Today on Game History Secrets we talk about the secret history behind how Capcom's Dead Rising studio fell apart. Dead Rising 3, Dead Rising 4 and Dead Rising 5 all had troubled developments that ultimately led to the closure of Capcom Vancouver. Troubles at the studio also contributed to the cancellation of at least 7 other games including new Dino Crisis and Onimusha games, as well as a side-scrolling title using the Mega Man IP.

Man, I "love" how the studio kept on spazzing out about how they sought inspiration from other games. Not once did they think to be inspired by Dead Rising 1 & 2.

they did say they were taking inspiration from it at one point(not in this video though), but when I played the game i didn't see anything that reminded me of the past games. I had a problem with Frank comboing weapons on the fly and the vehicle made me go, "how the fuck did you do that without a blow torch" i understand that this was a mechanic in 3 but it made sense in 3 because Nick was a mechanic and had most of what he needed on him. I used video game logic for most of the stupid shit in 3, but 4 i couldn't even use game logic for that sometimes

This isn’t as uncommon in the industry as you might think, especially for studios owned by larger companies. If you don’t always have another game ready to spin up as development on your current project ends you risk reduced budgets, restructuring (aka employees being asked/forced to move to other studios), layoffs or just being closed outright

As a die hard Dead Rising fan, I was so dissapointed in the game and immediately had to declare that the only reason a studio could make so many mistakes had to be because it was either rushed or that it was some inner turmoil. I'm glad and also sad to see that I was right. I would love to see a more dense and tighter packed Dead Rising 5 that wouldn't rely on nostalgia to try to push/reboot the franchise forward. Sadly, this great franchise ended on a sour and flat note :(

    3 жыл бұрын

@@DanielZeal One of the problems with it is that’s it’s very easy for other developers to copy. Ubisoft created a template for other companies to follow and plenty of games suffered from strict, rigid, bloated mission design because of it. Thank God Nintendo followed their own design. I played BotW for the first time over the summer and while I didn’t think it was a masterpiece, I was very impressed with how the game grabs your attention and leads you around to little secrets and stuff. The world itself was tons of fun to explore and there was hardly any bloat added to the missions. I guess the Korok seeds and shrines can be considered bloat, but I don’t think Nintendo really expected anyone to collect them all. Honestly, there’s really no need to seek them out. You can’t walk 10 feet in the game without tripping over one of these and they all do a pretty good job of attracting your attention anyway. And the most important thing is they’re fun to collect (at least the shrines are).

Chronicle Zombie My guess is that given the design and the mention of physical defects, they didn’t want the psychopaths to resemble people with Down syndrome, because that wouldn’t come off well. But that’s a poor excuse because you could just change the face model. I can’t really think of another reason because any villain is a psychopath and no one has a problem kicking the crap out of them.

Considering the design of "reindeer man" and the other concept art, it seems like they were leaning harder into an unfortunately ablest direction, villainizing and mocking people with pre-existing conditions rather than those who had a mental breakdown under the stress of the apocalypse, different context. In addition, murdering people who have had a psychotic episode and having generic "crazy" people that it's okay to cut down was always kind of iffy territory, given that most mentally unwell people aren't actually dangerous and it's a damaging stereotype in media that they are, it just took a number of years for the devs to realize that.

This is going to sound silly, but at this point I'm mourning the loss of DR4 and 5's early stages more than I do want a proper remake of Dead Rising. Even though they were all radically different from what I fell in love with the series, they at least sounded unique on paper by offering a different take on the zombie killing RPG formula, and I'll forever be disappointed that Capcom Vancouver rotated executive staff constantly while Japan shot down any game that felt interesting and had tons of promise. If CV was struggling so much to retain the core appeal of Dead Rising, they should've just been given complete creative freedom on a new zombie IP similar to Dead Island -> Dying Light That's not to say I dont want more Classic style Dead Risings, but at the same time I also want new things too. You can only do a series for so long before it eventually gets stale.

Honestly, they should just reboot the series at this point, I don't see how they could make a follow up to DR4 because of how much of a flop that game was, just naming the game DR5 would turn a lot of people off I feel like. Either a full reboot (a la DMC) or a full remake of DR1 would probably be a good next step. A reboot might be a better option though, so that way sequels of the reboot could be possible.

What a tragic series. DR is still one of my favorites of the era and probably of all time, and then there's even 3 which still has some genuinely impressive things going on despite the massive flaws. It's like the possibility of putting all of the ingredients together and making something to surpass the original concept was constantly there, but more and more ridiculous mistakes kept being made and we got a stead decline in quality instead of the Dead Rising game we always should have gotten.

Poor Capcom Vancouver. I can tell they really cared, even trying reviving dead IPs at the time (who would have known there's a 6th canceled Megaman title in the last 8 years), but everytime they tried something new, Capcom just wasn't confident enough to give them the budget they need. But goddamn, Dead Rising 4... What a huge mistake. The first red flag is to try to make it a rival to The Last Of Us. Serious gameplay and Dead Rising just don't match well. They should have stick to the formula and expand it instead of trying to be the TLoU killer. It will never gonna happen. Dead Rising 5 tho... That sounds awesome... until the stupid executive producers ruined the perfectly fine design. Ultimately though, it's down to the fault of executive producers who tried to incorporate something that's too different and unfitting to a Dead Rising game over and over again. The firing of the old DR producers is also a mistake on Capcom Japan's fault.

The timer is at the heart of Dead Rising. Without it, you get Dead Rising 4. Just think about the first Dead Rising game without the timer. There’s no agency to the story, to the side missions, it’s that pressure to be punctual that drove the game. Otherwise all there is to do is kill zombies and how long can you do that before getting bored?

Honestly, Project Climber sounded really generic. Aping the Last of Us and every other zombie survival setting wasn't gonna get people interested unless they had some unique hook, which it sounds like they didn't have. Also the studio trying so hard for "realism" which isn't that the franchise is about, so it was doomed from the start.

They could have called it Dead Rising: Gaiden, worked it in as a Dead Rising spin off. They did it with Resident Evil on GBC, and it worked (kinda), it just didn't sell very well and CAPCOM isn't exactly a stranger to trying new things. I think it would have been interesting at the very least.

So let me get this straight, Capcom hired a brand new team, filled with people who never worked on a Dead Rising game before, and then got mad at them and closed their studio because the game was different from previous Dead Rising Games? WHAT DID THEY EXPECT THEM TO MAKE WHEN THEY HIRED A TEAM COMPRISED ENTIERLLEY OF NEWCOMERS! Seriously, Capcom's adversary to change has really been hurting my opinion of them recently. While I love the new RE Remakes, I really wish they tried more experimental things again.
