How a Wahoo Rollr Got My Wife Back into Cycling (from a 2-year hiatus)

My wife is back into cycling after almost two years away from tyhe sport. But what has gotten her back into it? It's the new Wahoo Kickr Rollr, an indoor trainer that I originally set up for myself. However, after riding this a few times, I thought to myself "I think this trainer is better suited for Alice". So I set it up for her, and literally she has been on it almost every day for close to a month. So is this video we'll provide an overview of the Wahoo Rollr, and also why my wife is now hooked.

Thought it was a POS for $12k :D ....but I paid $1,000 for my Elite Suito, so $1,200 seems OK. Ease of setup is a winner, as long as you have a powermeter, and eliminates the need, or at least the tendency, to have an old bike permanently set up on the trainer somewhere.

I have a Decathlon road bike (Triban RC 120) bought in Chennai in 2020 costing an equivalent of $640 AUD. I wonder what is there in this Rollr, which would justify this cost!

After using the Kickr Rollr for one month, I'm a big fan. Ease of use, realistic road feel, quietness are its strengths. Personally, it also feels more comfortable than a conventional trainer, but that will vary between users. One reason for going to the Rollr instead of a typical smart trainer was reduced risk of cracking a carbon frame when riding out of the saddle at high power (have seen this happen to others). The setup and linking to Zwift was easy. No issues with rear tyre wear so far. On the topic of bouncing at higher power: it is a set of rollers, rollers are often used by track riders to improve their cadence, efficiency and smoothness. Typically if you are bouncing on rollers, it shows you need to work on pedalling technique.

Thanks for sharing on the thread Steven, and yes agreed. I think the only issue would be sprinting on Zwift or something like that. Then you would experience that bouncing effect. Outside of that, it shouldn't be an issue. Cheers, Cam

Mate, I've been thinking this for a while, and never quite knew how to approach it. Not wanting to tell you how to run your channel or expose your home life to the greater KZread populace etc... But I, and my wife, have really missed the family based element of what you'd offered. The funny, niggly rivalry that you and Alice share on and off the bike is what made the Friday series so much fun to watch. And to be fair, I'm really not into beards... 😉 Stoked to see she's dusted off the cleats and hoping she can stick at it again...for our enjoyment, and your own (in)sanity. Good stuff! 👌👌

Hi Cam, I'm curious about the trainer response delay you mentioned when in ERG mode at high power. I routinely use my bike (crank spider) power meter when on Zwift and never really noticed much of a difference in ERG mode whether using the bike power meter or the Kickr power meter. In my household, the Kickr roller makes a lot of sense since my bike has a 12-speed drivetrain with thru-axels and my wife's is an 11-speed with quick releases. So I'm looking to acquire a Kickr roller. Thanks for your timely review!!!

Switched off at twelve thousand dollars 😆 But seriously I've observed a lot of my friends over the years lose the love for cycling, they start zwifting more and more then less and less and they don't even bother with riding on the road hardly anymore, they end up lost to the sport, event numbers go down, less people riding on the roads and the case for bike lanes go down. It's all a bit sad really, but I still love riding outdoors, bought some rollers 5 years ago, only used them about 10 times, not once in the last 2 years.
