How Authentic Caribbean Rum Is Made

To the people of the Caribbean rum is a way of life; it's their livelihood and their passion: As Andre Winter, Manager of St Lucia Distillery commented 'it is what we drink, it is what we produce'.
Join our panel of Authentic Caribbean Rum experts to discover the making of rum - from lush sugarcane fields to beautifully preserved distilleries. It's a journey through history. A history that has been in the making for over 400 years.
Step-by-step, we see the ancient process of transforming sugarcane into the heavenly spirit worthy of being called Authentic Caribbean Rum. From fermentation to distillation, and ageing to the magical art of blending we witness the creation of the perfect combination of the flavours and aromas that we find in every drop of rum.

    Where did this recipe come from? Who came up with the recipe to make Rum? Was it based on an accidental discovery? trial and error? I got interested in rum having eaten rum flavoured cookis and egg nogg. But reinforced after seeing the movie Treasure Island and later Pirates of the Caribbean where Captain Jack Sparrow hid his stash of rum on a deserted island dune of sand. I puchased a tiny sample bottle of Captain Morgan (that tasted like listerine's original mouth wash recipe). I am certain the real rum recipe is much more satisfying. Enjoyed learning the process how real rum is made and appreciating the toil and aging process involved that makes the added expense much more rewarding. Will taste test this version next. But not for drinking.

    Many alcoholic drinks have come around by just simply eating or cooking unripe foods. Almost any fruit contains alcohol, whether you know it or not. There are yeasts on the skins and once you blend them with a liquid, your liquid will start fermenting. Especially in the older days where it would be hard to store foods at lower temperatures, this process would probably have developed quickly. People drank it, enjoyed it, and started doing it again. Now as for distilling, that's another process. Probably people tried to get the germs out of it by cooking it and they liked the smell of alcohol or something.

    Well, Ethanol actually evaporates at 78,4 C, not at 80 C. The Rum looked good, if it tastes as good it's delicious.

  • @Cornz38

    I think they collect UPTO 80c, that way you get the tails which is where almost all the flavour is. I use dark sugar and molasses and collect from 74 upto 80c. As soon as I hit that temp, I stop. Then I add toasted oak and leave for a year.

    Have you ever heard of "social conventions"? In a 3 minutes video, 1,6 C of difference is irrelevant, specially when the 99,99% of world population has nothing to do with distillation process during their life. 80 C is more than satisfactory. I hate picky complaining people

  • @kalleklp7291

    @kalleklp7291

    It's not the point..! It's like saying the day has 25 hours. If he said "At roughly 80 C, it evaporates", everything would be fine. Also, I was not complaining just getting facts right.

    That guy knows exactly when ethanol evaporates, is his job. The point is that nobody gives a shit if it evaporates at 78,4 C instead. Save your energies for better comments
