How A. Lange & Söhne Became One of the Best in the Business | WatchBox Talks

WatchBox teamed up with Alp Sever of Langepedia to discuss German watchmaking giant A. Lange & Söhne. Sever is joined by Elizabeth Doerr of Quill & Pad, collector Michael Hickcox, and WatchBox’s own Mike Manjos. Together they examine the history of A. Lange & Söhne and its extraordinary rebirth in the 1990s. They explore the brand’s most prestigious models including the Lange 1, Datograph, and Zeitwerk. The group further considers the horological contributions of A. Lange & Söhne and how they’ve elevated watchmaking worldwide.

My Lange Grand Langematik compared to my Patek Calarava is no comparison, the Lange is just breath taking to look at, finishings are just on another level, my grail watch and the zero reset just incredible

Great discussion! I really enjoyed seeing Alp Sever, the man behind Langepedia. And up until this point I'd only read articles by Elizabeth Doerr, or interviews in print, but hearing her speak about watches is a revelation. She's got incredible institutional knowledge from her decades in the business. Kudos to all!

I got my first Lange at an AD recently. Unfortunately the brand has succumbed to the same issue as all the other hype brands - lack of availability. I took a passing interest into the steel Odysseus, and as of now (early 2022) they're not available at ADs - they are boutique exclusives - and you can't even get on a reservation list unless you've purchased TWO prior Langes! I understand the business decision of first taking care of your existing customers, but it creates a barrier to entry for newer customers.

No way around this in a era of high demand except to increase supply which comes with its own risks for the company. The problem Lange finds itself in its not of its own making but of changing market trends... still, congrats on your first Lange... you have one more than most of us!

You can get an Odysseus with just one purchase. Its only 2 if you buy simpler complications. What do you expect when they only make around 350 Odysseus watches per year

@@JA-oi4vj I’m not saying no one buys them but feels like lots of people say they want a Lange then when they have the money they buy a Patek or a day date. They obviously have customers but there is also a reason they do not have the outrageous waitlists despite the constant hype on their quality.

@@Joebo31 I’m glad that’s the case and hope it stays like that. I prefer it being the connoisseur choice, rather than for the man that chooses between a rolex day date or patek when he’s got some money

@@Joebo31 Maybe that was true a few years ago. Lange has been ¨found¨ by new collectors as well, during the pandemic which explains the rise in resale values of their rare and limited edition pieces. Lange has always been coveted by collectors, it produces 1/10th of the watches that Patek does. It's one of those brands, if you know u know. Lange aficionados are a different breed than the hype collectors.

My wish for Lange: 1. Control production thereby increasing resale values on all lines 2. More publicity leading to an increase in resale value. 3. Never, ever produce "affordable" lower end watches for the masses. Stay exclusive and aspirational. Mike, miss your show on Saturdays. Please restart the show. It was very informative and useful. Thanks! Lange is the best watch maker period.
