The bacillaria look EXACTLY like “Nanjing Lily” performing sticks. These sticks are tied together in such a way that they can unfold into long, flexible lines and retract back into one small package of lined-up sticks.

Proud to say my 11 year old daughter (who adores this channel,BTW) just said - completely ignoring the phone ad we saw earlier - "I GOTTA get a microscope!". And we'll be spending the next few hours shopping for one online. ( she didn't know that until I typed it, and now she's squealing and hopping around!)

This is one of the funniest and most accurate things I've read on the internet. XD thanks for that hearty chuckle!
This. This is real scientists. I remember watching as deep sea marine biologists first discovered the dumbo octopus on NOAA and were squealing 'oh my God what is that it's so cute!!!' People forget at the end of the day scientists are human people that are just really interested in a certain science thing, and anyone who's really interested in anything gets a little weird about it. Keep doing the Bacillaria microbiologists 👌❤

@@solchapeau6343 I think there's been a misunderstanding of my comment. By "this is real scientists," I was referring to those microbiologists of whom Hank referred to as drunkenly trying to link themselves together and chant "do the Bacillaria". I was referring to the fact that real scientists are also real people, and like real people, the reasons they spend their lives investigating a potentially infinitely narrow scope of the universe is because of unbound interest and insatiable curiosity for that topic. But one nit-pick for you. While this channel may be targeted not at other microbiologists, but "science interested" people, James and Hank are, in fact, both scientists. Hank's degrees are in chemistry, not microbiology, but to say he's not a scientist is incorrect. Likewise, for the other science channels in his media empire, experts are consulted, sourced, and/or flat out the main host of the show. Not everyone can go get a degree in science. Many people have hobby level interests in science, however, and channels like these in Hank's media empire give people like that a chance to keep in the know about their fields of interest or discover new ones, between the workings of their daily lives making sure the rest of the world continues to function around scientists.

I love how this channel is less of a history channel documentary and more of a fun teacher telling you about his stories in college or something like that
I love these to an such an immense degree. The soundtrack, narration, and the film from the microscope combine to make the perfect viewing experience. I can’t explain the level at which I can be both mentally and visually stimulated, while also being so very calm and relaxed. I feel like this comment is a little bit rambling, but I wanted to type out my appreciation. Thank you.

Guess who just found their first Bacillaria colony! \( ^-^ )/ They really are as beautiful as they look in this video!
This organism made my jaw hit the floor. Absolutely incredible.
I think this movement can be explained as a swarm behaviour. Each cell can only sense what the adjacent cell is doing, but if one of them starts shifting, it propagates a signal with all others shifting too. This movement could be a way for the colony to reach out for surfaces to to attach to, enabling them to move by swinging from rock to rock or whatever they can grip.

Can the two ends somehow connect with each other? Is there a way for them to 'know' that the other is already connected? Is the raphe small enough so only one can attach? If thats the case then can multiple bacillaria connect to a single one and you could have them branching off? So many questions! Bacillaria are so cool!

I think we still don’t even know how diatoms move. Maybe the movement detection involves voltage differences, electrostatics? If these are photosynthesis creatures, the only reason these guys want to move is to push predators FAR away, and for show (freaking out the microcosmos)
Please tell me there is going to be a Bacillaria pin. I need this in my microcosmic life.

Props to whoever produced the narration because hank's voice is *chef's kiss* This series feels so captivating and awe-inspiring, like documentaries I fondly remember from my childhood. The music, the footage, the script… everything comes together and feels really cohesive and well-coordinated, like so many dancing diatoms.

I absolutely love these videos, though the ASMR quality of the narration makes me quite sleepy. I can't seem to escape a mid-video nap.
5:23 if you stop to think a little bit, being such a "big" being with various clonal cells, it is somehow just like us. I mean, just before we born we are like 1 cell, and then, mitosis after mitosis, clones are made and we are formed. interesting to think about it this way... (sorry for my "brenglish")

• You had me at 0:55. • How the heck do the segments slide yet stick together to avoid slipping off the end while telescoping? 🤨 The adhesive doesn't explain that. 😕 I can't help but wonder if this could be used to solve Oskar van Deventer's Segerdas conundrum. 🤔 • 6:45 - Maybe they use a biomechanical version of Oskar's solution to the Segerdas. 🤔
@TheLocust911
2 жыл бұрын
He mentioned that the adhesive comes from a slit. maybe that slit is also accompanied by a "rail" in the membrane. After that it would just have to contract fibers like normal muscles.
Theory : The structure is "controled" by the two outermost pieces. When it reaches for light/food/etc it tugs on the next one which tugs on the 3rd and so on. If a piece senses relaxation it in turn relaxes. No communication, just an If/then instinct.

Just a thought, if you're proposing an idea for possible study in science, it's an hypothesis, not a theory. Using theory in th colloquial sense while talking about science just makes it easier for science deniers to try to ignore all the evidence behind actual scientific theories. There's a good chance thats how it works though, since it looks like they move too quick for chemical signaling, although how the physical movement itself .triggers the next one could be interesting to find out. Is it something ON the cell wall sliding past that does it, or some type of bio-electrical thing where it subtly jolts the next one and kind of says "come on". Quite a few possibilities i would think.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the mysterious microcosms that surround us.
Thank you for teaching me about the microcosmos Hank. I never knew it was so beautiful
Absolutely fantastic video, as always. I'm a bit biased though, while I always loved just about anything 'science related,' I went on to major in biology, focusing on microbiology specifically. So I love everything here (and on related channels tbh) to start, but this was a real gem. Great work, keep it up! 👍👏🏼
These videos make me better human everytime I see them. So much knowledge about life and microcosm in so subtle and brief video.
Looks like a bunch of little diatoms sliding past each other lol That's really mesmerizing.
This is by far the craziest lookin animal I've seen on this channel. Great work. How much are they like muscle cells?
The way that is not flat but has that bit of curl to it I like that
It almost looks like it's stretching out to collect food, then contracting to "grind" it up...and then out again to collect (and grind , I suppose) and then back to grind....maybe ingesting small particulate stuff the entire time. Just a thought.
Magnificient pictures, and thank you for teaching me new things!
All it takes is for the music to begin, aaaand I'm there... My heart rate slows. Step by step, I grow more relaxed. By the time Hank's mellifluous voice begins, I'm in the optimum mental space to be fascinated. ~ ~ ~ I look forward to more episodes about Diatoms... Especially, the exquisite, symmetrical & highly efficient structures (+), that they build from dissolved silica & sea minerals, which serve as skeletons. (+) Which are currently being reexamined as exemplars to emulate with advanced materials in both nanoscale & macroscale engineering.
So lovely, and what a community!
There’s a lot of macroscopic clips now. It looks great!

good stuff.
*hank, john, an oxford comma, & team discuss show ideas* ... *Hank points outward* Team: no edge, gotcha. *Hank points inward* Some say Hanks voice turned to velvet in that instant. After a series of smooth medical operations the velvet was removed but, remains part of his sagonesque swag... Thank you for making this a available for free.
