HOUSE WOLF - THE SHOW SIBERIAN HUSKY DOG - Destructive or Calm Pet?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today I compare the beautiful show line Siberian Husky with his working line counterpart and reveal the answers to these questions?
1) Is the show husky calmer?
2) Is he less destructive?
3) Is he more trainable?
4) Can he work as well as the working line husky?
5) Is he a wolfdog?
Kal-El, my new agouti husky from Russia will help me answer these questions after he has lived with me for 6 months. I have also raced with huskies in the UK and Norway. As you know huskies can be extremely difficult pets, so to see if the show line huskies are easier, will be an interesting episode.

I have a husky/wolf hybrid. He wound up abandoned twice and in the same shelter by the time he was slightly over one. I don't guess the shelter were aware of his heritage because it is their policy not to adopt out wolves. I found out when I got his DNA. My Loki is my best friend ever. Silly boy freaked when he saw a mouse, ran in front of me and gaurded me. He loves me as I love him. An ex boyfriend stalked me and got in my house. Loki knew him and actually liked him so he must not have thought that my boy would react. That asshole, creep hit me. My Loki grabbed him by the arm and gave him 17 stitches. Said he was getting my boy taken but I took pics of my bruise and a black eye. My boy is my protector and I am his.

The one thing you left out is the vocalization of the Siberian Husky. Our female is constantly talking to us and more so to my wife. They have conversations everyday. Sometimes I can't help but to laugh when they get to talking. Our Jasmine likes her walks, but she will not walk next to us on the leash. She walks in front keeping a tight leash, but not pulling us hard. At least until she spots a squirrel or a cat. She is highly intelligent. She knows words and can differentiate the names of her toys to know which toy you want her to bring. She also has a sense of time. I am on a special eating plan that requires that I eat every 2.5 hours and she comes to remind me right on time. If I ignore her she will will go tell my wife. She has never destroyed anything in the house. She lets us know when she wants to go to her crate to sleep every evening. She makes a great companion.

I own both a working/show cross and two show line huskies. They both have an aptitude to pull, however there is a difference in drive and endurance. I am a recreational musher and like to go out either sledding/dryland mushing depending on weather. It seems like my show line huskies run out of steam quicker while my working female could just keep going. I will say that regardless of background, they do need mental stimulation. They are a smart, mischievous breed. Without structure and training, they can and will be destructive. I have found that all of my huskies have been highly trainable. Its all about having fun and not making it seem like it’s work. As far as temperament goes, they’re all amazing. They have very quirky and unique personalities. We do sled dog demos where I live, and they love people and vice versa. Honestly, they are a fantastic breed but are not for everyone. It’s a pleasure to own them and they are definitely my heart breed.

I couldn't agree with you more on all counts .....I have 2 pedigrees, 1 is show line from a breeder & 1 working line from rescue i took about 18 months after the first one. I do canicross running with both. My "working female " would run forever, my "Show" male runs as far as he feels is necessary hahah but hes the one that gets really excited when I get the running harnesses & gear out. Yes they definitely have very different personalities, but not sure if that is a male/female husky thing or working vs show line . Definitely not a dog for beginners & plenty of research before getting one is a must, I'm pleased the breeder made us wait 2 years with many visits to her kennels to learn everything about the breed from diet exercise, grooming etc to be sure it was the right dog for us, also shows she is in it for the breed not to get quick $$$ in her pocket . but I'd never change my decision to have one

I'm single and so I have to walk them by myself. Walking them together is like trying to wrestle a bear. It is like having a pair of three year old children, each with the strength of an adult person. It is a lot of work sometimes, but they are amazing dogs. They are insanely affectionate and cuddly with each other and with me. They are also incredibly playful and fun. They have huge personalities and they are quite talkative. If Kal El is anything like my Navajo, the prey drive will dwindle. Navajo still gets excited over meeting new people, but he leaves small animals alone. I can also leave him off leash around my house, but he will introduce himself if anyone else is walking by. When he sees someone he knows, he often goes into prone position and lays down, like he's gonna pounce on them like a cat does. It's pretty funny to watch because all he ends up doing is get excited and occasionally nips their chin when he's jumping for joy.

As I see Kal in the video I can say that the only difference between him and the working line huskies is in the looks and the temperament. He is simply an easygoing dog but I'm sure he works the same as the working line huskies. What people say about huskies being untrainable, that is just an urban legend. I've had huskies and German shepherds since my early childhood and I can say that huskies can be trained just like the German shepherds. I've trained them together when I was a teenager. Probably having the German shepherd alongside made it easier for the Husky. And I used to take them out off leash, never did the Husky run away, she'd always come back at my whistle. Never got more than 5-600 meters away from me.

Huskies need a bit more negotiation in training than a lot of people are used to. People expect dogs to automatically listen to them and want to please their owners. Huskies are not like that; they are highly independent. Training a husky is a lot of negotiation, you need to *convince* a husky to listen to your orders, they won't automatically do so.

Huskies are really a one-of-a-kind breed. It's more like you become part of its pack instead of him becoming part of your family. It makes a lot of sense to me. We rescued a red Siberian husky from a shelter. As a first time husky owner, we were prepared to see how much furniture or anything from our house she would chew. We make sure to walk her twice a day. Our husky never bothered with anything around house except the toys we give her. She has long super soft fur and very pretty. I thought she had puppy fur and will grow out eventually but she didn't. I was guessing she was a mix with something else as she is different from any husky we've seen. I now understand there is a show line husky and our husky is definitely a show line kind. We're blessed to have her and she is very friendly and sweet to anyone she meets. She is exactly like Kal-El, pulls only when she sees squalls, very gentle with eating off from our hands, very calm and sweet. She is a giant cat, she naps all day and has very soft cat fur and follow us everywhere in the house. I should try to train her more. We have her for a year now and she just turned two years old. Thank you for your video.

I wish more people would watch videos like this on dog breeds before getting one just because they like the way they look. I know I don’t have a lot of free time, don’t have a big yard and don’t have near as much as an active lifestyle anymore. So for the last 13 years or so I’ve been sticking with the bully breeds. My current dog is a pocket American Bully. Got him a few years ago when my older XL type bully was getting older. The older one ended up getting cancer and I had to make the tough decision to put him down before he started to suffer a lot. My current dog got to know the old big guy for about 5 months and had become attached to him. So it took him a couple months to get used to not having him around. But for my current lifestyle he is perfect. If I sleep in he will stay in bed with me as long as I do. When I’m gone he sticks to his toys and doesn’t mess up anything. He can be as chill as I need him to be or play as long as I want him to play. He loves the outdoors and running around but is content chilling and watching a movie with me on the couch. And as far as he’s concerned he has no enemies lol. Doesn’t matter if he’s never met you before he your new best friend. He can look a little intimidating to people that don’t know the breed because he looks like a short pit bull on steroids. But as soon as he makes eye contact with you and wags his tail with his natural smile he always wins everyone over. If you’re getting a dog make sure you match the breed to your lifestyle and be honest with yourself about what you can really handle.

9:26. Pure Joy on his face. They are very trainable, my 98 lb. Working husky will be in harness, come within 3 feet of a squirrel on the side of the trail, and not flinch. All I have to say is “leave it”, and it’s eyes forward, he doesn’t break stride. It takes consistency and positive reinforcement, with raw meat rewards. Affection and kindness, and having him with me almost constantly, has formed a trusting, unbreakable bond.

I was a bit skeptical when i first saw the title but wow you did an amazing job explaining the husky. the difference is not big between them but i fully agree. i’ve been an Husky owner for 12 years (today we have 7 and a kennel) and husky lover for over 20 years, reading everything i could. The struggle with them, the changing everything you thought you knew. Having a husky as a teacher is a true gift. But i would like you to do a update video of him when he is 5 years and telling us what that has been like since this video. Because i am sure you will learn a bit more as he grows up completely and also if you get another husky, or two more, what it is like to have multiple huskies. What i did find out after getting our forth and fifth and 7th huskies, when i got a true pack is much more understanding for the working husky owners, that is thouse who have atleast 6 huskies. They are listening even more on each other and less on you. They will get more like the working huskies as you describe. Still more mellow indoors but i do understand why they live in kennels outside. although i want mine to have the choice. excellent choice of breeder, her dogs is amazing ! i hope to one day be able to have one from them too.

A dog walking belt free's your hands & transfers the pulling to your back. I highly recommend a dog walking belt. Kal El is truly gorgeous. My Red Husky Murphey (42 pounds) & her daughter Maya (64 pounds) did the Husky zoomies daily. Murphey was faster, while Maya was much more powerful. We live in a beach town in Southern California. We live right up against Camp Pendleton where it gets quite hilly. Running up the steep hills is actually easier than running down them. Every jogging step I take going down hill I need to put on the brakes with my knees taking all the resistance. At 61 it's getting more difficult. But it's only Huskies for me. I'm happily hooked. To help you with the pulling, you need to adapt the harness you have with a hookup on the front. This works miraculously because when the dog pulls, it will turn the dog around to face you stopping the pulling. There are harnesses that have hookups on the back and on the front. To save yourself from a fall, it is worth it for you to look into this solution. Some dog trainers do not like harnesses at all because it encourages pulling, but just putting the hookup on the front will stop the pulling very quickly. I learned this from experience after falling with a face plant in the ground. A big wake up call. I really encourage that checking this out will be a great help to you with your powerful pulling dogs.

I always wanted a husky, but I ended up with 2 Samoyeds, which are high energy, and need daily hikes and runs, but manageable in the house... unless left alone, lol. I then discovered the Yakutian Laika thanks to your channel. My boy Talan is now a year old, and was an easy puppy to raise. Very wanting to please, although a wild streak. He is more 'wolfish' than my Samoyeds, in that he is very skittish, and has those long wolfy feet and legs. He also had some resource guarding, even as a little puppy. I had to train him with that, and very pleased that he is so good with that now. He wants to please more than my Samoyeds, who are darlings, but more about doing what they want to do before want I want. But can be coaxed with a patience, lol. They get along great, and are very friendly. I love your videos, and have been a long time fan, so looking forward to more of them with your new huskies.

Congratulations Anneke, this is the most beautiful husky i have ever seen! Yes i knew there is a working line and a show line. I think many people do not know, get a working line husky because of it's looks and then end up with a dog who is bored and will go for descruction. I see it, they just walk them a bit. They are born to run! Please run your husky. A garden, no matter how big is NOT enough.

A few years ago I adopted my husky at 7 years old (she’s 11 now) and I would taker her everyday to a little community park around my area where a lot of people would get together with their dogs and just converse. I remember there was this guy that had two very big huskies and he would always make these comments as if he was trying to make me recognize that my husky wasn’t actually a husky. “She has to be mixed with something cause she’s to small”, “yeah she’s mixed cause her eyes aren’t blue”, “she’s probably mixed with a Shiba”. I always ignored him. However one day this lady that was passing by came up to us and said “what a beautiful husky” I said thank you and she preceded to inspect her a little more and she asked if I was planing on breeding her? I said no, to which she replied “you know a lot of people would pay a lot of money to own a show husky?” I was like wUh? And she in that moment while that guy was there! Proceeded to tell us that my husky was actually the type of husky that is used for FREAKING DOG SHOWS! I have no idea who she was but she was reeeeeeeally trying to convince me to breed my girl cause she really wanted one of her puppies. That guy got so butt hurt and so embarrassed he started going to the park when I would normally leave. That was so awesome and this video just confirms everything that lady said was true! Hell yeah!

I love the working huskies. They are great fun and in my opinion more beautiful than the showline one you’re showing here. They are trainable but you have to have the right approach like that trainer said. If you’ve got a good relationship with them and they respect you they will listen.

Really cool to see you take the time to understand the breed. My family had adopted a Belgium malinois. I really didn't fall in love with him till i started looking at his previous training and realized how incredibly smart he was. He passed away January 2021 but i still miss him every day.

Wow, he is amazing! I was blown away how obedient he seems to be and truth to be told a little jealous. My white Swiss shepherd is very well behaved but sometimes I basically have to beg her to do some tricks. On other days she’ll just look at me like “yeah, no. That’s dumb, I’m not doing that” 😂

Thanks for a great video! My Swedish show husky is very much like Kal Al, very trainable, do a lot of tricks and we train competitive obedience, she loves toys and treats. She is extremely prey driven and has a tendency to pull on the leash but due to training she walks ok. It’s great to walk with a belt with her in front, she doesn’t stop and sniff - she just wants to move. Not really destructive, my retrievers destroyed more in the house than she has!

I had a small female with blue eyes and a black bandit mask. She was very playful. I later had a mix of GSD, Siberian Husky and some Wolf. She was amazing with qualities of all three but her coat looked blonde and she had blue eyes. She pulled a lot and had a strong prey drive with the protective instincts of a GSD.

I'm not sure if my boy is show line or working but we rescued him about a year and a half ago. He's pretty mellow inside for the most part but outside he's got more energy than any other dog I've ever seen. I used to have a great Pyrenees and my Siberian pulls harder than he did despite being half the weight

I’ve had 2 husky’s, both were just as gooofy as this boy and pulled hard enough to dislocate my dads elbow and pull me on my skateboard for miles. They are extremely intelligent and Learned all the basic commands when they were puppy’s and even howled “I love you” when yummys were involved. This made me miss them quite a bit. Wonderful Video and I hope you and your dog 🐶 stay happy and healthy.

I have a red show Husky. I very much agree with your appraisal. He is very chilled, and I have been fortunate enough to be with him constantly for the last 5 years. I find that his happiness centres around being able to be with his human. If he doesn't have me or another person to keep him company, he can become very upset. His exercise needs are not so great, although we walk 3 times a day and we do weekly adventures to national trust locations. I would say that he is the most intelligent dog I have ever had, but whether he listens to me has always been based on the strength of our bond. He trusts me and cares for me, so he listens to what I say, even in cases where he has a competing interest. This is a big difference from other breeds. I have never felt like I am training my show Husky. I have always felt like I am teaching him, and we are bonding. It's a subtle but important difference. If people don't have the home life to be able to center their world around their dog, I don't think they should consider a show Husky, but if they do, and can make an arrangement to never leave the dog alone, then show Huskies are wonderful partners. A recommendation re pulling: use a collar, not a harness. There is a lot of myth around this subject but the simple mechanics are that if you control the neck, you control the body. My boy doesn't pull if he is on a collar, and he can feel my input more easily. However, if using a collar, one must be careful to predict any bouts of pulling to protect the dogs neck.

WOW! I didn't know there were two different types. The show Husky looks very beautiful, but I'm more familiar with the skinnier working Husky that you see sometimes in households as watchdogs with the weird cool blue or grey eyes. I had a chance to see sled dogs when I visited Alaska. They were very different in stature and looked nothing like what I expected. Nothing really Husky in appearance at all.

Most of the sled dogs you saw in alaska were probably alaskan huskies rather than siberian husky. Alaskan huskies can look like the siberian, but mostly they look very different as they are mixes, but is recognised as it's own breed in the us ~

@@umineko3573 Yeah, they were more streamlined. Mixed breeds. They were kept to be used for tourist sledding. Like pulling carts. They were so exciting and ready to go. No I can see why they need the type of exercise that will give them a challenge.
