"carter don't lay down quite yet" AMAZING ??? Much more than just plain old amazing ! Right on point ! You talk to them and treat them as human and they begin to react and understand as human !!! If you treat them cruel and abusive, GUESS WHAT, they WILL become MEAN and unmanageable !!! These animals are smarter than us as they have, ONLY, about a 150 million year head start on human evolution !!! The ONLY thing that humans possess, which places us in a superior position over all the other animal, and plant species, is our sophisticated and articulate development of communication(speech). They have their own form of communication through not only vocalization but physical GESTURES as well. Soooo... Don't attempt to sell ANY animal, or plant species, short because YOU don't have the ability 2 understand THEIR form of communication !!! They're doing what they've been doing for over 150 million years !!! That's why it's easy for them to understand sentences with a minimal of time and input. Treat them respectful, admirable and humane, THEN AND ONLY THEN, will you EARN their respect, admiration AND humanity. A similar analogy to communication is a human child growing up in a multilingual family. Think about it seriously ! Commander Video signing off !!! Good travels Space Cadets wherever you may roam (;>) ! Also consider what Mother Terra will do to us if we step too far out of line !

I'm not the biggest fan of the rope method, this is the best way I have seen it used so far, asking the horse in stages gradually over time to increase comfort and understanding.

I taught my stud to lay down as a yearling, we have a very good trust bond between us so it wasn't hard to teach it to him as a baby, now I just have to tap his ankle with the tow of my boot and he will lay down.. it is very fun to show off to people and if done right doesn't hurt the horse and also gets you more respect in their eyes

***** a stud is not a pony. For one a stud is an unfixed male. She states this because unfixed males are usually hard to train and be in control of because they have their more wild tendencies because of the development of their hormones. And a pony is a horse 14 hands or smaller. Please know your facts before you go around telling people what to call their horses

I love that you say to be slow with the horse and give the cue. You can tell you love the horse, BUT it can be done without the rope in the beginning. Also, there will be people that will get frustrated and abuse the rope.

This is going over the rope method. There's multiple methods. If you aren't experienced enough to be using the rope method you don't need to do it. Rope method is generally advised to only be done by extremely experienced and patient people because of how quickly and easily it can go wrong

Notice when Pat picks up the foot Cutter doesn't attempt to lie down. Only when Pat applies the halter pressure to back up does he lower. This is because the horse is well trained enough not to assume, only to respond.

Hi. Has your horse ever got confused and attempted to lay down after you taught it with say having his feet shod or picked out? Because of the cue tending to be the picking up of the front leg. Thanks in advance for your answer.

+Kylie Kummer I'm sorry to have to disagree with you about causing them pain when you teach them to lay down. Horses lay down naturally in the pasture or stall, so it's no different. And as a teenager I helped teach horses to lay down and we didn't cause our horses any pain at all. Not all teaching methods for horses needs to cause pain - if it does, you need to find a new way.

If you want him to continue to lay down when you cue him I would teach that first. Since he likes to do it then I would just use whatever cue you want before he lays down. Once he seems to be getting that then when you don't give the cue and he starts to lay down lunge his butt or in the very least make him move for a bit. After he's done that a few times cue him to lay down, that should help really cement that he should only lie down when cued(I would also cue him to lie down in different areas other than the arena to help confirm for him that the cue does mean to lie down). If you continue that he'll get it down fairly quickly. If you dont want him to lie down at all then just make him move when he tries.

The hobble is NOT necessary nor is is safe. This video is showing a horse that has been trained in a forceful way that leads to submission. His horse listens to his commands and instantly responds because he has been made to feel he has no choice and the follows directions to avoid consequences which clearly aren't an issue anymore but they were and the horse knows what will happen if he isn't performing as the grandkids' push button pony. I am quite sure I'll get plenty of hat comments but you can save it. Typing out any reason why this is correct or why you feel I'm wrong won't change my opinion. I have been riding for 40 years, I am a trainer and an instructor.

It builds trust with your horse, gets the horse respectful of you (because you are getting him to lay down when he normally wouldn't), and its a pretty cool trick. I use it mostly for the trust. It makes my training go faster because the horses trust me more. I don't use rope though, and definitely not a saddle, but everyone has there own way.
