Horus Heresy: How to Build a Legion - Alpha Legion
This is the first Legion focused video in our series of ‘How to Build a Legion.’ We debated on how best to go through the Legions. Do we do a few at a time? Do we group them by tactics? Start at the 1st Legion and work our way down the line? Once I realized how in depth these were going to be, I decided to try something a bit different. While GW may cover the Legions in numerical order, we’re going to mix it up and go in reverse.
Starting with Alpha Legion and counting down the roster, we are going to cover the complexities and considerations of building an army for each of the Legions. Hopefully this is useful not only to those interested in the Alpha Legion, but for all Legion players, giving them an understanding of the concepts behind army building in Horus Heresy, and an idea of what each Legion can bring to the table. I hope you enjoy!

Thank you for going in reverse, being an Alpha legion fan first and foremost, I had anticipated not having any videos like this one for months because most would be going in numerical order.

This is a super useful video to me, as I’m starting an AL force myself. One thing I’ll note is that a couple of the original Gal Vorbak were infiltrating Alpha Legionaries. All but one died, and he informed his legion. It is perfectly fluffy to have AL Gal Vorbak. Pretty sure it’s in Book 8 Malevolence
their legion trait is more powerful than it seems really. Those extra 2" are super important (that´s what she said), especially for charge rolls. Love the vid, looking forward for other legions!

And right?! How do you choose?! Such fun options.
That just solved all the problems of my main alpha legion miniature collection. Loyalist Headhunter Leviathal with various volkite squads, Angels tears through Rewards of Treason and thanks to Moebius I can add in a Knight Errant with some Sisters of Silence... Definitely a surprise that my loyalist selection transfers directly to the tabletop. As for the Traitor force, think of more of a Iron Warriors style force with a squad of Kakophoni, ordnance (medusa and vindicator), assault squads, dreadnoughts and I might have to add in a Spartan and a Cerberus next to the Terrax pattern assault drill... Overall really happy with the rules vs the previous mutable tactics...

Alright, actually awake now... So Morbius would be a wasted trait as it doesn't apply. The important note there is a loyalist force with a loyalist allied detachment. So it's all good. (Can't wait for them to release the rest of the books for proper cross referencing...)
I would love to see this done for Dark Angels! With all the wings there are so many ways it could go, and honestly it's hard for me to figure out what to focus on as a new-to-heresy player
@lokalnyork

I think DA really benefit from 2 (halves) of this box, to really push in particular "wing" direction. Either 80 (yes, in any configuration) of Bolter Dudes with Spartans (exactly 1500 points before any upgrades/extra units) for MAXIMUM STORMWING, or literal Deathwing (20 Terminators, again in 2 Spartans, 1200 base, throw in some MkVI as Veterans) 30K.
I'm curious if the keywords line up to let a squad of Contekar Terminators be the warlord in an alpha Legion list. I'd love to have The Coils of the Hydra that started on the board with 3 set of treacherous different terminators including the warlord(s).
I recently found out about the Blackshields. I wonder how they would work out in HH?
10x Inner Circle Cenobium, all taking power daggers and thunder hammers to get them to 4 attacks on the charge and 6 on the sarge with digital. Mayhaps even in a spartan with my Lernaeans.
I love Hydra Ultramarines idea, just stick their decals *upside down*.

Honestly I'm super intrigued by running a generic ROW legion recon company. Recon squads seem super strong with the extra 2" AL rule, plus beakie marines just beg to have cloaks and suppressors/scopes added to their bolters.
I have Alpharius and I want to include a Fellblade and one contemptor dread naught Any suggestions for filling out the rest of the list? Fantastic video !
@blackbriargaming5483
2 жыл бұрын
You'll struggle to put Alpharius and a Fellblade in the one list, as there's a restriction on percentage of points. Obviously depends on points level, but check out the rule around it so that you're prepared. Alpharius LOVES dreadnoughts. He has this cheeky rule where he can make them deepstriking. Now. Self regulation is key here. I think three deep striking dreadnoughts is enough for any list, and taken as one talon, gives you elite slots to fill out with other cool stuff. Alpharius needs a retinue, terminators are best, they can deep strike with him too. From there it's just down to taste. Alpha Legion loves headhunter kill teams, long range firepower, anything armed with a nemesis bolter. You do you! :D
Didnt see it in the comments, but all 3 units taken by the right of do indeed need to be the same unit. Gw addressed this in a faq
Can I use tyrant siege terminators in my alpha legion? So that counts as 1 I can select 2 more? How many of ea special unit can I use drom the 3 selections. Do I make them look like alpha legion as for as colors or do they look like their origin legion? Edit nvm I saw the image I color thr siege terminators with alpha legion colors .
I personally went for 10 man Iron Havoc's with Lascannon for my AL as a Reward of Treachery for Headhunter Leviathal
I have a unit of Suzerain I want to use in a Headhunter Leviathal detatchment - can I have them in a Spartan?
Has losing Specialist Weapon on the power dagger persuaded anybody to put something other than a power fist as the second CCW on their tac squads?
Excellent video. I've started a Salamanders Legion but am a little let down by their rules. (and fluff tbh). Would you say they are a good choice for Mobius? The Pyroclasts and Firedrakes are a tad pricey though and require transports :(
@blackbriargaming5483
Жыл бұрын
A pyroclast heavy force makes for a great Mobius choice as your opponent HAS to deal with them, especially if you've made them line. You do have to be creative with getting them up the table though, depending on your opponent.
@Plaukainis
Жыл бұрын
@@blackbriargaming5483 well, I've always used Rhino's. So not that creative :D
The main problem with the new HH GW made it seem like this can be split up into two forces so new players will be in a bad way when it comes to having an army aka they wont have an army. They advertised this as a two basic armies going against each other and many people will split a box up as they have done with many boxsets over the decades.
Well, it turned out the mkVI of the core box are not that great for Headhunters. The palm of the left hand is attached to their bolters so switching in the FW combi-bolters, which don't have palms on them, is quite problematic.
Looking forward to emo batman!
Coils of the Hydra: Rewards of Treachery was ruled that all of the units must be the same unit, not just from the same legion. Its pretty much a junk Rite of War now.

Preator or Dynat (who has a mini version of Alpharius shenanigans) if you want to run a RoW. Both work fine. If you're not planning on running a RoW, you could skip them and go the cheaper option. It comes down to consuls that mess with the enemy/support your own plans. Master of Signals does SO much if you're not deep striking. Exodus/Vigilator are both excellent.
