On top of all that, the review embargo controversy and bugs somewhat masked the fact that the game lacks basic features that have been present in open world games for the better part of a decade

Exactly. The most noticeable one was how there was no Augmented Reality waypoint guide, so 85% of my game time was spent staring at top right corner minimap and constantly crashing into traffic. Just a miserable time
