University of Wisconsin got rid of DEI statements a little while back. Yesterday (Dec 13) the Republican Party dominated legislature successfully negotiated a rollback of DEI staffing with the Democratic Party appointed regents. The legislature used their control over funding. There were many statements of outrage from many corners of the University community, some Dems, and local print media. This despite same print mediapresenting reporting indicating they couldn't find any evidence of positive effects from the multi millions in spending on DEI efforts. Chat GPT says dropping DEI statements was also a response to legislature, but I haven't confirmed. .... I suspect, the prominence of recent administrative failures in the USA elite campuses, softened support yesterday as less than a week ago the regents voted to maintain status before flipping yesterday. The Wisconsin Republican program largely unappealing to me, but the House speaker's defiance of Trump, and effective push back to some of the bad practices that have gained popularity amongst Dems... Makes me happy. Never voted R, and given hold of Trump I still won't, but D's are pushing me away hard on this.

DEI seems like part of the trans-gender ideology or at least captured by it. I'm appalled at Dems, actually always have been. Back in the 60s people who claimed to be adherents o fFDR were conducting the Vietnam War. I vote Democratic but only truly support Bernie Sanders. I visited the FDR Library for a day last year and was struck by how far ahead of us they were. Universal health-care was fully accepted and probably would have been enacted in FDR lived. We might even have had a meaningful full-employment jobs program. I wonder if FDR would have dropped the bombs?

@@bobbresnahan8397DEI/intersectionality came first. Trans ideology is a more recent development. The trans identity group currently sits atop the intersectional victocracy.

Do either of you have any thoughts on the cancelling of Pro-Palestinian professors and students?

  • @willmercury

I do. 1) They haven't been canceled. 2) They're not pro-Palestinian, they're pro-Hamas, who are not pro-Palestinian, but anti-Semitic. 3) They can say whatever they like, but if it turns into calls for violence and proceeds to direct physical harassment, they may get what they get and they don't get upset. 5) They suck.

Good question! Florida is going nuts running over the first amendment. There is now an Israeli flag and statement of support for Israel on the web site of the public college I went to there. I see no reason why public colleges should have foreign flags on their web sites.

@carolyna.869 From an article I found. "He teaches a course on cross-cultural psychology, which combines psychology, sociology, and race/ethnicity studies, and asks students to critically examine issues within all races, cultures, and ethnic groups." Wow, that seems hard to do in today's environment. I don't know how someone could teach that subject honestly without some woke kids complaining, and the administration should have understood that. His tweets were just an honest look at the subject, but I don't think he would have gotten his job back in a blue state. I actually went to UCF, around 25 years ago, back when biology instructors didn't have to pretend that there were more than two sexes.

29:12 it was fair to characterise mask use by non-professionals not trained to correctly handle the mask as having high failure rate - months of nurses and pharmacists showing the public how to wear and dispose improved its use. So I see the argument that it was plato’s noble lie but a truism just as there was a supply crisis and without health care workers we would have been up shit creek without a paddle.

At the very beginning of the epidemic, even the need for any masks for the public was denied. This was a lie used to avoid a run on masks, all of which were in short supply then.
