Kermode's take on Leto's performance is actually a perfect encapsulation of Leto's who career. He munches through the scenery in everything he's in, trying too hard and in an utterly thoughtless way that is frequently careless of the overall tone of the scene or the film, and of the fact that when you're acting alongside other people you are part of a team. Leto is the ultimate "look at me" actor.

I liked him in American Psycho when he got chopped up by a wood axe. And I liked him in Fight Club when he got brutally beaten. Aside from that he ruins every movie he's in.

I liked him in Requiem For a Dream too. Back around that Fight Club/American Psycho period he was a pretty effective, even talented character actor. Even as late as Mr. Nobody (a film I dislike) this seemed to be the case. Then he did Dallas Buyer's Club and got the Oscar for doing the typical actor's thing of overtly losing lots of weight and 'transforming' for the role. After that point he went down the path of heavy make-up, odd voices, strange mannerisms etc. I honestly think his performance in Blade Runner 2049 is embarrassing. His performance in this is very, very strange too. Like, I wouldn't know it was him if I hadn't been told, but this character is clearly a younger man in heavy make-up doing a dodgy Italian accent.

It's weird. Leto is clearly delivering a better performance than Lady Gaga, but it's a good performance as a one-dimensional Italian stereotype. It's not a lack of talent on his part, it's just a really bad decision. I have to suspect he's a guy who refuses to take direction. No one with any sense would want him to play his role in that way. But, for such a stereotype, he plays it pretty well. He'd be real good at amateur community theater, or 1980s voice acting, where the lack of standards or realism is expected. I guess he's a man behind his time, or above his station.

What it's annoying it's that's not even a real italian accent, especially if it is from central ( like Gucci family) or northern italians, but it's a grotesque overaxaggeration of southern italian dialects like neapolitan and sicilian ( the ones that emigrated the most to Usa), which are extremely different to standard italian ( and not intelligible by other italians, not even kidding).

Oh that Jared Leto rant was good for my soul, it really was. He ruins EVERYTHING he’s ever in. I was cautiously optimistic for Blade Runner 2049 but could barely get through it because of him. He makes my skin crawl. Wouldn’t know talent if it beat him repeatedly in the face and uses “method acting” as an excuse to be a massive a-hole. Why on Earth does this creature keep getting work?!

At Nicolas Cage doesn’t publicly brag about how brilliant he is at method acting and that playing the joker was the equivalent of giving birth out of his prick hole (a real quote by Leto). I think the idea of it being an unintentional comedy only comes from people thinking they're better than it. Leto aside it's entirely aware of what it's doing. The wedding scene is soundtracked by Faith - George Michael. Pacino enters the film going "whatTTTT iss ThiSSSSSS" looking at a newspaper. It is in on the joke.

I'm sorry, but I just have to make up an excuse for Ridley Scott being an older gentleman and people do get cranky and intolerant with age, because otherwise I'd hate to admit that the director of quite a few movies I love dearly is one of the worst self-unconscious hypocrites out there. I mean, contempt for your audience always goes down so well, especially from someone who thinks I am so dumb I am not going to believe the characters are Italian unless they speak English with a fake accent. Seriously, I don't understand why it's okay to call out shows like Emily In Paris for shit like that, but Ridley Scott more or less gets a pass, even though he is not only consistent with this, but he has been quite vocal that it's not "an honest mistake", he just doesn't care.

I'm really surprised that Mark didn't smash the whole movie all together. Jared Leto is the least of its problems. The movie is all over the place. One scene is a serious drama, next one - bad parody, another - sitcom. It's an hour longer than it should be. The story itself lacks congruity. And the main bit - wtf happened to the soundtrack there? It's truly shockingly aweful. I think Al Pacino, Lady Gaga, Adam Drive are giving one of their best performances there. I was blown away by them. It's shame that the editor has thrown it all into a bin.

Rome, 21 Dec - We did an experiment: we went to see House of Gucci knowing that we most likely wouldn't like it. Well, the film is very bad, much worse than we expected. The room, ca va sans dire, was packed - never before seen such a crowd in the era of Covid. You know, Lady Gaga shoots. But Ridley Scott performed an unworthy operation and is doubly guilty, having shot absolute masterpieces in the past. House of Gucci, all the clues are already in the title In fact, the title is already a clue in itself: a film about Americans who make Italians. And it does not matter that some of them, starting with the protagonist, have Italian origins. It is not enough to save the film from the clear feeling that like the Gucci brand it has no longer had anything to do with Gucci for some time, so Scott's film has nothing to do with the Tuscan family. There is Jared Leto, who plays Paolo Gucci, the foolish son of Aldo Gucci (Al Pacino at his worst, the caricature of a mafia boss), who looks like a puppet of Pulcinella as much as he gestures. On the contrary, there is Jeremy Irons who plays Rodolfo Gucci as if it were Laurence Olivier who plays a nineteenth-century England aristocrat. Adam Driver then, who plays Maurizio Gucci, is a very good actor wasted in making a nerd that in Italy as a stereotype (yet) does not exist.
