#Corvette #LS1 #Supercar
In the early 90s, The Corvette was facing it’s hardest trial yet.
But in its darkest hour,
A brave group of men
Picked up their wrenches, strapped on their gloves, and got to work in secret,
True believers in the cult of horsepower,
Proud members of the top speed club
These brave few toiled in the dark to save one of America’s greatest icons.
The Corvette.
This is THE SQUIDD, a channel devoted to telling boring stories BOLDLY. Automotive icons, car company calamities, supercar legends and underdog heroes. All told through the lens of The Squidd, automotive content creator famous for being a dude with bad hair.

The story of the vette really is tear jerking. I’m Australian and most wouldn’t know this. But our division of gm, holden, would have died without the c5. It was too expensive to design our own engines. The arrival of the ls1 and the c5 platform paved the way for 20 years worth of our performance cars.

Arrh,.. sez wot mate? The LS engines didn't come along to save the Commodore, they came along because GM HQ forced Holden to cancel the Aussie 5-litre, which was already a fully developed and significantly better engine then the SBC it replaced. And it wasn't a matter of cancelling the Aussie made V8 because the LS was better engineered, it was done so the Holden engine numbers could be added to the Chev production to bolster US production under the claims of 'keeping jobs in America', and so that the US unions could be placated. They were only able to get away with it, as the first step to closing Holden's local production, thanks to the efforts of PM's Hawke, Keating and Howard to erode the Australian Content Laws. For any arguement of the LS being better, I'd point to Larry Perkins refusing to run the LS in his racecars, and beating the factory Holdens with the Aussie 5.0. Supercars banned the 5.0 to force him to run the LS.

@@PiDsPagePrototypes Perkins is an odd fellow, considering that HSV, Skaife and Lowndes were able to consistently beat him at that time with the LS, it's a nice story but at the end of the day, Lowndes won multiple titles, Perkins Engineering didn't win any.

@PiDsPagePrototypes yes I see GMs reason, to justify this great motor we need to sell 100,000 extra to Australia. Better globally dont you think? We can modify LSs for cheap because Americans do? Mates building a 308. It's crimally expensive.

@@Heyitsallgoodman the Aussie production numbers are a pittance compared to the whole, but ask the United Auto Workers union to understand that, they're one on the groups that pushed to get the LS sent Down Under, and then campaigned against the US getting the Commidore/Monaro as it was GM but not their members production lines.

The thing to remember about the choice for the "Blue Flame" inline 6 in 53 was because Chevy did not have a V8 at the time. The legendary small block V8 would not be available for 2 more years. As soon as it was released in 1955 it was immediately stuck in the Corvette. Chevy was about the last of the GM brands to get a V8 as at the time Chevy was the bottom of the food chain within GM. Also the initial 53's were basically just a fancy body stuck on the current 53 Chevy passenger car frame and were pretty much that same frame through 1962.

This one was a banger! I was thinking, I would reccomend the story of the Porsche 917 next. I personally believe it is one of the best car stories in history! In case you aren't familiar, the entire car (which is one of the most dominant Le Mans cars ever) was designed in two months, and when the time for inspection rolled around, they only had one of the required 25 units built. So they stood 25 bodies of a 917 in a line and prayed the inspectors would only ask them to start unit #1, which was the only one with an engine in it. Then, when it got to a track the first time, the fan blew out of the engine, and the windshield wiper flew off too, but somehow this car became reality. Even the body of the car was utilized efficiently, the tubing of the frame was also the pipes for oil and fuel, to save weight. Then, the car went on to win... literally everything. Anyway, sorry for making you read that wall of text! I would love to see a video on the 917, I mean really love it, and I think it would do quite well. Hope your hand gets better, and thanks for the amazing videos!

Someone has red "All Corvettes are Red". Good stuff. For those that dont know, All Corvettes are Red was written by a journalist who had full access to the Corvette program during the 90's and documented the entire creation of the C5, from conceptualization to production. It's really fascinating and I highly recommend giving it a read if you're a fan of Corvettes or just cars in general. Ive owned 2 C5 Corvettes so far and am looking for a 3rd. They are incredible machines.

I think the empathy comes from our respect of what it took to make the machines. Like a painting is a reflection of the artist, the car is a reflection of the hard working people that designed and built it. that's what we try to connect here, the humans behind the machines.

Watching C5 and C6.R at VIR made me a fan. And seeing the CTS-V dominate at VIR and Mid-OH renewed my interest in GM. But, the debut of the C7.R at Daytona was historic. The C7.R in that yellow & black stood out above the field of Ferraris, Porsches, Aston’s and Audis. And if my memory serves me correctly, there was also a duo of Camaros on the track. The only other car more impressive and interesting than the C7.R that day was the Delta Wing…. Long live Corvette Racing 🏁!!!

It's funny how history repeats itself. Chevy was again in a tough situation as the C6 was ending its run, and despite both public and private desires for a mid-engined Corvette, everyone involved in the C7's development was told they'd be shown the door if any engineering money was spent on anything other than a front-engine C7. C7 came, did awesome, and the C8 project began, but lo and behold, much of the engineering considerations done for the C7 somehow heavily paved the way for a mid-engine C8 to happen. Gotta love how devoted and devious the folks who bring the Corvette to life are!

Fast forward to the 2023 Le Mans, swap out the letters and numbers (from C6.R to ZL1), keep the manufacturer the same, and the sentiment still growls true! God Bless America! I never saw many as a kid in germany, but whenever i saw one it almost blew out my eardrums with that sweet sweet screaming V8. If i could buy any car, to drive every day, it would probably be a corvette c6 wrapped like the one from need for speed most wanted 😂 that was my childhood, and it was always one of my dream cars.
