How A Simple Quick Fix Turned Into Complete Disaster! Mechanic Special

As usual I never get the full story when I buy these rigs so I have to do reinvent what happen to all the Jeeps I purchase. Of course this one just quit running so it should be a simple fix right?? Well it turns into a pretty good story drawing the clues out of what's wrong and what happened to this Jeep. Worst case of SLOPPY Mechanic that I have seen in a while. Hope you enjoy!!

The 4.0L is very easy just take your time, label everything keep everything in the order they came out! Use torque specs for main bearing caps, rod caps, head bolts, oil pump bolts, and the bolt for the camshaft sprocket and you’ll be good buddy!! These things are great to learn on!

Love to see a ZJ getting attention. I’ve had 10-12 over the years having two now with a 4.0 and one 5.9. Of all the ones over the years I had one run hot with 4.0 that had Stuck thermostat. The ex wife ram it so hot it stopped then wen it cooled enough to start drove it till it stopped again. I changed the thermostat got her a new car then I drove it another 4-5 years. I’m usually not that lucky. Nice videos buddy now show me a 5.9 ZJ with 249 case swapped to a 231 or 242 so I can see what’s involved in the input shaft matching the 46RE transmission. I hate the AWD can’t do burnouts like I wanna! MOPAR2YA KIDD

The rod bering might look that way because of the block bering journals were rough when it was assembled. The black marks on the bering tells me the block dident have a good bearing journal grind when it was assembled and therefore, oil worked its way into that aera and became blackend which is an indacator that it was a bad grind from the factory. Good job.🤔👍

That is definitely a hack, I haven't seen you go there. So stop thinking your a hack. I like your idea to put a plate and jb weld, cast iron can be welded with nickel. I've had it done. So... I'd say, disassemble the whole thing and find a welder that can weld cast iron. Then actuality rebuild the motor. It will probably be decent. I'd use it if it was done right. The torque converter is trash. , set it aside for a core charge. Cool video Dex.

you can make a mild steel patch and stick weld with cast iron welding rod...you can pre-heat the area before welding and just weld a small amount at a time not letting any area get to hot

Dex, did that ZJ come from Savannah GA area. If so it might have been "done" by the same grandfather and the teenager grandson that "worked on " I got a XJ from years ago. 😮 when I pulled the oil pan it actually had gravel in it. Anything they had touched was scrap metal.

Just got ahold of a 99 ram they’d lost the two big bolts on the bottom to the trans those 7/16ths you showed there the ones that go in from motor side threaded into the trans wound up busting the bell housing on the the nv3500 so they welded it back up put it back in again missing those same bolts lol then sold it when it busted again I brought a spare trans with me limped it home missing those bolts then had to pull the trans out again because my Dakota nv3500 has the shifter about 2” back from where it is on a ram I switched the rear case with the Dakota bell and been running it also slapped those damn bolts in it

Can you tell me does the ZJ have the body ground strap on the back drivers headbolt? If so where does it connect to the body? My 97 has a broken ring terminal and about an 1/8th inch of the braided cable. I bought a new one to replace it but can't find where it would connect to the body. Starting to wonder if the engine was swapped from a XJ which does have the ground strap but the ZJ doesn't and maybe the cable was cut off during the swap.
