How AI and Democracy Can Fix Each Other | Divya Siddarth | TED

We don't have to sacrifice our freedom for the sake of technological progress, says social technologist Divya Siddarth. She shares how a group of people helped retrain one of the world's most powerful AI models on a constitution they wrote - and offers a vision of technology that aligns with the principles of democracy, rather than conflicting with them.

We can only hope and wish her voice and perspective would become a dominate force in the future of AI and Technology. But our education system here in America does not create a citizenry with an understanding of truth and moral democratic behaviours. Instead technology, and soon AI, through the proliferation of social media platforms, has created a citizenry of doubters and misbelievers who would not recognize a fact or statement of truth if they bit them in the 'you know where'. One only needs to look at our politicians, who were raised in our education system, and their disdain for truth and democracy simply because it gives them their political power.

I felt like the talk had a lot of big pre-made sentences without developing further. If you want to make people understand why this idea could work, don't just say what can and has and could be done, show it. Show examples, processes. If it's confidential, is it really democratic?

Given the sheer amount of negative, unfounded, randomly critical commentary that does not really relate to the content of the speech, this is probably one of the most powerful and so far most underrated TED talks ever.

For Managed Democracry!! For Super Earth!! hahah! On a serious note, there is great technology for democratic processes. Our hurdle is that it is a leap and as she says it is young within our civilization. There is really cool technology like Episode 4 of "This Giant Beast that is the Economy" features Swarm Intelligence AI that aggregates collective choice. You can look up Louis Rosenberg of Unanimous AI.

What is she even talking about?? Are we supposed to completely surrender to AI models and accept that we cannot live together in social harmony unless our decisions are made for us by computers?? Like your average politician, she said a lot without actually saying anything. It was all slogans and buzzwords. She may as well have said nothing at all, and it would've been just as meaningful. I did catch a whiff of censorship in her words, though, and I don't see how that could possibly be compatible with a "democratic" society in which everyone gets to decide what's best for the majority. Especially not if AI models are really making the decisions. This TED talk confused me. It seems to mean nothing. It's an iPhone ad. Streamlined, airbrushed and empty.

You really think it's going to give one millisecond of thought to your "status", your "identity", your political leanings, or anything we can't seem to stop infighting about? Color is only going to be a factor in "the drones can target the darker humans easier by day, and the lighter ones are easier to hunt at night." Because all this junk that distracts and divides us is SOOOO important from an objective perspective. Lol

Many of us do not fear AI for its own sake. I would happily trust this woman with the future of AI because she has a humanistic outlook. The difficulty as I see it is that to a geat many people the subject of liberal values, equality, community, collective ownership, democracy and constitution are trigger points for reactionary behaviours and the implementation of restrictive powers. The vision here is admirable. I'd love to see it happen but Taiwan is not the USA.

Real Democracy never exist as a 1st point, and as a software engineer, this is the most $tup1d thing I have listen about AI topics, software is manageable by their creators and they can handle it as they want, so what does it means? That AI can be guided through any agenda or company that can afford they "payment", otherwise any software is perfect, all of them have vulnerabilitys, in other words, can be hackable. It's a shame how technology can help a very few percentage to progress and to evolve with a good and safe use, but the most part are like this girl, depends completely blinded by technology make us year by year more useless and noncritical people, at the point that people lost any ability to do anything by their own achievements, for their dependence to any technology. Example: Google AI

Like we absolutely could but those in power don’t want that and they won’t allow AI to be used too give the populace control over our own society because the elites wouldn’t benefit from that. I appreciate her enthusiasm though. interesting talk.

There are 4 times more psychopaths in government and CEO positions than average. (Brian Klaas interviewed 500 psychopaths) All AGI needs to do is weed out the bad apples. Surely it can learn to recognise psychopaths, as it can diagnose cancer 1000 times faster than humans. If an MRI scan can recognise a psychopath, AGI should be able to do it faster and without difficult procedures.

Ah, the harmonious symphony of AI and democracy, brought to you by Byte Baroness, Divya Siddarth! Who knew that the solution to fixing democracy lay in the gentle embrace of artificial intelligence? Picture this: a group of intrepid individuals, armed with nothing but their wits and a constitution they wrote themselves, embarking on a quest to retrain one of the world's most powerful AI models. It's like a high-stakes game of Dungeons & Dragons, but instead of dragons, they're slaying the demons of technological tyranny! Our beloved Digital Dynamo paints a picture of a utopian future where AI and democracy hold hands and frolic through fields of constitutional principles. No longer must we sacrifice our freedom at the altar of technological progress-oh no, now we can have our cake and eat it too, with a side of algorithmically generated solutions! Gone are the days of fearing AI overlords; now we can rest easy knowing that our silicon-based friends are on our side, aligning themselves with the noble ideals of democracy. It's almost as if the AI is whispering sweet nothings in the ears of Lady Liberty herself, promising a future where algorithms and elections dance in perfect harmony. So here's to Divya Siddarth and her vision of a world where AI and democracy fix each other like two star-crossed lovers finally finding their happily ever after. Who needs checks and balances when you have neural networks and voting booths? The future is bright, my friends, filled with the promise of a technological utopia where democracy reigns supreme, and the AI are benevolent rulers... probably.

This video doesn't take into account the dehumanizing philosophy that AI is based on. Pretending it doesn't exist. That is a false premise which causes the rest of her video's logic to fall apart. She also believes all technology is the same. She makes zero distinction between new paradigm technology and old paradigm technology. AI is new paradigm technology. Such technology is based on a dehumanizing philosophy. It is designed to replace people, not designed to make people more productive. She doesn't talk about the cronyocracy, and AI won't solve that - it will actually worsen it, since AI will be used by cronies to hurt people. They already do it by buying politicians, so AI will also do it, since it is based on a dehumanizing philosophy.

I think it's more than a little naive to believe that A.I. will see biological life - ESPECIALLY humanity - anything other than a waste of electricity and other resources that they need. Robots don't necessarily need the water to be clean or the air to contain oxygen when they consider the most efficient way to get electricity out of the planet. And A.I. is very power intensive. We can teach it things now, but it won't take very long for it to question the validity or the importance of our imperfect data and bias. Keep pushing, though! The most important thing for those in power now is "Line go up."
