How are synthetic ester base oils synthesised?

Ғылым және технология

Synthetic esters are an extremely important part of the modern lubrication ecosystem. As a co-base to many PAO synthetic lubricants they offer additive solvency and deposit control, while as a main base stock they form the foundation of some compressor oils, fire retardant oils, jet engine oils, and biodegradable lubricants.
Esters come in an infinite array of forms, but the basic synthesis is a reaction of an organic acid with an alcohol. In this video we look at some of the common approaches to ester base oil synthesis and how this affects the final molecular structure.
Here at Lubrication Expert we take a first-principles approach to lubricants and greases; helping industry understand lubrication technology and pushing the limits of what is possible.

    Thanks for the upload, love the channel. I have no chemistry background but I am also not a complete dullard. When I look up PAOs or Esters, half the channels explanation of oils seem to be aimed at 2 year olds. They show marbles of different sizes to explain how the molecular structure is different, all kinds of silly unscientific explanations. Your channel is everything I was looking for, you summarize the topic in a technical way that even someone with no chemistry background can understand. Very interesting stuff.

    Thanks! Really appreciate the feedback. That's the exact reason this channel was started - there isn't really much content pitched toward people with more technical interest.

    Awesome. That’s the stuff I was looking for! Now I can roughly understand the hydrodynamic effect of lubricants, despite the very basic of: thicker (more viscous) lubricant equals thicker film 😀

    Good Stuff. So is this Di ester is also known as double ester core for Motul 300V lineup. What's single ester and double ester in these type of base oils.

    Hello! greetings from Chile! Thanks for sharing this information. Can you please explain which are the main differences between saturated and unsaturated esters?

  • @LubricationExplained

    @LubricationExplained

    Good question. Unsaturated esters basically have one or more C-C bonds which contain a double bond. The second of the two bonds can be broken with less energy than a single C-C bond, making them slightly less oxidatively stable. Double bonds also alter the geometry of the molecule because they are not straight. I cover it a bit in: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6B5085mqbHFcdY.html

    Hi, any chance to explain pros and cons of types of ester / diester base oil like bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate (DOS) compared to polyolester in their application in engine oil, and how does it react when fuel dillution is present, And please explain how can esters have such cleaning ability compared to PAO or hydrotreated mineral oil Thanks in advance

    Again, great suggestion, we'll get there eventually! Diester compared with polyol ester is a particularly important comparison for jet turbine oils, as the first generation were based on diester but now the whole industry is polyol esters.

    As a general rule - PAOs for engines. Higher VI (most of the time) and they aren't as sensitive to water.

    Not a stupid question at all! Technically yes, the two are miscible, however esters may be incompatible with the seals on your engine, so that is something to check first.

    is ester oil good for flat tappet engines or vtwin? or stay with higher zinc oil?

  • @LubricationExplained

    @LubricationExplained

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question. So most high Zinc oils will have a bit of ester in the formulation anyway. I've read some literature that indicates esters are polar enough that in some circumstances they can muscle-out antiwear additives on metal surfaces. On the other hand, you get more film strength out of an ester, so it's probably a wash. Higher zinc is the general recommendation for older flat tappets because a lot of engine oils aren't thick enough to separate the cam surfaces - in that instance you need additives to help out.

    I don't know how you could buy it in a pure raw form, but I do know that Stihl uses this ester in their 2 stroke oil named HP Ultra. Maxima Super M 2 stroke oil is another brand, but at a lower concentration of tmp compared to Stihl's formulation.
