, and that's only going to make their health worse.

We get all four seasons, we're on the coast, but we also have tons of forests, lakes, rivers, and mountains, and the wildlife is pretty tame and pretty. We're also in the middle between the northeast and the southern states, so there's a lot of different people and personalities.
