It doesn’t bother me that Dead&Co do some songs slower, they’re still GREAT songs played by GREAT musicians. Michael hits the nail on the head as to why they do it. If you take note of the songs that are slowed down, some, not all, but a good number of them were songs that JERRY sang, not Bobby. Bob’s style is very unique and A-tonal. Many of his chord voicings are not easily done whilst one is singing. Those chord shapes aren’t easy to find without looking at the fretboard, and it’s hard to look at the fretboard while singing. So naturally, you slow the song down to accommodate for that. Jerry’s chord voicings are relatively easy to find/make while singing because they’re easier to find without looking at the fretboard, therefore, you can play at a faster tempo. Also, half of Dead&Co are in their 70’s and still playing at a higher level than a vast majority of musicians out there today, how about we cut them just a little slack. ⚡️💀⚡️

I really enjoy DeadCo but the tempo HAS been something that’s an adjustment for my ears/senses, now I at least understand the WHY...what I don’t understand is why Bob doesn’t just sing Bob songs and let John or Oteil handle all of the Jerry stuff... Saw them in ‘16 and John sang “Black Muddy River” it was WONDERFUL, then I saw Bobby do it and it just ain’t the same, by a long shot IMO.

A first set D&C Shakedown will always be slower because Bob believes the magic lies in syncing with the energy of the crowd. It is kind of a spiritual 'Dead' kind of thing that when it works it is amazing and when it doesn't? Well.... John Mayer has talked extensively about how at first Bob's tempos were completely frustrating. But over time he has learned to trust Bob's instincts. John has even tried to incorporate 'audience' tempos into his solo concerts. The drummers are also notorious for dragging down tempos (especially Mickey). Thankfully, over the last couple of tours, John has earned the right to call tempos for the songs he sings (just not too fast). As the man who holds the record for the most stage time, Bob has earned the right to be quirky. In addition to tempo, Bob is now known for his odd guitar effects, thin stringy tone and at times being impossible to hear clearly. I have even seen him do a whole Red Rocks Other Ones concert where he sang so quietly you could barely hear him. But quirky Bob is always better than no Bob.

Thanks for this. I've learned a couple things that will definitely improve me playing this. I had no idea about the C7 or C9 at the end of a verse. I too always played a quick Bb. I appreciate the help. Also, that "little F#" eluded me as well. Now I have something to add there! During the chorus, I always thought they were bouncing between chords, not just playing C7. I just can't figure it out. Do they really just play C7? I'm so glad you told people to give other musicians as much info as possible. I do, despite that some musicians are too lazy to look at the videos and chords I provide. One day they'll learn through failure that they ought to take advantage of what they're given. That may sound harsh, but it's disrespectful at the very least to the music when they 1/2 ass it. I have that Premier version of Bobby's guitar. Possibly too many options on it. Twenty years ago, Steely Dan could have made this theirs!

MP I completely agree with your analysis on why the tempo is ratcheted down. My first show was 12/31/78. I was 14. Kind of a good show ;/. I hit it hard and strong, dozens and dozens of shows. I stopped going, cold turkey, when the touch of grey crew showed up and they stopped playing Marin Civic, Berkeley Community etc etc. The whole vibe totally shifted within less than a year. (At Marin Civic I watched Jerry pull into the ;parking lot in his old beemer, park in the general lot, and just get out and walk over to the backstage entrance. Everyone just let him be.) I went to see Dead and Co for the first time right before the shutdown. It was awesome (I took my 15 y/o daughter.....what a trip that was) but it was super clear that Bob was much slowed down (duh. We all are) Oh, and that 15 y/o daughter is now 17 and loves the guitar and takes your online lessons and loves them !!! Thank you MP.

One of the low-hanging fruits for artificial intelligence, is isolating instrument and vocal parts in recordings already mastered. Already, there is a website that charges a very small amount to isolate the parts of any recording you load up. There are a myriad of implications from this. But one certainly is learning to play instrument parts, from recordings.

I've always been a fan of Bobby's guitar playing and have taken slack from plenty of musicians but I believe there is some genius to what Bobby is doing on the guitar as a rhythm guitar player. Most people describe Bobby's parts as "a lead rhythm guitar player" as it may be somewhat true we gotta look at what he is playing in terms of relativity to the other guys in the band. Bobby's job is to connect Jerry and Phil but as Bobby says in his own words that he took a cue from McCoy Turner and the likes of Bill Evans. In other words Bobby took influence from how the piano is played and then translated to guitar. Bobby's the man

Hey Michael, I really enjoy the Grateful Dead guitar tips. Thanks.
I recommended some months ago that you should look at Bobby's parts. This is awesome, and glad you have a reason to learn it now!
Just had to pause it... Just to say thank you for this one! Thank you for speaking in music.
That was awesome to watch. Thanks and good luck at the gig.
Top Notch / tutorial Michael. I’ve been on the guitar for a long time and after watching your videos I’ve gotta wonder what the hell have I been focusing on all this time It’s all fun stuff either way Crucial thanks
Lately it occurs to me! What a loooooong strange trip its been!
Not too many people breaking down Dead songs! Thanks man!! Lovin' it!!

Love you man great video! Very helpful ❤️
Bobby dropping a few clams? No way! ;o) Michael, an incredible display of Bob's guitar work is from 7-17-88 at the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA. The outro from Playing In The Band into Uncle John's Band is amazing. Weir is just splashing color against Jerry's leads. You can find it on archive.org. The audience recording is spectacular.
Bobby looking swole from swinging that sledgehammer around 💪
Please react to "Richie Kotzen-Remember (Live In Brasil) (Full Version) " MINDBLOWING playing and singing! One video is not enough though. Richie Kotzen is by far, my favorite guitar player along with Andy Timmons. So versatile and a killer singer. Plays bass, keyboards, banjo and many other instruments too!
"That would really catch some heads off guard...but it would pull, it would pull." I love it.

This is by far my favorite GD song. The one I don't have to be in the mood for. I don't play guitar beyond one string (keyboard/clarinet/drum player,) but I hope get there someday. Thank you for sharing this with us. I hope you shared the performance, please add it to the info. ;)
Been wanting to learn Bobby’s part on this for a sec Awesome Thank you!!
Bobby is amazing
That single lightning type strike on C does occur on some performances as opposed to the full movement, and is enjoyed.
Great work as always !
Dude! Thanks for your lessons! Stoked for Jerry lessons. Got me to buy a guitar again
you should check out the isolated bobby video. its just him playing without the other guys. its really interesting to hear his sound alone because its so unique
I was at that Bristow show and it was my first time seeing them also!
Love it. Just played if for my son
ive seen so many bands at the 8x10. james cotton with luther tucker was one of the best

I played the 8x10 with my band for a little music festival!
For me I don’t think much of it when dead and company plays some songs slower myself. I’ve been a dead head for a long time now and I always enjoy the music because of how the band plays their songs. I believe you have the footage from the Bristow show in 2019 and I was at the concert! Such a good show! You should watch the whole thing if you haven’t already.
Was literally thinking the last time I heard the song ( a week ago) damn Bobby’s really kicking some riffs underneath everything
Can’t wait for the live show Sunday night!!!!!!!
Love your channel, especially anything Dead related!..💀💀👂🏻👁👁
Yo I don't know whether you wanna do a video on it or not, but you should check out the shakedown bobby did with wolf bros/pack at Vail this summer. It's a very unique shakedown, plus it's bobby with a string and horn section and chementi! Also love your channel, watch all the time
Great as always :-)
I like that you're not telling us how to play a lick here and there, but how to think things through, so thanks for that. Although you do teach us plenty of licks.
I had to go listen to the 17 minute version from SF New Year’s 84. Thanks!
Congrats on the gig. I loved to see you guys play but I live in Colorado. But my best friend is the keyboard player in Shakedown Street, a Denver based dead cover band. Check them out on FB. Break a leg!!!
If you like John Mayer collabs, you need to react to John Mayer and Keith Urban on CMT Crossroads 2010!!!
I've used the youtube speed tool and Dead & Co are playing mostly at 90% normal speed
I was there too!
I played the "Bobby" parts when my band use to play Shakedown or any GD song really. Michael Johnson of the Deadbeats from New Paltz area in upstate NY is one of the best in playing Bobby parts..
I like this guy.

where it is. And then the F natural is also not weird where it is. Gotta modulate just like in Eyes of the World, Morning Dew, etc.

Chris Grabowski aka Lost Smoke : The chords in the chorus are tricky. They definitely slip that 9th in there - especially Bob’s off-beat stabs at the end of the first and the third chorus lines. It’s like a cat asking “Mmryeow?”.
When you mentioned you are going to listen to what the other guys are doing that is exactly what it was all about for the Dead. If you don't know what's going on around you then it's gonna be a bad time. Mid 89 to Fall 90 were some of the very best shows later in their career so you picked a good one to look at for the live version.
Help on the way, August 13, 1975 Grand american ballroom , one of the best introductions in music, the whole show is fire, the whole band is on
MP I completely agree with your analysis on why the tempo is ratcheted down.

You should check out Last Fair Deal out of VA Beach or Splintered Sunlight out of Philly. They have both played at the 8x10. SS plays there every year for Abagail's birthday. You'll learn a lot from Patrick Higgins
You are correct that Bobby singing is why its slower. Both Bobby and Mayer have said Bobby wants the tempos slower because its more comfortable for Bobby
I saw God street wine at the 8x10 and it changed my life. You should check them out some time!
Lol. Bobby got REAL lost there! Thousands of hits of LSD...... we'll cut him some slack.

I will always defend Dead and Cos tempos and find that it doesn’t hamper the magic of this music. Shakedown is the one exception. Its a song that needs a little speed to it
Loved, "love that D'Angelico w the P-90s" My wonderful wife just bought me that D'Angelico Bedford Weir for my 50th! Is anything cooler than your woman buying you a guitar??
I know these are longer, but It would be cool if you kept some of these deeper dives in the rotation. Anyways thank you
Bobby fucking up the songs are like the most interesting part nowadays haha
Bob Weir. Enigma. Why can't he do what I can do? Why can't I do what he can? We know Jerry & Phil are born genius level; Bob a learner. Can you help me? What is Bobby doing in the middle minor modal section of Playing In The Band, say on the Ace album? 32 10 beat bars? Low ambiguous chords? Keeping off Jerry's turf? How about the chords behind the sax solo on Weather Report Suite (Wake Of The Flood)? Especially the last bit! Challenge - arrange the Main Ten intro and dual lead sections for solo guitar.
Loved the 8x10
Love the dead videos 🤟

I love that semi hollow.. Sounds so sweet..
I'm excited to watch you closely to see you hit all the little things you mention in these gig prep videos! Is tonight going to be a catch up video for all the SC from last Tuesday?
I would like to see you score this song for a full orchestra.
Should do the 70s scarlet begonias Bobby used to play. Before they hacked their way with a B and and A only in the 90s. He was playing completely different chords progressions in the 70s.
Dialing in fron London england here
Those "little tight chimey pieces" are all Bobby does in Dead and Go.

Really hope you used Bobby shorts for the show!
Bobby's the man
Next time try 12/28/78 Golden Hall- that's a real Shakedown. No Mayer. No Brent toy keyboards.
try the JRAD version
Do "if we were vampires" by jason isbell. Best lyrics in a song to this date... I know you will love it. Please try it!
I've played the 8x10 many times
I often loved watching Bob work his rhythm magic more than Jerry's parts. Seems Bob liked to change up his chord variations on every verse. And yes, these days Bob has Dead & Co. slow most everything down significantly.
C9 - yes
Is there going to be live stream of the show tonight?
CAN YOU REACT TO TAJ FARRANT's FUN TRACK OR KFIR's RIDE THE DRAGON
does this guy have any videos of him just playin
So good!! I'll be watching Sunday. Have you seen Marcus King's new(ish) cover of Superstar (The Carpenter's)? MY GOODNESS! Check it out.
hello, I recommend you use the HeadyVersion.com page, it shows you the best version chosen by the community of each Grateful Dead song.
According to what I've heard, the slower tempos the last few years are more related to the drummers wanting to slow down. I understand Mickey has arthritis and it is hampering him some, not wanting to hit so hard as he has in the past.
When I hear a bootleg that Bobby really stands out it dumbfounds me. He is so good. Jerry is my Jesus but Bobby is Buddha at least.
I've been watching some dead and co lately and even wondered in some videos if his guitar is even on. I'm no expert by any means but it just doesn't look like Bobby is "with it" as far as his guitar playing.
You first have to put on a pair of tight jeans shorts and a tank top if you're gonna tackle any of Bob Weir's parts.
React to a song by Elder!
When the 8x10 opens back up, you have to see a better of dead show. They’re the best local dead cover band by far!
