Hotel Adelphi - BBC - 1997 - Episode 1
Ойын-сауық
Hotel Adelphi was a BBC "fly on the wall" production giving viewers a rare glimpse of life behind the scenes of the Britannia Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. The series first aired 3 November 1997 on BBC1 with the first episode receiving viewing figures on 11 million. The series was narrated by Andrew Sachs.
In the first episode, it's the Grand National weekend - the busiest three days of the year for the Adelphi.
This was taken from a VHS of the original broadcast. I think it looks alright for 22 years old!

ahha I went there for a xmas party in 1999 and there was a fit French barman called Cedric I had a dance with. His scouse colleagues were dancing with my mates and Eileen came storming onto the dancefloor somewhere between Mi Chico Latino and Moloko Sing It Back roaring 'stop fraternising with the guests' 🤣🤣

I remember the Adelphi got so much stick from the public when this programme aired. Here they were, cashing-in on what was essentially a crisis. Meanwhile, many locals opened their homes to stranded racegoers, offering their spare bedrooms or whatever they could. The people of Liverpool were the real stars that weekend. The Adelphi just brought shame...

Been working in this hotel recently and the rooms are absolutely disgusting
This place has massively gone down it's almost sad. They heyday has long gone.
So pleased you uploaded the videos. You wouldn't have the rest coming up by any chance? RIP Brian Birchall - the duty manager as was. He passed on this year. Now urging people to ''Just cook will ya". In the next life.

I have some sympathy with the drunk guy at the end - you've booked a room, even presented yourself - albeit too early to have enter but nonetheless confirming you will be using the room - told to come back later then, upon coming back later told you in fact came back too late.

I would stay on a park bench in the summer months as long I seen the sights of Liverpool which I wanted to see in the first place I wouldn't give a foot where I slept you could always find a cafe for breakfast & the toilets for a wash I went to Blackpool years ago and slept in the car because I couldn't find a B&B on my price range I could find plenty of B&Bs which were well expensive to my pocket I said f*** that I'd rather sleep in the car then pay that sort of money which I did

I'm interested in the Adelphi from a much different angle , i.e.. The 1941 (Liverpool) Wartime Period. The... "Abelph !"...was a very Respectable Hotel. Open every night, etc, ... Regardless of the Air Raids /Falling Bombes /etc. Lots of "Hotty" , local, War Factory girls"...They flocked there, to meet-up with , the upper class, Soldiers, Sailors and Air Force Pilots, etc. It's popular Dance Band, Beautiful Dance floor, Comfy chairs, and slurpy Drinks, etc. They were Liverpool's best. If , for example ,YOU, were a junior war-officer type, and ,on leave, and ,looking for a Hot Chic, to BED ,with, ... All , before you eventually had to return back to your Unit/Ship/Bleny-Bomber/ thing,/etc. .. (and then also possible death etc.) ... Then The Adelphi was the best place to be ! PS. Above story stuff, is all in the Mini Series, that me and others, are presently developing. Don't hold your breath BUT don't miss it, either....

The funny thing is the grand atrium area where me and my mate were drinking our vile instant coffee was full of people eating Mc D and takeaway Costa coffees, obviously don't have a strict policy and don't care about sales 😀
