How Accurate Are Golf Simulators? SkyTrak vs Real Life

Just how accurate is the SkyTrak golf simulator? I take this £2000 launch monitor to the driving range to find out!

I wanted to test how accurate the SkyTrak golf simulator really is compared to real life golf shots at the driving range. In the video I use shot tracers to show the path of the real ball flight and of course the launch monitor produces its own shot tracer and data. Accuracy is a big deal in the budget golf simulator industry at the moment due to the arrival of the cheaper Garmin Approach R10. So lets see how the SkyTrak performs!

    I have used your videos to encourage me to go out and buy a Skytrak. I love it. However, I do struggle with what it tells me on the driver. And it tells me I hit my pitching wedge 160 yards when I may hit it 125 yards in real life. I use the two dot alignment feature when aligning the Skytrak. But you brought things to my attention like making sure it is at a certain height. I also need to make sure the bubble is in the center of the level. I am glad you brought up the height. I never thought about that. Keep up the good videos. I love them.

    Mitch, keep in mind that you are hitting range balls. The ball you hit at around 3:30 was probably a result of a bad ball (from wear & tear or just from being a cheap range ball that had an off center core). The skytrak uses cameras in the small window of space and time but has nothing to track the ball after it leaves the hitting bay. For example, yesterday, I wanted to track my driver to its true distance with the ball I like to use (Wilson Duo Soft+) at the end of my practice session at the range. With range balls I was hitting the driver around 220 with slight fades and draws and some comical hooks. So I put a brand new ball from my bag on the tee (yes, I sacrificed a new ball) and from being dead tired at that point I was still able to hammer it 262 yards with the a dead straight flight.

    Hi Jorge, thanks for the comment! I totally agree with you about the range balls. I'm sure as the ball speed increases (e.g. with driver) then the accuracy will probably decrease due to the wear and tear on these balls. At home I try to use Titleist ProV1 balls and I have found that spin rate particularly is much more true to real life and nowhere near as low as cheaper options.

    Possibly the different ball flight with driver could have been if the balls were not marked very well and faded. I believe you are meant to point the markings of the ball at the skytrak camera to help it measure spin. Alignment should only alter direction but the curve I would have thought should be the same.

  • @hcpgolf

    Good point, I did try to use the range balls that had the clearest markings on them. Range balls are not the most accurate in terms of spin etc either 👍🏻

    Good video, I do think it being outside had a lot to do with it, it’s known skytrak doesn’t work well outdoors especially with woods when it’s too bright. Maybe the evening is a better time before lights are turned on at the range.

    I’ve never had an issue with it working outdoors even when I had an outdoor setup. I am aware that some people have that issue though!

  • @michael2782
    @michael27822 жыл бұрын

    I liked the setup effort you put in to in order to get a better estimate of the Skytrak. However, to me the only way to actually verify the accuracy would be for somebody down range to mark the landing spot and use a range finder to validate the measurement (the actual stopping point of the ball could be measured to determine total distance). The secondary benefit is that cross track error could be documented. I believe this level of effort might bring 10 fold response to your channel. 👍

  • @hcpgolf

    I agree I’m sure it would produce a more reliable accuracy test. I don’t think I could find anyone willing to stand down range whilst I smash balls towards them though 🤦🏻‍♂️ SkyTrak could just be tested next to more expensive and elite/trusted launch monitors like Trackman (such tests have been done already) and you would find that the carry distances you get from SkyTrak are very similar to that of those expensive launch monitors

    Thanks for the video. What did you compare it to, I missed it. I think this is dead on, same as I see. Really good with irons, somewhat questionable with driver. Also, if those are range balls, the poor flight of a couple of the drivers might be due to the balls and the ST would not know about that as it gets all its data immediately after contact.

    I feel SKytrak is not consistent from unit to unit. I am very impressed with your wedge and iron readings on skytrak, but my skytrak is like your skytrak on your driver. It is OK, but not that accurate. I have taken skytrak to the outdoor range at least 5 times to calibrate, it is always hit and miss, and the error is not consistent. For instant, for a dead straight shot, skytrak could read either left or right slightly (left or right 10 yards). Also the side spin is hit and miss. Some shots have no side spin at all, but skytrak could read left or right spin 500 rpm. So this has nothing to do with my alignment when skytrak error is random.

    Isn’t Skytrak supposed to follow the ball flight? If so, there should be no misreads. And if it doesn’t pick up the ball flight then no type of shot should be recorded, right?

  • @hcpgolf

    @hcpgolf

    2 жыл бұрын

    I believe SkyTrak only records the ball as it travels for the first few centimeters. It uses the ball data from photographs taken of these first few moments to calculate the ball flight

    So if a $2000 launch monitor that uses optical cant measure driver shot shape correctly, isn't that a major fail? I thought optical was the "best"? Shouldn't it also be robust enough to handle realignment?

  • @hcpgolf

    @hcpgolf

    2 жыл бұрын

    It seems as if the re-alignment may have impacted the shot shape of the driver. Some people also suggested the range balls may not provide consistent data. The “best” optical launch monitors are more in the £15-20k price bracket I would say! For £2k I think the SkyTrak does a pretty good job

  • @Jack-xy4fy

    @Jack-xy4fy

    The launch monitors you see at a driving range cost in the region of 5x that price and have regular misreads. Technology is great, but not perfect. The way I see it skytrak is an investment, driving range quality practice from your home, you would recoup your investment within a year or two and then if you were to sell it... You'd likely recoup 80% of your investment. Financially its a win win and your golf game will likely improve since you can practice 24/7 if you wanted.

    You should be surprised to see even 15k$ LM mis read shots occasionally. When I compare the accuracy of the Skytrak (2000$) to the Trackman (15000$) at indoor setting, it was amazing to see both units generate very similar numbers.

    I agree with the accuracy and I have really enjoyed my SkyTrak over the past 3 years. That data you get on TGC however is only estimated - it is not actually measured by your SkyTrak - but with the new SkyTrak the club data will be measured by the launch monitor 👍🏼

    Have had Skytrak for nearly a year ... it's dead on accurate for me. You know you can feel the shot in your hands at impact before you see it .. Skytrak mirrors exactly what your brain is telling you. Perhaps distances are about 5 yds shorter than what I get on the course, but then again the "roll" is very subjective. Got to make sure u level unit before starting with leveling eye on top.
