House On Haunted Hill: Does It Stand The Test Of Time?

Фильм және анимация

From one 1999 horror remake to another. After re-watching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. The original was from a far less dark castle in Schlock and Gimmick Purveyor William Castle, and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror, or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever. Close the shutters, and let’s see if this movie stands the Test of Time!

I think that the difference between this film and The Haunting remake (aside from the fact that this film had a far less impressive OG to live up to) is that this film embraced it's cheesiness and ended up being creepy and scary as well, while The Haunting tried to be creepy and scary and just came off as unintentionally cheesy. And - oh my yes - the score by Don Davis! Classic horror perfection! This was a fun one, and I'm long overdue for a re-watch...

I enjoyed your review and I agree. I loved this movie when it first came out and saw it in the theater, and I still enjoy it. Geoffry Rush is so great in it, and I like the rest of the cast. The music is ominous and creepy. The opening title sequence is so vivid and it's hard to describe how fresh and creepy and startling it was when I saw it the first time. Same thing with the effects, they may not completely work now, but they were SO scary and astonishing when I first saw the move. I re-watch the movie, maybe once a year, and I enjoy it every time.

I love this film, because I genuinely feel like I have never seen "insane ghosts" done as well as they did in that film. The finding of the camcorder with the blood streak going up the wall into the ceiling, the sped up, awkward motion of the Dr stalking the halls, the guard who had his entire head scooped out, the sets with the creepy preserved horse and RIDER. The rot seeping out from the door as the hauntings get worse..... The only reason I don't recommend it to people is because honestly the final scene is APPALLING. Absolutely stupid CGI shadow, the plot reveal completely undermines the horror, and that stupid last line about being adopted.

I thought the Darkness was really cool, and it chasing Price up the stairs was a great scene. Didn’t really like Melissa being found chopped up. (Kind of undermines the mystery of her disappearance and the creepy blood disappearing into the ceiling scene, which REALLY creeped me out as a child.) The climax and end was the only part I wasn’t scared of as a child in the theatre. I thought it was really cool.

I remember the hype behind this movie being pretty intense. It was the early days of remakes so the concept was fresh and exciting. The trailer was convincing, highlighting the state of the art special effects of its time and promising a more intense and horrific ghost story than The Haunting. I know my circle of 18-19 year old friends were sold by it and went to see it opening night. It was fun. It delivered some genuinely creepy sequences balanced with some classic horror camp. Now I have to admit, I thought the CGI was a bit much and took me out of the film several times, but I still enjoyed it. I haven't watched it in ages I might have to revisit it soon.

I saw this movie when I was maybe 11. I wish there was a bit more focus on the tortured souls who still haunt the building. There could’ve been a couple more creepy paranormal patient/ghost scenes and maybe another “death by ghost” before the darkness appears but it’s still a fun scary movie. It’s got great atmosphere, the asylum set is fantastically designed and creepy, and Geoffrey Rush is brilliant. Chris Katten’s parts are even enjoyable.

Just saw it recently and had a lot of fun with it. Effects with CGI might not have aged the best and maybe those picky about the editing might be annoyed but the overall atmosphere, creepy visuals such as the images when Stephen Price goes mad in the chamber are very effective and a solid cast lead by Geoffrey Rush along with Famke Janssen make it a great watch when in the mood for a good haunted house style movie. Can’t forget Marilyn Manson’s Sweet Dreams cover which 25 years later still sounds great

This movie is not "far more watchable" than the original. Sorry. I prefer the 1959 cult film anyday. JoBlo has practically said this twice or three times now in different videos and it's starting to seem like they just have a grudge against the original for some odd reason. Sorry guys, but I'm not impressed by some cgi ghost thing or Geoffrey Rush trying to do a Vincent Price impression. This is a Haunted House movie that fits much better in the 1950's where it was already meant to be a comedic take on the Old Dark House genre. Yes, the original is cheesy but so is this one. It worked better the first time. Just my opinion.

The channel seems to want to get across that this is a far superior version, It's like they have a grudge against Vincent Price for some odd reason. This is the third video they've implied in videos how much better this is, now calling it "far more watchable." It's a Haunted House movie, and was always meant to be darkly comedic. The original 1959 one captured that much better, in my opinion. No it doesn't stand the test of time, just watch it like nothing from Dark Castle is good, 13 Ghosts, trash, Ghost Ship after the first scene is trash, HoHH is trash, fun isn't a description of a movie, tht doesn't mean they're good, it means u enjoy them, why do all these channels can't grasp tht, just cuz u like it doesn't make it good, yall just review these trash movies and try to say hey this is fun and it's old so it has to be good like shut up

The Haunting may have the better CGI but Haunted Hill has more blood and sh(L)ock value. 🩸👻
