Is India GDP really USD3, 75 trillions. When China GDP was that level, it was in 2007, a year before Beijing Olympics games. At that time all the first tiers cities infrastructure were already awesome. China at that time already sent men in space several times. High speed rail was already a reality. Even back in 1993 when China economy was 0, 5 trillion, China was bidding for Olympic 2000 hosting and was confident they can organize something great. Sorry Palki. Even if you say India is close to USD4, 0 trillion gdp, India has NONE of the above attributes. May be India is cooking her books. Modi is giving fake figures to impress his electorate

Story of Hong Kong is very similar to that of India, just later timing. Both the British did not give autonomy until they left, and leaving in political disorder and distracted on many topics, not focusing on welfare, prosperity of the all population & economic progress for all, everyone in the society. Instead distracted by separatist, human rights, democracy etc. While down, others in Asia progress along very nicely. But now both HK & India seems to be on right track to first focus on stability & economic growth, and therefore see very bright future for both ex-colonies. Hopefully can reach status of Singapore today.

The so-called freedom that they 'enjoyed' was simply bread crumbs that were fed to them. Throughout the 100 years of British rule, the governor had always been appointed by the Brits. There is no city to replace Hong Kong because there is no free city in China. Hong Kong was a go between for the West and Mainland China. It offered the protections and freedom of a capitalist system while being apart of communist China. A huge blunder on the part of the CCP. The crackdown also ruined their chance of peaceful reunification with Taiwan.

It must be incredibly sad for those human beings having extreme surveillance shoved upon them. The British have mucked up many countries, in the past. In Hong Kong, not so. Anyone, I ever met, that lived those vibrant times, miss them greatly. I've only been there a couple of times. The people were delightful. I had a uni professor, female, who lived there during the Chris Patton days, as a child. Her Dad was a diplomat.

The people who lived there and shared each other's dreams. After World War II, under a British Governor, Hong Kong grew to the great Common Market it was in the 70s and 80s (there's money to be made for capitalists and good immigration prospects for Hong Kong residents). I believe that the Hong Kong Dollar 💵 was the true measure of successful capitalism (good exchange value). It had what other ASEAN nations needed.... Good Financial Managers and Good Corpations to do business with... Outside the Chinese turn over, Hong Kong Capitalism should evolve further (not to die out) by making or founding a colony (outside Chinese territories) ... A "new Hong Kong". Relocating the entire structure of Capitalist Hong Kong... it's banking and finance, it's free society, it's religious business practices, it's people Chinese or not, etc. would be easy and possible... It is after all a "micro nation" and with the help of freedom loving people all over (plus corporations) Hong Kong can still exist outside the land space that the British leased from the Chinese Empire a long time ago... Sumatra, Malaysia or even in Papua New Guinea are good places to do this.... (500 year leases hopefully)..❤

Clearly you’ve no idea…. Hong Kong’s success has nothing to do with the British. When the British governed Hong Kong, the Chinese were treated like second class, corruption was high, they ran Hong Jong like a gangster. This improved over decades but that is the same all over the world, the British were forced to change their ways. There were no jobs for the people, some left to work on the railways in the US as cheap labour and do some research on how they were treated. While later others left to go other parts of the world working in restaurants and takeaways, it was never an easy ride, racial abuse was rife back in the days. You think Hong Kong was democratic? In all the years when the. British governed Hong Kong, not a single Hong Kong citizen has a right to vote who can govern Hong Kong. This was hand picked in England, it had always been an English Governor during the British control, the Chinese never had a choice…. When Hong Kong was handed back it was the first time they had a choice and was able to vote… The British wanted to keep Hong Kong and had always wanted to break the 99 lease but they had no choice because they cannot afford to have a war against China. In comparison to the Falklands when Argentina attempted to take it back, they didn’t even hesitated, because they knew Argentina is too weak.

Palki is an eloquent speaker on topics which reflect HK as a colony of Britain and ignores the causes for the outcomes arising from its youth for acts best describes as treason for the well being of HK. Destruction of national property and businesses, intimidation of fellow citizens and causing free movement especially of international travel, certainly contributed to the viability and attraction as an international business centre. If the misguided youths ( with discernible malicious funding) chose to determine its future that that of its country, then it has done so to the extent that is evident. It is just as well, the China has stepped in to legislate those laws to provide the stability to stem HK from allowing its youths to destroy it permanently. The future of any country lies on its youth but when they do not act responsibly for the well being of the nation, regardless of their legitimate grievances, they should act to destroy the country. Perhaps, after 150 years of British rule without the “ vote “, in believing the obtaining the power under 2-China System, the youths who rioted in HK, ignored the basic and fundamental accompanying “ responsibilities “ with that freedom. The international business world will choose HK as an avenue to best serve their interests. HK youths must provide the right environment to make especially foreign investors feel they have this primary requisite. Palki is eloquent but can hardly have any genuine interest in the well being of HK. If anything, she shares with virtually most Indian commentators any opportunity to demonise China, in the illusion that it uplifts India in the process. India has massive internal problems which addressed will enabled her to rise to her potential status. It is only an illusion of standing tall when the surrounding is thrash to the ground, and illusion has no substance in reality.

I am a native Hongkonger still living in Hong Kong and I DID as an adult citizen live through HK’s colonial days, so don’t you dare talk BS about Hong Kong in front of me. Truth is Hong Kong has lost its edge over a number of years for lots of reasons, many unconnected with China. After the handover there has indeed been some clumsy mismanagement by the Chinese government and tonnes of mutual mistrust, but it was more than compensated by the sheer amount of business that China kept feeding to Hong Kong. If you think an Indian journalist has any standing to yap about Hong Kong, I’d recommend an extra strong cup of tea and lots of sleep - these do marvels to restore brain functions.
