This is a massive wake-up call! We really need to pay attention to where and how our data is being used. It's terrifying to think about how many companies have access to our private information.

I got a scam call not long ago, I don't remember what it was supposedly about, but they knew my mom's name. The only way that my mom's name is connected to my phone number would be the fact that my phone is on her US Cellular account. Which leads me to believe that they sell customers' information. It bothers me that we're paying about $100/month to a company that has no regard whatsoever for our privacy. Not sure about the technical legality of this but it sure doesn't feel ethical. At all.

I work in CyberSecurity and I 100% agree. The fines are pathetic and need to actually hurt the companies as much as they hurt those affected. most SME's go under within 6th months of a breach. the big companies just pay the lawyers and keep going.

I mean this not hyperbolically, why did AT&T have all of its previous users data? It should be standard for all companies to delete previous customers data.

Because all apps earn money off of the data traffic by selling the profiles, you know this, but this is actually their main stable income resource, if u want to sell mass data, u need mass, the more the better, outdated or not.. most will never delete ur data, they'll just delete the public backup's. Tik tik was musically before and just reskinned, this is the game apps play, they buy an existing one, so they start with a base of data, then able to sell the data from day one, they have an easier time in the market to compete and then take over the masses.

it might be customers that just ended they contract, I assume they don´t delet everything as soon as you leave. I think in EU companies can keep your data for like 6 months

The sharing or selling of personal data should be strictly illegal and we should not have to pay money to keep our personal information private. If you go to the doctors office or any location where they ask you for your personal information, ask them for an option out for the selling or sharing of our information first. Not every place offers them to you, so you have to request them.

It’s sad how I just don’t care anymore. I’m so used to this, so desensitized to it, and so hopeless about the data collection and selling stuff that I don’t even really care anymore

Back in the day phones were, considered a utility. The only reason this is happening is because phones are privatized. The problem with your logic is that in the video he talks about the people running the infrastructure harvesting the data and selling it, meaning the companies that run the lines providing cable and internet access, which are considered utilities. What you're saying is the equivalent of saying that "The only reason why Coca-Cola isn't healthy is because it isn't considered a necessity. If it were considered a necessity like water it would be much healthier... and you could have Coca-Cola for free whenever you want." I can see your logic, kinda, but I think you're just using some talking points you heard somewhere and you don't really understand what's going on, or your own point.

This reminds me of how people on Facebook would have all the data necessary to access their account available on their public profiles, and then never realise why their Facebook account and the accounts connected to it keep getting hacked. Like, hacking is more about social engineering than using code to break into people's accounts. If you've been personally hacked, it's probably more about you being tricked or you posting something you shouldn't have than you being specifically targeted to the extent that someone bothered to use their coding skills to hack into the website specifically to make your life miserable, and only you.

I used to be a press operator for a printing and mail company. We would buy address lists for mailers based on certain criteria. It's scary how much information is out there on a random individual. Everything from how they vote to how much money they make and how many people live in the household. A very eye opening experience.

I just assume that if there is no true punishment for illegally stealing and selling user data then the people who are in charge of the creating and executing the regulatory laws either benefit directly or financially because of it. The NSA does not need to track us if we track ourselves.

Seriously, though. Does anyone truly believe that our gov't doesn't already have every little bit of information on us already? They've been at this for DECADES! I'm over 60 & they could probably look it up & tell me what outfit I came home from the hospital in when I was born, the flavor of cake at my 2nd birthday party, or who/when I went on my first date with. When I was born back in the early 60's American's were already losing their rights & I've just watched it go downhill my whole life. I'm at a point where I just do my daily life & don't worry about those guys anymore. I have absolutely NO CONTROL over them OR their agendas & my blood pressure is already too high. 💖💖💖

Have you considered /e/ OS? It's a fully degoogled version of Android with built in tracker blocking. Still won't keep social media from knowing what your doing on their apps, but it certainly helps. Plus it's free and open source

From what congress grilled tiktok about, im perfectly fine with banning it. Kids using tiktok across the pond are getting educational material. Congress brought out stats that tik tok is targeting kids State side with SSI (suicide self injury)

Maybe instead of fining companies for commiting crimes, shut them down.

The Florida bill is a great idea. IDGAFF about the parents in this scenario; in this case far too many have demonstrated tha they’re either too busy, ignorant, too weak & incapable or just straight up disinterested & thus unwilling to properly monitor/control their kids’ internet usage & it’s at the detriment of so many young people - particularly re. their education, values & morals, sense of self, mental well-being, self-esteem & psychosocial development- and to society as a whole. There are myriad pre-existing laws, many decades old, that directly influence or supersede the responsibility & jurisdiction of parents & whilst I do believe there should be as minimal government interference in child-rearing as possible, in this case - evident as it is that unfettered internet usage by kids is damaging - an *enforceable* age restriction for internet usage will undoubtedly be more beneficial than not. (Enshrining this in law also makes it easier for parents to enforce as it would literally be them _abiding by the law_ as opposed to the parents’ dictating seemingly arbitrary ‘rules’ that will differ from family to family). I wholeheartedly support such an idea 👍
