How AI Can Save Lives | SciShow Compilation

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming an integral part of our everyday lives. Here’s a number of ways in which it manages to make life better for us humans.
The project we described in this video has ended, but many scientists recruit for citizen science projects over at www.zooniverse.org/.
There’s also the Did You Feel It project, where anyone who feels a rumble can fill out a quick survey and report it to the US Geological Survey: earthquake.usgs.gov/data/dyfi/.

    That super-surgery implement is not a robot; it is a WALDO, named after the Heinlein sci-fi book WALDO & MAGIC INCORPORATED. A souped-up super-versatile device to allow people to do remote handling of dangerous or too-tiny/big material by the user's own hands. If the machine was able to do surgery by itself, with only general human supervision (like THE DOCTOR in STAR TREK: VOYAGER) would it be a robot, rather than just a marionette...

    was reading about a researcher using AI to develop Alzheimer's drug candidates which are chemically similar to nerve agents. just for grins he tweaked the rules to find the MOST deadly "drugs" instead of the least. and was shocked that it developed several VX analogies. The thing AI can't replicate, at least not yet anyway, is the human ability of "the gut feeling", taking a chance, just bypassing logic because something inside says one way is the right way despite little to no evidence to back them up, sometimes it screws us over, but a lot of the time it does work, mostly just by pure chance, but that's all part of the human adventure... :)

    Why are all planets spherical? can we have other shapes?

  • @CyberiusT

    @CyberiusT

    2 жыл бұрын

    They're not. They're spheroids. I know, that's a super-annoying bit of nit-picking, but it does actually matter in this case. All planets _would_ be spheres _if_ they didn't spin, but they do - and the faster they spin, and the 'softer' the make-up (ie: gas vs rock) the less spherical the planet will be. As to other shapes... Well, say you built a planet-sized cube. The gravity generated by the mass would pull the cube vertices harder than the face centres. Over time (geological time - many millions of years), those vertices will collapse to be about the same distance from the centre of the planet as the face centres, and you have a sphere again. I say 'about' because on human scales that vertical difference might be very large indeed - like Mount Everest. But, if you scaled Earth down to the size of an 8 ball, an actual 8 ball would have bigger bumps on its surface than the Earth model.

    Not to hate on the medical/pharmaceutical industry too much, but there’s a reason that AI is used for that and not quantum/theoretical physics. Humans are just better at some things than others! Abstraction and creativity pave the way for math and science, while mountains of medical papers need an AI editor/interpreter to understand and compile all the relevant data to form a new drug that even has a theoretical chance of working. Too bad physicists and mathematicians are paid 1/100th of their cohorts salaries simply because they understand the fundamental nature of reality better and more deeply. The human body is complex, but truly, far too much money is wasted on paying hundreds of thousands of people to do the work that AI can do in its sleep. Anyway all love to the medical people, you’ll probably extend my life, I just wish you all were better and smarter than you’ve been in the past. I guess a huge paycheck might help, but you really should be in it for the benefit of humanity more than your own pocket. Just my outta pocket opinion, feel free to roast me below loll
