How 1 Man’s Brain Injury Turned Him Into A Math Savant

Jason Padgett grew up struggling in school - until one night in 2002 when he was attacked in a bar and everything changed. Padgett said after the incident, he was using areas of the brain he didn’t previously have access to; he experienced choppy vision, was drawing intricate shapes and was seeing complex mathematical objects everywhere. Dr. Darold Treffert, a world renowned expert on savants, later diagnosed Padgett with acquired savant syndrome, which explained Padgett’s new skills. Padgett joins Megyn Kelly TODAY to share his story.

My dad did nothing but work. He couldn't read, he had no hobbies, he thought games, sports, art, movie going and reading were distractions and unnecessary. He just worked, went home, took a shower, ate one meal a day at home. I knew nothing about him. He had a stroke. A stroke damages the brain, and while trying to recover other parts of the brain may wake up. All of a sudden my dad decided he wanted to paint. He had my mother drive him to an art store. He came out with an easel, high end paints, brushes, canvas and charcoal. Look, he once took me out to a dept. store, gave me $22. and said "buy a whole new wardrobe, your clothes are awful". He did not spend money. And here he was buying something he thought was frivilous. And he started painting. Stuff from looking out window, stuff from dreams. He never even doodled before. Now we had these really nice oil paintings - like pro quality, unbelievable. He never had an attention span and now he saw below the surface. He also used to be cruel and loved to berate us in front of others. And that stopped. It was like he had a stroke and instead of recovering his old stuff, he came back a way more interesting, and apparently had a gift he never had any interest in and thought was a "frivilous hobby".

After my Mom had her stroke (she ended up in a wheelchair as her left side was paralyzed) she became funnier, and nicer. She was always funny, but before the stroke she could be mean...and being around her at times was like walking on eggshells. I always said that when she had her stroke the mean side of her died and the best part of her came alive. We lost her 7 years ago and I miss her so much!

Ikr. They always do that on these shows esp. where the audience is in the round and the camera shows people in the background all the time. I am sure there would be people doing that anyway, because I am naturally like that-very expressive with emotions, but it would not be everyday, I don't think. It can be annoying.

Just take LSD. Look at your body as a computer. It has several components to process vision "eyes", hearing "ears", etc. Your brain processes all these things using mathematics (it's like the CPU). And just like a computer, the only thing you can understand is what you see on the screen (your conscious thoughts). That's why people say that you're only using something like 10% of your brain. When he got hit in the back of his head, it seems as though he got access to more of his brain then he had originally. Now when he looks at objects, he sees his brain processing the mathematics of the things around him. When you take LSD, you get access to more regions of your brain, and a lot of people in silicon valley have already figured this out. Microdosing is getting very popular across the country. Just some food for thought :)

Have you found that having a photographic memory is boring when it comes to watching movies and reading books? I've found it is because you've seen it, you remember it, you don't forget it, but it's really great. When you have to take a test, you need to remember something friends think it's really weird, because you can tell them exactly what they were wearing or what they were doing, etc, or what their desk looks like. And where they are report is that they need for the meeting if you were over there.

I was a "Maths genius" until I was 15 ... then I had a "stroke" (or maybe it was epilepsy?) and the focus of my intellect became language. I literally lost interest in maths and began "seeing" the complexity of human language communication. What seems to have happened was a switch from what they call left-brain logical thinking to right-brain thinking. Prior to this I very seldom spoke and had difficulty understanding written and spoken language. Immediately after I'd recovered from the physical effects of the stroke/epilepsy (which lasted for about 15 minutes) I found myself experiencing a "world of meaning" when I read or listened to speech that I'd never experienced before. My experience of music and the human voice also changed.

@Brayan Carmona we could theoretically achieve teleportation through quantum teleportation using the theory of entanglement. In fact we already did achieve this by teleporting data. However, the issue with this in order to teleport something we have to replicate its particles which in turn destroys the original particles. There’s a risk that if you teleport a person they may not be actually the same.

My god this is absolutely fascinating, it is as if (considering you see the brain as a computer) he had access to 'lower level' parts of his brain processing the usual movement, visualization etc... This would mean, our brain ALREADY HAS tons of mathematical capabilities that we shouldn't have access to and that we 'learn a second time' at school. According to what he says, he actually sometimes needs to think about a concept to understand it. But his thought process is more like: "now what does it mean for the universe ? How does the universe does that ?" And this makes sense, our brains evolved and got more complicated thanks to (or because of) our environment, therefore, our 'deep' thought processes are completely related to that same environment (concrete stuff and not abstract stuff). For instance: "what does F=GMm/r² mean ? Oh yeah ! it's the force that pushes me against the floor !" or "what is -1/2gt²+v0.cos(a) ? oh yeah ! it's the curve a ball draws in the sky when I launch it !" I WANT to search more about that, this is more than a gift, it's like the ultimate way to do math (aka use what our brains are already doing in the background).

There's a code to life in fractals and I think conscience has something to do with Claustrum's actions. But these are complex topics which have complex numbers and I don't yet understand and doubt I'll ever truly will. So if you want to chat we could do it over Telegram or whatever you're comfortable with. Fyi, from Finland had this "awakening" and ideas of these concepts before I even researched them. It's honestly scary and I feel borderline crazy, but I'm constantly mind blown about all these similarities and coincidences that I keep finding.

The gift is that most humans don’t have to think about these things while they perform them. It’s sad to realize that his brain is glitching in a sense forcing him to calculate the most mundane things in this world. Both a blessing and a curse.

So, his story is absolutely fascinating and shows us how little we understand about neuroscience. But the other thing that sticks out to me in this story is that this brain-injured guy couldn't get an MRI in the United States because he didn't have insurance. He had to fly around the globe to get medical treatment for free. What a country.

Here's my personal testimony I got my skull broken in half like an egg, 18 years ago in a motorcycle accident after I healed it took me seven years to learn how to do math again and then one day I met Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and I put my hand on his shoulder and said thank you mr. Plant for four Decades of everything and I walked away from him and became one of the best harmonica players in Northern Colorado and I think that came from my brain injury in my motorcycle accident and Robert Plant encouragement of course

The "framing" he is describing is known medically as "visual trails." You can get them as a side effect of taking some medications. I got them once after taking Klonopin (Clonazepam) for insomnia. It didn't help my math though. My physician took me off of it because of the visual trails and other side effect. I had to "taper" it off to keep from suffering benzodiazepine withdrawal. Took forever.

Regarding Jason's comments on the complexity of calculation behind catching a ball, I have always thought about Michael Jordan in this way. Michael standing at the top of the circle and contemplating a drive or a shot (or, last resort, pass to a teammate )...at least three defensive player in motion with the potential of interfering with a drive to the basket and layup, layin, dunk, etc. I have realized the Michael is doing a mass of calculations of how fast things can happen, at what angles, what was the vertical and horizontal reach of all the defenders, how high could they jump, etc. I don't think all the computer power in the world could work out all the possibilities in advance; Michael had to recognize his best (or a good) possibility to score and put it into motion. As he did so, defenders were actually moving in ways he could not possibly have worked out with precision and he is having to make many fresh computations on-the-fly as he adjusts his move or, perhaps, aborts it. Bottom line, what I always said about this situation was that if his brain were a conventional computer, the lights would go dim all over Chicago to meet the demands of these calculations. (I'm not joking. Maybe trying to be a little bit cute, but I do think that the way he evaluated his situation required immense, ulta high speed calculating power. Michael is the king but we all have some of this and some of us have a lot of it, something we do so naturally that we don't even perceive what is really going on.)
