How Airbnb designs for trust | Joe Gebbia
Joe Gebbia, the co-founder of Airbnb, bet his whole company on the belief that people can trust each other enough to stay in one another's homes. How did he overcome the stranger-danger bias? Through good design. Now, 123 million hosted nights (and counting) later, Gebbia sets out his dream for a culture of sharing in which design helps foster community and connection instead of isolation and separation.

13:42/16:00 "What if homes were designed to be shared from the ground up? What if cities embraced a culture of sharing? I see a future of shared cities that bring us community and connection instead of isolation and separation." When we think about it, 100-200 years ago, this was was villages and communities originally were built from. People knew everyone, people knew their children, you actually knew your neighbor. With covid, we are more separated than ever from those just around the corner. Airbnb provides you a trusted way to meet new interesting people around the world. I love this.
Turning fear into fun seems great to me. Getting out of the box and breaking stigmas can give you the opportunity to see things that others do not see.

I know the story from Uruguay. It amazes me everytime I hear it
I've had TONS of great AB&B experiences. I love how you can go to another city to see friends, and then when they find out how nice your digs are, they want to hang out at your place rather than you going to theirs! You won't save much money, but HOLY SCHNIKIES the quality and home-iness is so much better!
@andy4an
8 жыл бұрын
"digs" is slang for your house. when the hotels in an area are charging $100 a night, you might not be able to find nice AB&B for significantly less that that. It is still worth it because hotels are not very restful places, and having a home to yourself is really chill and fun. Often, the savings comes when you have a LOT of people. For instance, if you've got like 6 people, that could be 2 or more hotel rooms, but you might be able to find a house that can handle that for the same cost as one hotel room.
@andy4an
8 жыл бұрын
***** MOST of the AB&Bs that I've stayed at have been MORE anonymous than hotels. At a hotel, you need to check-in at the desk to get your key. Lots of AB&Bs they give you the code to the lower floor apartment, and you never see them at all.
@andy4an
8 жыл бұрын
***** The fact remains that it is less standard than a hotel. Some of them may be more relational, but I'm an introvert, and I don't seek out any more attention than is absolutely required of the host. If a hotel works for you, then fine. AB&B certainly isn't for everyone.

There is a certain amount of truth and fact in the "stranger - danger" concept. While actual bad incidents do occur and may be in the minority of cases; it only takes one to ruin or even forfeit your life!

In India 100 years before house were built with platform with roof at the entrance to accommodate travelers for free. recently it was gone and came back as Airbnb with cost.
Inspiring. Im working my own shared economy concept at the moment. This really helped.

AJ Smith Interesting. I agree time is money, especially if your time is limited. I'm a friendly guy, but not rampantly extroverted. I wouldn't be interested in opening up my home to strangers purely for the sake of meeting travelers. (Maybe I should rethink this. I've crossed paths with tourists I'd have loved to get to know better.) I can see how some people in some countries might want to practice their English, for example. I wouldn't mind practicing my German, Spanish, or French. ;-)

Joe Gebbia's idea is wonderful. Already, in India, this tradition of 'sharing our home" is very much prevalent. That's why we say "Athithi Devo Bhava' ( Guest is God). It's really a fantastic feeling on one side and on the other hand, you can drastically cut down your bills. It's certainly a win-win deal for the giver and taker. Highly recommended for all.

I love staying in other people's homes. I've had way more memorable experiences renting apartments than I've ever had at hotels. Too bad many AirBnb hosts nowaydays are just basically just companies using the service to avoid standards and costs associated with hotels.

I like him for just sponsoring Manor F1 last year!
¿Alguien más desde el Diplomado Neurociencia Gestión del Talento Humano? Muy bueno!!! muchos slaudos

While I generally have a low opinion of people in general, I'd always assumed that most random strangers would be perfectly trustworthy as a guest in your home. I just worried about the risk associated with the one random guy that isn't. Also, I'm intrigued by the fact that the customer reviews are implied to NOT be a broken cesspool of entitled whining like hotel reviews are.
@alwaysuseless
8 жыл бұрын
+leadfoot9x Good question. My guess is that people who are inclined to be entitled whiners about hotels might be more appreciative toward a more personal arrangement. It's probably easier to feel entitled with an institution/commercial business, than with an individual host.
@elizabethferris3211

+TheBermuda Did she have a terrible experience with customer service or with the host?
@thebermudaI

+Stefanos Van Dijk The host harassed her and customer service seemed to follow a script that was more focused on convincing my sister not to sue Airbnb (which she wasn't going to do in the first place) than on actually finding her a new place for the night. My sister received a refund, but she had to find a motel to stay at herself.

It would be nice if Airbnb would align with all the major tourisms actors and remove their fees if the trip is cancelled. It is definitely quite unfair to keep the money of a deal that just couldn't go through. So far, Airbnb is not moving anywhere near such a measure. Is money the only thing they understand? It had to come from the U.S.A. for sure...
I couldnt stop staring at his shoes. what is the brand ? :D
Do you know that Airbnb is causing a big problem for locals in cities? Because of this model, the price for a house is now by the skies..., and also, now a large percent of the new homes are just... tiny apartments that are no bigger than a bedroom, that is just built for one purpose: renting on those apps. But a considerable cost: Citizens have been forced to live outside cities because of the unaffordable cost of buying a home caused by speculation. Also, the houses are now only small bedroom's, something you could not ever call home, totally inhuman.

alwaysuseless I am speaking of the small subset of people I know that own a home in Calgary and also have used the Airbnb service. This includes a total of 2 persons. One had a few thousand dollars damage done to their hardwood flooring by a pet that was not mentioned in the agreement and one had the house heavily damaged by a "rave" party. The second made the news if you care to investigate. I know it is not a large sample, but that is my experience nonetheless.

+ChaosmanOne Jeez! Thanks for the reply. Your sample is relevant despite its small size. It balances out others who will relate good experiences with similarly small sample sizes. I could be mistaken, but it sounds like your friends could have avoided problems if they had been more hands-on. The speaker made it sound like the usual arrangement is someone's staying a few nights in the guest bedroom of the host's house. It sounds like your friends rented out completely separate apartments that may not have even been located on the same lot. Were your friends able to get any compensation from the guests or AirBnB?
