The result is that free oxygen binds to the surface proteins of the lungs, interferes with the operation of the central nervous system and also attacks the retina. In short...its harmful

Sounds not so good. I googled it and at seam to be really a bad idea to breath 100% oxygen. 95% oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide seams to be the most healthy way possible.

Good question! The chick does create some waste products as it grows (but not that much) - this gets collected outside its body in a special membrane called the allantois. This gets dehydrated and is discarded with the egg after hatching.
