How Democrats Can Take Back the House in 2024 (Live from Louisville)

Congressman Morgan McGarvey, State Senator Karen Berg, and special guest Perry Bacon Jr. join Jon, Jon, Tommy, and Dan live from Louisville! New Speaker of the House (and possible but unproven short king) Mike Johnson's MAGA bona fides are tested in an interview with Sean Hannity. Kentucky prepares for the November 7th gubernatorial race between Democrat incumbent Andy Beshear and Mitch McConnell mentee, Daniel Cameron. And, Joe Biden gets a primary challenger: Congressman Dean Phillips of Minnesota. Plus, Rep. McGarvey serves up tough questions and samples of the state's bourbon offerings in a segment called "I'll Drink the Fifth."

At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. As the mom of a transgender son, I related to Karen's story so very much and my son had a much the same experience, so I chose to let him home school which I believe saved his life. This was 15 years ago and I am happy to say he is doing very well and has created a community of wonderful, supportive friends and family. Although he is very worried about this GOP and their stand against transgender people. It breaks my heart to hear her story and I empathize with her. Vote blue!

It's hard, seeing our kids deal with hateful evil people. I'm glad your kid is doing so well and hope they continue to thrive. If we fail at the ballot box, lots of people will be harmed worse than they're already dealing with. People are tough and capable of seeing each other as worthy of compassion and respect. Ultimately, I expect the country will continue to reject the far right extremists' vision of our future.

OMG! The comparison to left handed children is magnificent. I was born to be left handed. My mom tied my hand behind my back and I now use my right hand for those things I was taught (eating, writing). I still iron, sweep, open cans, etc. with my left hand. It's messed me up, as I can't play tennis because I use my right hand, but wrong foot (same for bowling), and those children have a much greater deeper impact than a simple handedness. Thank you.

Even the bible, specifically Jesus himself, believes in the separation of church and state. When asked what is more important - Tithing or taxes, he says "Pay unto God what is God's and pay unto Caesar what is Caesar's." Just that quick and witty answer from the intro- "That's above my pay grade"- speaks to the fact that Biden's mind is still very sharp. His body may look frail, but his intellect does appear to be fully intact. ~ It's so odd to me that anyone would expect the Constitution to address things like homosexuality and abortion. My impression is that such men (the framers of our constitution) would probably see these things as private matters, inappropriate to include- and it wouldn't have occurred to them to politicize intimate matters. Establishing a democratic government has nothing whatsoever to do with regulating peoples' private lives, and our Founding Fathers certainly would have recognized that. I wish our leaders were only so interested in regulating our business and financial sectors as they are with how Americans conduct our lives.

I don't think he's trying to sell the lie "we're the party of equal protection and accountability under universally applied laws that govern everyone, including our human leaders." What he's trying to convey is "we are the party of rigidly enforced hierarchy and order." If you mouth off to a cop during a traffic stop and that cop murders you and gets away with it, I think he likely sees that as an example of "rule of law" rather than one of the biggest betrayals of it possible.

So while there was plenty about him to be repulsed by, for some reason they chose to denigrate him for his height, which at 5'7 might be 2 inches below the average today, but it was 2 inches ABOVE the average in his time. Senator berg, thank you you for your beautiful, moving articulation of your son’s story and the impact it has on your work in the legislature. I sent your portion of the video to my mom, who is a loyal democrat but struggles to “make sense” of the current discourse around trans children and trans athletes specifically. I hope that little by little, stories like your son’s will help her see the inhumanity in the right’s crusade against trans people who, like us all, simply endeavor to be loved and accepted for their true selves.

32% turnout in Kentucky is amazingly low. It's 50% higher in Minnesota, where a) it's been a swing state for a long time, and b) where the Dept of state sees good turnout as the goal, not a threat

Here's something to ponder. The incredibly clever, very persuasive & extremely intelligent Representative from FL, Jared Moskowitz who happens to be Jewish, said something wonderful in a recent interview w/Bryan Tyler Cohen. He commented on Mike Johnson's statement that in affect said he would govern by using the words in the Bible. As Moskowitz pointed out, for his people the Bible is ONLY the Old Testament & that should give everyone pause. Indeed. 💙

The problem with people's desire for retirement with dignity is, the majority of Americans don't retire with several hundred thousand dollars in a savings account, a great IRA or stock portfolio. So in the 250 something years or so of the American experiment, most Americans don't have a distinguished retirement. But I'm sure all congressman do, so that will always be on their promises list for the rest of us. But more of us than not, live out retirement, just scaping by.

I wish Mike Johnson would actually read the words of Jesus, who they claim to follow and worship. What about Judge not lest ye be judged? Give to the poor, take care of the widows and orphans? Give to those who ask of you? When I was hungry you fed me, when I was naked you gave me your coat? Welcome the stranger? It seems the conservatives conveniently ignore the real words of Jesus, the “founder” of the Christian church.

One complaint, filed in 2019, alleges that Johnson made sexually suggestive comments to a female lobbyist. The lobbyist said that Johnson told her that she was "dressed to impress" and that he "liked her skirt." He also allegedly asked her if she was "attached" and if she would be interested in going out with him sometime. Another complaint, filed in 2020, alleges that Johnson made sexually suggestive gestures to a female employee. The employee said that Johnson would often stare at her breasts and buttocks, and that he would make comments about her appearance. She also said that he would sometimes brush up against her in the office. A third complaint, filed in 2022, alleges that Johnson created a hostile work environment for women by making sexist and misogynistic remarks. The employee who filed the complaint said that Johnson would often make jokes about women's bodies and that he would make comments about how women were inferior to men. She also said that he would sometimes talk about how he would like to have sex with his female employees. Johnson has denied all of the allegations against him. He has said that he is a victim of a "smear campaign" and that the allegations are politically motivated. The House Ethics Committee is currently investigating the allegations against Johnson. The committee has not yet released a report on its findings. In addition to the complaints of inappropriateness, Johnson has also been accused of sexual harassment by two women. One of the women, a former campaign staffer, said that Johnson groped her and made sexual advances towards her. The other woman, a former employee of Johnson's congressional office, said that Johnson kissed her without her consent. Johnson has denied the allegations of sexual harassment. He has said that the allegations are "false" and that he is the victim of a "witch hunt." The allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriateness against Johnson are serious. If the allegations are proven to be true, Johnson could face disciplinary action from the House Ethics Committee, including expulsion from Congress. tuneshare more_vert
