the internet isnt real. none of it is real, and i mean NONE. the internet is used to control what we think, what we see, what we buy, what we think we know, and how we feel. it enables us to be a different version of ourselves. you can be a nobody online or a personality, either way its never genuine. only time it matters is when the line between the internet crosses with real life (when people believe its real and become prejudice despite never TRULY experiencing something)

tbh when first hearing abt all of this i didn't think the joke was the biggest deal but how he handled the backlash. for a guy who claims he doesnt care about anything, he throws a fit like a toddler when receiving backlash, and as a comedian, i feel like he should expect it. he knew he had a mostly female fanbase and he has used it this WHOLE time to help further his career and then the second he recieves any backlash from his female audience, he claims he never wanted to have a female fanbase at all. which may be true, but he never complained abt it before and used it to his advantage on social media and even on stage when purposefully using the women in the audience to cater to his jokes. matt rife being a literal comedian who can't take a joke might be the most ironic thing ever.

Tbf just because you go on one podcast with female hosts doesnt inherently mean that your comedy is aimed towards women. However, what IS ironic is how he claims his comedy is aimed towards men yet he has posted multiple clips online of him doing crowd work where he's just openly and blatantly flirting with the female members of his audience, and those are some of his most popular clips with the most amount of views (they were the very first clips I ever saw of this guy even before this whole scandal happened). I dont blame women who only watch his comedy because they find him attractive, because he's openly encouraging and trying to capitalise off that, but then he backtracks by claiming his comedy is for men because he knows that other fellow comics wont take him seriously if they think his audience only watch him because they find him attractive.

This is what boggles my mind - what even is "cancelled" anyway? It's been altered in common usage to mean "some people didn't like a thing I did and expressed their opinions about it!" Honestly, Matt's "move to the right" honestly seems kind of staged - instantly being on Jordan Peterson's show for example, the switch in tone of his jokes, so manufactured and grifty. I've actually noticed this as a bit of a trend in the political sphere - the other main examples are Russell Brand and journalist (and now Elon Musk simp) Matt Taibbi. In all cases they were left of the spectrum politically or targeting a potentially lefty audience, then there are accusations of impropriety that have been floating around for a while, with potentially career-ending results, switching themselves over to a more right-wing "free speech absolutist" audience that INSTANTLY take the bait and eat it all up!

When people talk 'cancellations', it's mostly in reference to attempted cancellations, not actual ones. In any case, the intent to cancel or marginalise is still there. Just look at how popular 'deplatforming' and equating 'violent actions' with 'violent speech' is in places of supposedly higher learning. It's there, I've seen it first hand, and it's childish and pathetic. They have been backing him since a few miserable humans don't know how to ignore jokes they don't like since they are alone and need something to cry about and tried to cancel him over his speech. He’s just doing it for shock value sake and he wouldn’t be able to create a special by himself like bo burnham’s inside. What you said literally applies to that joke, the audience being disgusted at matt rife for saying something bad. You just said a whole lot of nothing, i agree it wasn't that funny but your reasoning made absolutely no sense and used comedy TV shows about fictional characters in relation to a comedy special by a comedian, none of what you brought up really comes together here, those are 2 entirely different contexts for jokes to play out, you can't just put the cast of always sunny on a stage as their characters as if it were stand up and expect the same result, the medium is very important as it informs the delivery and structure of a joke. Offensive humour works just aswell for stand up, you just have to do it a certain way, matt rife had the right structure and right premise, its just that the punchline is a little weak and could use more set up, the joke itself isn't terrible in concept or premise, it just needs better delivery really.
