How diamond colour affects the fire and sparkle of a diamond

In this video we look at the different optical performance between a D colour and H colour diamond. Both diamonds are ideal cut with Hearts and Arrows and so the main difference between these two diamonds is their colour grade.

    Hello... I got a question I had a diamond stud earring when I looked at it threw loop it had a really good cut to it and didn't have many black spots and stuff inside when I would take it in sun it would sparkle ALOT it was maybe quarter carat in 14k yellow gold pawn shop only gave mre 40$ I think I got ripped off what u think it was worth? Just cause it had good cut and sparkled a lot does that mean its worth money?

    How do you know if it's really a diamond? Mine has no rainbow sparkles like these. I'm a little scared that I've been sold a chunk of glass.

    Great question - the best way to check if the diamond is real is to take it to your local jewellers and ask them to use a diamond tester to check it. A good quality jeweller should have this piece of equipment. If the diamond doesn't show much refraction or fire, it is most likely that the diamond's angles and facets haven't been cut correctly, or the diamond has a level of milkyness. I would suggest cleaning the stone thoroughly and compare it to other stones of the same shape in a jewellers shop. This will give you a good reference point. If you wanted to go further and the diamond is larger, it may be worth getting the stone re-cut. We would certainly be happy to advise you on this - if you would like to discuss in more detail my email address is ed@samarajames.com.

    Hi, which proportions has the stone on the left (table, ankles, ...)? And what are the perfect diamond proportions to get a very nice sparkling diamond with rainbow colours?

  • @SamaraJamesJewellers

    @SamaraJamesJewellers

    Hi, very interesting question. Firstly there isn't single set of angles and proportions which give the finest result. The second difficulty is that there isn't enough information on the GIA report to properly define the angles as the GIA only measure around 30% of the facet angles. This is because they take an average of the 8 main pavilion facets and 8 kite facets on a round brilliant diamond which accounts for 16 of the 56 facets (plus the table facet). The optics of a diamond depend heavily on the interaction of these facets with the lower girdle facets and the star and upper girdle facets. Hence why the information on a GIA report isn't sufficient. We use of own HD Sarin scanner to analyse all of the diamond facets as part of our 20 point assessment, as well of course as a visual inspection. We would be happy to explain more about our criteria on the phone if that would be of interest?

    1:17: The worse-colored diamond on the right has an angle where it is almost completely white from the light reflection on the table (largest surface). How come this is not present on the left diamond at any angle? What does it mean?

  • @SamaraJamesJewellers

    @SamaraJamesJewellers

    5 ай бұрын

    This is regrettably an effect of the subtle difference in angle of the two stones in the holder that we made to film this shot. Their pavilions sit in very small cut-outs & the stones were fractionally different, so you can see the table reflection of one stone and not the other. If you look closely you can see the left hand stone table start to reflect too.

    There are a few ways but most involve some special equipment. Firstly, if you measure the dimensions of the stone you can estimate how much it should weight if it is diamond, and then check its actual weight, you can check the stone's density. This is a very good way to identify fake diamonds as most stones which look similar to diamond have a very different density. If you take the stone to a local jewellers they should also have a diamond tester which tests the resistance of the stone which is also a reliable method. Our company (Samara James) are in the UK, but if you were able bring the stone into us we can certainly check these things for you free of charge.

    I own both gold and diamonds. The difference between them? The gold sits in a hidden place, the diamond is on my finger every day where I get to enjoy it. I am acutally thinking of selling my gold so I can buy more diamonds to put on my fingers and enjoy them!

    He is talking about a particular round cut called a "Hearts and Arrows," so named because when looking down into the stone from the table (the flat side) you see dark arrow shapes, and when looking at the stone from the pavilion side (the pointy side) you see facets shaped like hearts.

    It was to show that there was a discernible colour difference between the two diamonds when viewed from the side (which is how colour is graded). However, when viewed from above in the same light you can see it is much more difficult to discern the difference. Also I was trying to show that the level of fire, scintillation and brilliance shown by a diamond, even between two diamonds with a very different colour rating, is not an important factor.

Most educated people listen to the plebs saying haitch and just think the person is a simpleton. Often, they're right. However I chose to point out a mistake that could help this guy stop making a fool of himself and from the sounds of things, perhaps you too. You're welcome.
