House Call: How do I balance my hormones naturally?

“My hormones feel so out of balance” a female patient will tell me. “I’m tired of feeling crappy and terrible all at the time. Do I need to do hormone replacement to feel better, or is there a natural way to get my hormones in balance?”

Good points. Protein is always important as it contains cholesterol which is the precursor of progesterone. Many women do not eat enough protein. Bio-identical progesterone supplementation made a huge difference in my life. All the doctors wanted to do was prescribe estrogen which I knew I didn't need. Progesterone also helps brain health and keep blood pressure low. Stress also reduces the levels of progesterone as cortisol is produced instead. Please spread the word.

There's another problem with not eating enough protein (various meats). Meats contain TYROSINE, an amino acid chain that is a precursor to DOPAMINE FORMATION. Low dopamine => low motivation, inability to concentrate, depression, cold hands & feet, mood swings.

Protein yes. Veggie proteins do include the amino acids. But you do need to make sure you eat enough, and most women don't do that. (I recommend a pea protein shake like the one from garden of life). Your body makes its own cholesterol- I have a cholesterol of 130 and don't eat meat or dairy. It's actually a little high because I eat too much saturated fat 😄

i like the fact that @ every lecture dr Hyman asks the question: why. why people have hormonal imbalances/dis-balances? he is willing to look at the root of the problem and not just give a recommendation for a synthetic or natural hormone.

My breast cancer was "hormone positive". Apparently majority of women has a hormone positive breast cancer. My oncology doctor, of Chinese heritage, told me to stop eating soy b/c it contains plant hormone/estrogen. I did. And 20 yrs later I am still here. I would never ever recommend anybody to eat soy.

Thanks so much for discussing this. I need to cut out the booze...not hard to do. I eat organic and only non-wheat flour as I'm horribly gluten intolerant. Does that help about the flour? I don't use much anyway. How about meal replacement shakes? I use one called Shakeologly - have you heard of it? If you could ck and give your assessment as I'm not sure if this helps or hurts me. I'm 49 and been in menopause since my late 30's. Right now I'm on an anti-depresant that helps with the hot flashes but I have HORRIBLE insomnia. HELP!! Getting back on track on the exercise. Any help you can give is appreciated.

How do I cure my chronic migraine? I've had it for almost 5 years now, since the age of 16. I assume that it's been caused by a hormonal imbalance due to starting progesterone pills when I was 16, but I am still unsure. Will my hormones naturally balance themselves if I take your advice after getting non-hormonal contraception?

Have you ever been checked for PCOS? I had all the symptoms you did and went on a PCOS diet and now I have none. The diet is basically no gluten, no dairy (which you're already doing), no grains and no high GI foods. I basically eat lots of green veggies, low sugar fruit like apples and berries and soaked beans (im vegan too). It's boring but it works and it's worth it to have clear skin and no cramps!

Most people don't experience some of the physical problems that I an going through, and I don't know what the best way is to approach what is going on. I am 63, and have recently had a MRI on my back, which shows my Spondylolisthesis to be 60% slippage, and they found a tumor growing on my spinal cord. I went to a surgeon who does not want to operate on me, because he is afraid that he will make my pain worse. The tumor is benign and has infiltrated my pelvic floor. I am on constant pain medication to help me manage the pain, which is awful. I cannot walk very far or stand for very long. I have been trying to lose 50 pounds, and discovered these problems after a weight training session at my gym, and have been down for the past year or more. Is there any way for me to work around my limitations and still lose the weight? What can I do to help my physical being. I fear that I will not live to be very old if I am as sedentary as I have been. No doctors will advise me.

Can you please explain how you are suppose to take these? Thanks.

We have tried this already, and there has been no medication that will numb the pain that is not a problem for my liver. I try to do liver cleanses at least twice a week, and I take Milk Thistle.. Sometimes, when there are no Holistic or Homeopathic doctors in your area, or you cannot afford to travel and pay for one in another city, you do your best to research and try to heal yourself. I don't know what else to do.
