How Cognitive Distortions Keep you STUCK - 4 Way to Stop Negative Thinking | Shadé Zahrai

Psychology researchers have known for a while about something called cognitive distortions. These are negative or irrational patterns thought patterns that can play a role in diminishing your motivation, destroying your self-esteem and contributing to mental health problems like anxiety and depression.
Any of these negative thought patterns are dangerous because they lead you to believe something that isn’t true. They lead you to inaccurately perceive reality, and it can be very damaging.
The term cognitive distortions was coined in 1963 by psychologist and researcher Aaron Beck (1963) to describe “idiosyncratic thought content indicative of distorted or unrealistic conceptualizations’”. (Reference)
In this episode I share some of the most common cognitive distortions I’ve come across in our work with professionals all around the world, and 4 powerful practices you can apply to avoid getting sucked in.

Hi Shade, great video! You touched on an important topic about overthinking, but I believe there's another critical aspect to consider. Our thought processes are strongly linked to our physical health. In fact, health issues like stomach problems or hormone imbalances can trigger anxiety and affect the way we perceive the world around us. Sometimes, our unconscious mind activates a "safety system" that leads us to focus only on negative aspects. For example, it does make sense to think only negative aspect if you left your 4 years old child at home alone. Unfortunately, our conscious mind often struggles to stop negative thoughts that arise from the unconscious mind. Overall, I appreciate your video and wanted to add some additional thoughts to the conversation. Keep up the great work!

Cognitive distortions: 1. Overgeneralisation - using negative experience of a particular event with some other events 2.Mental filter - filtering out only the negative experiences from an event 3. Catastrophising - blowing things out of proportion 4. Personalisation - Always making you a victim 5. Labelling - attaching negative labels to yourself Corrections : 1. Observe - Thinking about our thinking 2. Replace absolutes - everytime to sometime 3. Labels to facts 4. Keep record on automatic negative thought Hope it helps 😊

This is impressive!! I knew there was something wrong with me, I suffer from social anxiety, I´ve been coming to Toastmasters for 6 weeks, and now people tell me that they don't see me as a nervous guy as I always describe myself, in fact they say that I speak really well in front of people , yesterday I felt I did it terrible, but they congratulated me, and said that I did it really well, much better than the last time, but I felt completely the opposite, it seems that my head is playing this cognitive distortions with me, thank u for let us know about this, I'm gonna start practicing this!

I have been undergoing all these cognitive distortions for years. They have resulted in exactly the same outcomes as said in the video. I have been meditating a lot to trace the roots of the problems. As a result, I have already been following some of the remedial practices highlighted in the video. The entire episode is amazing and so insightful. But for me, the best part is the fist half. Thank you for sharing it. Keep uploading such videos.🙏

You're giving great advice about positive affirmations. I also want to add that there will be those people I will put you down because of a negative situation. They try to engrave in your mind that you're not worthy a positive things even when it's not your fault the negative outcome occurred. So there will be doomsayers and overly critical people. The trick is to counter their negative message they try to force upon you

Great advice. I have been guilty of catastrophic thinking myself at times. It's amazing how the mind dwells on the negative if thinking about the negativity overpowers positive thoughts. In order to conquer that I always go to my Christian faith and remind myself that I belong to God and I'm royalty, and I can conquer this situation with His power

Im stuck in cognitive distortions about my lack of value as I was scapegoated by my school for organizational issues and kicked out. I ended up not getting my degree and struggling to get the quality of work and relationships I want as a result. I hate myself and find it hard not to hate everyone involved. I just have to remind myself that it's not their fault for being ignorant. I'm struggling to remember who I used to be before I trusted them.
