Milspec Fuel is often a Kero-&-Diesel blend that can be used in both traditional diesel engines, & also Turbine/Jet Engines. Subject to ambient temperature different formulations exist. That is to say Jet A-1 (naphtha-kerosene) blended with what you might know as "Winter Diesel" fuel.

I think the force of a water cannon would be more than the turret was designed for, so it would probably require a different mounting system - but yes, for fighting fires a water cannon that could be directed side to side would be good, as would sprayers on the side and rear. Of course, one would need a good sized water tank and pump system.

I regret I never had the opportunity to do one of these cab overs. I have seen a couple of SS chassis being used as water tenders on local fires. Such a great vehicle.

These trucks are awesome dont get me wrong, but they half too much electrical nonsense in them. If something electrical goes, good luck as a civilian getting the right parts. The old deuce and a half is a much better bang for your buck, much easier to work on and a better truck overall.

I stumbled across your channel and took a look because of the truck. These are great trucks. The diesel looked funny because the military went to a universal fuel, JP8, in the late 80s. It works for internal combustion and turbine engines. There should be an operators manual in the cab. If not, they are available online as well as complete maintenance manuals. They will be the TM (Technical Manual) series. If you Google M1085 TM several sites should come up.

The clear fuel is a mixture of JP5 and kerosene. It has a 10 year shelf life. On average. The batteries if below 12v are usually fried. The 31 p 31 batteries will swap over. They won't last but are readily avaliable. Their should be a interlock for the cab raised. With the cab up it should not start. Also the three switches. The 3 switches in the oval on the right. Make sure the main is on.

The 5-tons we had when I was in was the generation before this particular unit they were multi-fuel platform we could run JP-8, or JP-5, diesel, along with 4 or 5 different types of fuel that we didn't use where I was. But they were set up for us to go into any country and find fuel and utilize these vehicles. Looks like you got one that came out of our CRP program with the mileage that's on that vehicle I would say it's one that got ran in the fleet then went in for maintenance and directly went to a storage facility so we would have exceptional vehicles to take into battle when that call came. All that motor needs is air and fuel and she's going to run. Diesels don't need power to continue running since they are a high-compression motor and that's what creates the combustion. The transmission might not work because of electrical failure but that motor should! I remember a 5-ton that started to runaway on one of my mechanics, I had an aluminum clipboard that I threw over the air intake tube and that darn motor sucked it into the pipe creating enough of a blockage to kill it before it let loose. We lucked out on that one. Ended up the guy's turned my clipboard into an award that no one ever wanted to get lol. This video brought back so many memories of my time in as a mechanic and then running a shop of 120 Mechanic's good times with some good guys. I've recently watched a video where someone turned one of these into a bug-out RV they are a go anywhere rig. It should be a great firetruck for many years to come. Keep up the good work!

@@LifeofLind I worked on diesel generators to provide electricity when there were power outages at phone company offices. I have a few guesses regarding why it won't shut down. As I recall there are only two easy ways to stop a diesel. 1) Remove the fuel supply. 2) Remove the air supply (block the air intake). That could be done by disabling the fuel pumps or a plate that totally blocks the air intake. I'd check with CAT or the manual.

Pretty sure the clear fuel is because the US military uses a special diesel fuel that's a bit of a splice between kerosene and winter diesel. Or something like that. Basically the government tells the EPA to piss off, hence why they can still use two stroke diesel engines in their HETs.

NO dye in the fuel. Road tax makes the companies makes them put it in so they can tell if it is road fuel or for farm or Military use and it is clear fuel

As a US Army vet, let me give you a little knowledge: The majority of US service persons are between the age of 17(In some very rare cases) to 22 years old. If the truck was allowed to start and drive with the cab tilted forward, How many of those geniuses would try to drive it like that? A lot of them would have tried. I know soldiers and I know the military, there is a lot of waiting around for stuff. I bet the first batch of trucks like that didn't have the cut off switch and some geniuses tried driving it with the cab forward and wrecked a few.

A tank of 2000gal of water will set you back over 7 tons which would exceed the payload capacity of the truck. I'm sure the truck is technically capable of taking it, but it would be over the allowable gross weight of the truck on the title.
