Diatomaceous are the source of diatomaceous earths (food grade is at health food stores). This is how to get the widest variety of probiotics for your gut. Deboki is a wonderful writer, but I must admit that Hank's narration creates a magical atmosphere that makes the experience truly unique in KZread. With all my respects to Deboki's narration, I would be very sad to lose Hank's. But if it's only occasionally, that is fine :)
Hi Deboki! Really love the stories you've written. I never thought I'd be interested on watching microorganisms, but here I am enjoying Journey to the Microcosmos thanks to you and the rest of the Journey to the Microcosmos team!
As a kid my dad used Diatomaceous Earth (DE) as the substrate of our pool filter. It's like chalk. It blew both our minds when your first video explained what they are. The thought of trillions of shells cleaning pool water is amazing.
I've loved Hank's soothing voice the whole series, but Deboki's scientific excitement comes through more and it is just lovely. The writing on this series has always been wonderful and this is an exciting new addition!

Wow. This new narrator is a welcome addition to the channel. Hank has this Zen vibe in the way he narrates, but with Deboki you can hear the subtle excitement of a writer speaking her own words. She's less a nature documentary narrator, like David Attenborough, and more of a great college lecturer, like E.O. Wilson.

I think I still slightly prefer Hanks narration, but it was still interesting to see another take on it. And it still was her amazing writing that made Hanks narration that good, so she really is amazing.
At the beginning of the episode I thought that Deboki was leaving complexly and was mentally prepping myself to be really sad. But learning that they're now going to be an occassional host quickly changed that sadness into joy. I love this channel and everything it represents and I'm glad to have a new voice telling some of its tales.
Diatoms: The most chill and relaxing short documentary to fall asleep to. I mean this as a complement.
Its been that long? It feels like the announcement of the launch like it was last year... Welcome to Deboki -- though I may add, her narration is slightly less dreamy and a bit faster than Hank's. Regardless of the differences, also a welcome guide on this journey :)
Congratulations Deboki for getting out from behind the camera to in front (in a manner of speaking). Your words (in Hank's voice) and your research on the microcosmos have always been a brilliant addition to Jame's brilliant filming and Hank's asmr tones. Looking forward to hearing your take on this ... oh, it's now. [Deboki speaks] wow!! Nicely done. So nicely done. Thanks Hank for getting her on board.
Wow.... Has it already been 70 episodes? It feels like only a few weeks ago that the channel launched! I would love to hear more about these jewels of the ocean. What a fascinating way to live live! I would love to see more about how they build these glass houses on a more granular level. Pun intended... =] Thank you all, love this show... Glad to have Deboki sharing the
Thank you for always showing the name of the species that you show in your videos. I'm a secondary teacher of biology and some time ago I took a sample from a lake to show it to my students. Sure it was filled to the brim with copepods and some diatoms, but it was my first time coming across with bacillaria paxillifer. I tried my earnest to identify it under a school 30 euro microscope to no avail. I was able to see that it had the usual diatom wall, but it's odd movement caught me completely by surprise. I have to say that I have managed to get some students in secondary school to be attracted by microscopy, to be point where one brought a sample from a pond filled with ostracods! Thank you
Deboki, it's really exciting to hear your voice and learn your name after hearing your words for so long!
Welcome Deboki, im happy to hear your voice!!
Good job Deboki! Our universe is so complex. Even the simplest functions of the smallest life mystifies me. This will always be a source of infinite wonder. No matter the narrator.
One of the best things about this channel is the soothing, relaxing narration. While I'm sure she is a great host on a purely learning channel, her voiceover is currently too rigid and instructional. I recommend something more along the lines of the sultry voice stylings of a jazz singer (ex.: Jessica Rabbit, Hannah Gill with PMJ), or the stereotypical stoner lilt (ex. Tommy Chong, Janice from the Muppet Show)
Awesome narration, Deboki! Thank you for all the hard work you've put into this show over the years!
Fascinating and wondrous, as per usual. So lovely to hear Deboki's excitement about these amazing little geo-germs.
yaaaay new narrator!!! so excited. i love diatoms so much, it's hard not to photograph only them while exploring the microcosmos
Her voice is nice and shes clearly used to video presentation but she doesn’t quite capture the same image that Hank did. Hank makes it feel like we’re these gentle giants peering into a world that we shouldn’t be allowed to see. It’s almost like if hank is too loud he’ll startle the microbes and they’ll hide. I’m hopeful that either by herself or with hanks help she’ll develop a similar style too.

The issie I'm personally running into is that voices with a lot of treble demand my attention in such a way that, while useful if I need to be alert, is providing the opposite effort I come to this channel for. Perhaps it's not an issue for most others, but I'm curious if anyone else finds that a voice with more bass and a slower annunciation helps sooth them. I was actually surprised to find that Hank was the narrator when I came across this channel, having started on the 5th or so video; the energy that I associated with Hank's work in the paat, with SciShow, Crash Course, and the like, was more frenzied and energetic, so I have no doubt that this wonderful madam can sync with the existing mood of narration with more practice. I just hope that they examine what attributes the existing audio had and try to capture the same qualities. Regrettably, I'm not able to be lulled to sleep with this audio track, and the peaks in treble are tickling my ears in an uncomfortable way. I hope it's enjoyable for someone else, though! Just not my cup of tea, sorry.
@mako3951

She is just talking and she sounds normal omg. it shouldn't matter anyways. what matters is the information being presented, we don't need to "experience" these microbes they are literally microbes they are thoughtless biological machines, the fascinating thing about them is the information about them not the voice people put on when they talk about them. These videos aren't meant to be an asmr video for you to be lulled by, they are meant to teach you interesting information. Jeez people are so fucking annoying, they'll find anything to complain about. People just hate when women do anything I guess.

@@mako3951 this channel has became much more than just an informational channel. This place is capturing the attention by those who were never tempted by the micro universe (biology). Hi, Deboki! Thanks for your contributions so far to this lovely show! You have a very nice voice and your writing style has been amazing. Glad to hear from you!
Deboki is such an expert, and the writing on this show is truly top notch. But! This episode felt more like a science lecture and less like the soothing meditation that I come to Microcosmos for. I am professor of mathematical physics. My life is being excited about science. I’m not looking for more exciting lectures. I come here when I run out of Bob Ross episodes. (Granted, Hank plays so different a character here than his high-energy Sci Show persona that I didn’t recognize him until many episodes in. This is surely due to Deboki’s excellence.)
Welp, Hank, you're not going to have to worry that this channel is simply riding on your famous coattails, given the number of comments exclaiming surprise that they've only just discovered that it's you doing the narrating !

I was worried about the change in narrator when Hank announced it. Glad it was a baseless worry; the new narrator's voice is pleasant and clearly conveys her love of the subject!
Really beautiful episode!! I especially loved the part about how the diatoms eventually sink, it was so poetically written
Well, hmmm - the new narrator is real good, think right now still voting for Hank. I think I really like the quiet way he speaks, sorta like we are looking over the microbes shoulder and trying not to disturb it. Am looking forward do the crash course organic chemistry however, think this narrator is probably just really good at that.

Wonderful & informative, but one of the few times I've really wanted James to have access to electron microscopy. So much of the details of Diatom's constructions are just too small for optics.
