Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

I think Trump knows full well that he cannot win in any serious debate. He has made no efforts whatsoever to be able to give solid answers on matters concerning policy, just as in 2016. So instead he has decided to take a sledgehammer to the entire debate format.

@@robinmattheussen2395 exactly. There's no way to respond to his nonsense without sounding foolish. Donald uses lies to mentally and emotionally exhaust his opponents. People become defensive, flustered, and typically give up (and give in). I wouldn't even acknowledge his outlandish comments and show him that none of that drivel matters. I don't think another debate will take place. However, if it does Biden shouldn't react AT ALL when Donald goes off topic, lies, or attacks him.

To me, one of the most disgusting things I've heard coming from a president was at last night's debate when Trump mocked Biden's son for struggling with drug addiction. Like does he realise that our country is in the middle of an opioid and addiction epidemic? Drug abuse is one of the biggest health and mental health problems our country is facing today, and he thinks it's okay to mock those who are struggling?!?!? Millions all around the country are struggling or know someone/lost someone to addiction, so for a sitting president to mock someone with a mental illness just disgusts me. (Not to mention that the opioid epidemic was engineered by the pharmaceutical industry and that Republican party profits off it, so maybe that's why he doesnt give a shit but idk it's just all so gross to me)

Trump ran this thing like a wrestling match devoid of rules, and his base ate it up. And you guys are 100% correct that any addition of rules will be ignored. As someone who is the survivor of domestic violence, Trump represents, to me, what almost every abuser looks like: entitled, dismissive of authority, willing to gaslight, and determined to bully their way to a perceived victory no matter the means taken. Many, many men and women live with this kind of person day-to-day, and it's a living hell. We're now experiencing as a country what it is to have an abuser in the Oval Office, and our collective sadness, rage, and desire to leave are palpable.

Dear God. I don't know how Joe Biden got through 90 minutes of that lunacy. Especially when Trump brought his children into it. I can't watch Trump speak for more than like 30 seconds without wanting to throw my remote at the tv. I'll watch Kamala take on Pence for sheer entertainment value but I won't watch a single Biden/Trump debate. I get nothing out of these things, my vote is never going to change, I've already voted, my entire family has already voted and as a result politics is now a topic we don't discuss in this house. Whatever calming effect Joe talking about policy or even just being a normal person is massively, massively outweighed by Trump just bring extremely rage inducing.

I get that totally. For months I can't stand to listen to Trump but out of civic duty I tried to watch the debate to about the three minute mark and it was already clear that Trump wasn't going to allow a civil debate to happen. So I watched wooden boats building instead and watched a few clips later just to see if it got better but obviously it didn't.

This is also strange to me. I understand how difficult it was, and I understand that there was a long tradition of moderators taking a back seat that Wallace was afraid to break. But after the debate he stated that he did not expect Trump was going to use this strategy and that he only realized this too late. Wait, what? Again, I have sympathy for him, but how could you NOT be prepared for this scenario? What happened was what pretty much everyone was expecting.

@emily Reid Agree totally. I think that all Americans need to realize that, as citizens, they are responsible for holding their government to account, and that they have been doing a terrible job of this lately. (Looking away doesn't generally improve problems... usually they fester and get much worse. DJT is a symptom of this.) Seems like we as citizens of other countries are also guilty of this also. However, major change that truly benefits large numbers of people only comes about from mass movements, but these movements don't necessarily end well. Perhaps time for a basic discussion of who Americans are and what they believe in is in order. What kind of operating principles the citizens of the US can initially agree on... for eg. 1. all citizens should have the right to vote, and be guaranteed free, safe and unimpeded access to vote; 2. US citizens should take an oath swearing that they: believe in democracy, and support its evolutionary development to represent and include all people who are citizens without prejudice for race, gender, economic or disability; 3. citizens need to discuss and decide what your monetary, economic, social, health, education priorities and principles should be ... Seems to me you need to get some agreement on some basic principles in order to move forward without the danger of civil war erupting. There will likely be a major disruption to the world as we know it brought on by a variety of forces. This is a precarious time for the world, IMO. We need to appeal to people's good instincts to get through these challenges successfully. Sending good and hopeful wishes.

I can't take another one of these debates. They need to cut mics on the next one.

Unifying America into not wanting to watch the other two. I didn't watch it at all. I knew how it was going to be. I decided to wait for your programme. Thank you.

What can be done? Put both candidates behind bulletproof glass booths on stage and have the moderator controlling mutes on both mics. When it's candidate A's turn to speak for 2 minutes, candidate A's mic is opened for 2 minutes while candidate B's mic gets muted. Then when it's candidate B's turn to speak for 2 minutes, candidate A's mic gets muted while candidate A's mic is opened for 2 minutes. When that segment of the Q&A concludes and open debate ensues then the moderator opens both mics until open debate concludes. At which time the moderator mutes both mics to ask the next question. Rinse & Repeat.

Oh I want to watch the vice presidential debate. Kamala Harris is going to eat Pence with fava beans and a nice Chianti.

During every minute of the debate, I was so relieved to know this analysis would be waiting for me tomorrow. Thanks, guys. ✌
