How Baseball’s “Best” Team Collapsed In ONE Month

Спорт

Thanks for watching! The New York Yankees began the season as the best team in baseball. But quickly, fell down to one of the worst teams over the last month. Is it a slump? Or are the Yankees not as good as people have been saying...?

Same goes for most jobs in the real world, but that's off topic. Baseball is nothing without us fans and our $ and the New York Yankees are a PREMIERE team; or so I thought. They need a change. It really doesn't LOOK like they are built for the big games. On paper that team looks vicious. But then you look over at Baltimore and see how consistent everyone on the Orioles is and it just seems like the Yankees are trying their strategy of "just throw money at it until it works" again. Meanwhile the Orioles still have the best farm system in the league, a roster loaded from top to bottom with talent that they've managed to turn into results. The Orioles only real problem area has been their pitchers and that's not surprising to anyone who's read word one about them. Yet this year, despite over half of their regular starters going down with injury, or still being out from previous injuries, they still managed to have a better record at the break by beating the Yankees the day before the break. Corbin Burnes has been a monster as advertised. And with the other guys all getting closer and closer to getting back into health this team is likely going to start their peak playing right as the playoffs start and will be a problem for everyone. The Yankees though seem like they could crumble before they get that far. I still think they'll finish 2nd in the AL, as that much talent shouldn't ever finish lower in any division.

The New York Yankees face a significant challenge with their bullpen, particularly with the closing role. The closer's job is to seal victories and maintain leads, and when this role is compromised, it affects the entire team. Recently, Yankees' starting pitchers have given their all to secure leads, only to see their efforts squandered by an unreliable closer, impacting their morale and performance. Frequent blown saves are demoralizing and have shaken the team's confidence, disrupting their momentum and making it difficult to build winning streaks crucial for playoff contention. Clay Holmes has shown flashes of brilliance but is not a reliable high-stakes closer. His inability to close games consistently is hurting the team. In the playoffs, every game is crucial, and the margin for error is minimal. The Yankees need a proven, reliable closer who can handle high-pressure situations and deliver consistently to stabilize the bullpen and restore team confidence. Additionally, holding onto LeMahieu and Torres past their prime has been detrimental to the team's performance. To have a shot at the playoffs, it is imperative that Cashman addresses these issues quickly. Acquiring a dependable closer, bolstering the starting rotation and middle relief, and making tough decisions regarding underperforming veterans are necessary steps.

The team has been a victim of injuries for the last 7 years. Every single year of the last 7 years, at least 1-2 major players have been out for significant time and that’s tanked the record of the team. It’s not a stretch to call the Yankees the best team in the league roster wise, but the pitching has been underperforming to such an insane degree that they’ve been one of the worst teams in the league the last month despite definitely having the highest potential of any team in the league

If Volpe and Rice include on the upward trajectory they’re on currently and as long as Cashman resigns Soto, I think the Yankees will definitely be the best team in the league in 1-2 seasons as long as they get some better bullpen arms. I think calling 2022 Aaron Judge "the best player in baseball" is a big stretch. The best home run hitter? Definitely. The best hitter? Yeah, I agree with that I think. But the best PLAYER? Definitely not. His whole case for even being AL MVP is based around his breaking the record and the fact that WAR is a terribly imperfect stat that is weighted too heavily towards hitting. There's absolutely zero chance that anyone objective (not a Yankees/ Aaron Judge fan) could look at the difference between Ohtani and Judge's offensive numbers in 2022 (about .230 OPS) and tell me that is more valuable than a top of the rotation starter throwing 166 innings with a 2.33 ERA. It's not. Nobody on earth would trade, for example Gerrit Cole and a SS with a .700 OPS and league average defense for a SS with a .930 OPS and league average defense if salaries and everything else were equal. The award isn't called "AL favorite player" its not called "Most Liked Player" or "player with coolest achievement" it's not even called "Player of the Year" or something like that that would be open to interpretation. It's called AL Most VALUABLE Player, and Judge was simply not the most valuable player in 2022. Nobody going into 2023 would have chosen Judge over Ohtani to build a team around. And that's before we even get into the fact that he's not the best fielder (he's not bad but he's far from the best) he's not stealing you bases or racking up outfield assists with his arm. All of his tools outside of his power are somewhere between pedestrian and poor. He's a great player. He's a future HOFer. He's NOT the best player in baseball.
