There was a female horse used I believe in the Korean War, and was tasked to carry injured soldiers from battle to medical tents for help, and to carry ammunition out to soldiers in battle. During battle her handler was shot and killed, and instead of standing there clueless without any direction, she just continued going to fallen soldiers, waiting for someone to put them on her back, so she could take them to medical, all with no handler, all while BEING SHOT by bullets, she just kept doing her job loyally. She was honored afterwards and moved back to the US to retire. They told us that story at the Horse and Cavalry Museum we have here. She even held official rank in the US military.

Her name was Sergeant Reckless. The story is insane. She was decorated (including 2 purple hearts and like 7 other medals) and held an official rank. She served in many battles in the Korean War. At first her job was to carry heavy ammunition up rice patties to get the heavy ammunition to the "reckless" gun(where she got her name). She was trained to carry 9, 24 lb shells to the gun. She was also trained to lie down when under fire, to avoid barbed wire, and to run for cover. She was nicknamed Sergeant Reckless (at first it was just a nickname, but she was actually promoted to a real Sergeant by the marine commandar later because he was so impressed by her abilties in battles). Her fellow marines took the rank so serious that they threatened to take it to the court martial for disrespecting her rank. Over time her role became far more than just carrying ammunition. She would carry medical supplies to dangerous outposts and carry wounded soldiers to safety. She was also trained to lay communication wire down (the marines said she could lay more wire down than a dozen marines could). She was also trained to shield marnies from fire. (In turn they would put their protective jacket on her in attempt to shield her). She also was just a huge moral support to the marines. She was their comapnion and they took better care of her then themselves. In the Battle of Outpost Vegas (one of the most horrific battles of the war) in just one single day of fighting, she made over 50 round trips up rice patties and steep mountain cliffs. At first she made these trips with a marine leading her, but the casualties grew so great that they couldn't spare any extra hands. She made most of the trips by herself and would stop to pick up the wounded on the way. She was wounded twice and still continued to make trips by herself. It was not uncommon of her to make trips 30 miles or more by herself while carrying wounded. It is unknown how many lives she saved, but it was alot. She survived the Korean War and it was petitioned to ship her to the US to live out her retirement. Eventually she was shipped to the US where 1700 marines marched by her and gave her a 19 gun salute to honor her. She lived on an army base in Califonia until her death in 1968. The marines later erected a statue of her and she was one of the members of Life Magazines 100 all time heroes. Unfortunately her story has been forgotten over time. They should really make a movie about it. The closest story I can compare it to is "Hacksaw Ridge" but with a horse instead of a man.

@@-desertpackrat yes I have been thinking they should make a movie on it for a few years now. I think if done right it could actually be a blockbuster as the story is just amazing. Another interesting story about a horse called Jim Key. He is believed to have been the smartest horse in history and the story is kind of emotional. It also has to do with interesting history (with slavery, the Civil War, the late 19th century). That could also make a good movie.

Reminds me of my Susie we went out for a little ride I was bareback the weather was getting bad in the open pasture lightning struck it scared her she jumped I fell and couldn't get up. Susie literally laid down next to me and waited until my father realized something was up and came looking for us. It took a minute to recuperate silly Susie came to my window everyday to say hello she couldn't wait for me to come back out and play. Now don't get me wrong I'm a dog girl too I got my babies but there's nothing like the love of a horse.

Now THAT seems more like certain love! Horses will always attempt to get home if they know how. So the fact she laid with you is a very sweet thing! Horses can also be trained to stand where they are left upon dismount (but that takes training, unlike “going home” which is more instinct based), so you have yourself a very good horse! But you don’t need me saying it! ❤ Ps I am not saying that this horse does not care for her, it’s just, to a horse person, this video story is not amazing. Still absolutely happy huck knew how to get home though and still sought out human contact which made the husband see huck was all tacked up, loose, and no wife! Shew 😢 either way he helped save her life after the incident!

I fell off my horse bareback because a cow spooked the both of us. Neighbor always has new field ornaments in his front pasture that we were walking by, seen a new ornament, walking by and one of them isn't an ornament but a cow that was sleeping. We had spooked the cow, it jumped up suddenly, scaring the crud out of me and my horse bolted sideways. I lose balance instantly but still hung on and had to let go. I landed on my right side, everything turned white and felt myself rolling over onto my back and then my right side. I came to my senses later and rolled back over to my horse standing right over me but her nose was right on my face wondering why in the heck I'm laying on the ground. I was thinking she was gonna run off because she was really spooked. Last I saw her she was still running sideways.

This lady described horses perfectly: a 1,500 pound toddler. I grew up on a horse farm, and still own horses, and they are very sweet and childish, and they have an excellent sense of your emotions. When my mother died they wouldn’t leave me alone, they kept trying to get into the house, and they would stare at me through the windows. My mother didn’t live with me, and they hadn’t seen her in weeks, but they somehow knew I was upset even though they never saw me crying.

Animals with a sense of humor are the best. This horse reminds me of a horse I met at riding lessons as a kid. He was a big Bay named Rex. He loved to plunk a hoof on my booted foot. He would only lift his foot off when I politely asked. He liked to flatten my coat buttons with his teeth being careful not to nip me or take the button off and he would lift his upper lip like he was laughing at the joke. I’m very short and Rex showed understanding as I struggled to get on as even with the stirrups all the way down it was still a long way up. Rex would stand perfectly still for me. With other people he would keep moving. He’d walk ahead or turn in circles making other people struggle. But for me Rex knew I needed no movement. After the lesson I’d pat him on the neck telling him he was so good and he’d gently bump me with his nose as if the say you’re welcome. He’s long gone no doubt having met him in the early 70’s. He sure loved flattening my coat buttons but never nipped me by accident. Your horse reminds me so much of Rex. He had personality!

Sorry about your accident but so thankful Huck was there to get help. As horse people know, once they bond with you they will take care of you. I had a horse, big quarter horse, when I was around 5 years old. We were at a rodeo in a small town and I was sitting on him just outside of the arena. A man walked up (not a stranger, someone my dad knew) and I remember him saying "hey little lady where's your." He only got that far when my horse turned his big old head around, took the man's arm in his mouth and pulled him back away from me. No one, and I mean no one got near me when I was on that horse. Huck knew to take care of you too. Such a beautiful thing to do.

What a very very good boy. I used to do competitive show jumping and I had a gorgeous 18 hand Hanoverian beauty named Moose who was scared of his own shadow! We were going over a jump and he refused and I got tangled up in the reigns and fell off of him and he ended up hurting himself because he didn't want to trample me. I couldn't believe it. It could have been a devastatingly bad accident, but Moose sacrificed his own safety and health to not step on me. Rest easy Moose, you'll always be my angel.

@jenell horses are easy. They let you know how they feel with various signals and make u earn their trust. I love horses. I grew up with them. They’re just like humans- they all have different personalities. They can also sense how you feel and they feed off your energy. The ones that are loved and cared for are very gentle while ones that have been abused by humans have issues. Honestly there’s nothing to be afraid of with these gentle giants (except maybe the occasional foot or 2 if u don’t pay attention to your feet in relation to theirs or not being aware of where you are in relation to them if they shift their weight). I have ridden horses since I was literally a baby (ofc an adult held me while riding when I was a baby, but by 3 I was up riding on my own... when I was 9 I rode this ridiculously large horse that I had to be lifted onto 🤣🤣🤣 and he was always super gentle and patient with me)

I don’t know very much about horses but I understand they are so empathetic that they’re almost telepathic. As herd, prey animals, they mentally link to their herd and react to their thoughts and feelings before they’re expressed as a survival tactic, reacting to danger at the earliest possible moment. If one is bonded to you, they will do this with you.

This seems so sweet to people who aren't horse owners. Horses ALWAYS run home. That's just where they go because they like being by their barn, where their FOOD is and the horses they know and love and the dad would also be someone that he would want to be near considering he had no rider. Of course he would want her to be found and helped but he didn't run home because of that, he ran home because that's just what horses do. He is really a character and absolutes his mom and wants to be around her all the time. I'm really happy they found each other and that he has a forever home with her. It's a special relationship for sure. I'm also very happy to know that mom is OK and has made a full recovery (from the sounds of it). What a terrible fall to break your nose and fracture your skull. I was a traumatic brain injury nurse for 15 years and the head is a very scary place to be injured, it could have been a LOT worse. I'm happy the husband was home to go find her and it didn't end up more serious. It's a sweet thought to assume the horse went for help but it wasn't really why he went home. Terrorizing the neighborhood alone has danger written all over it in the mind of a horse. He knows safety is at his place with who and what he knows. Keep in mind too, he was a rescue. He could have some extra fear based on his experiences before she bought him. I'm so happy he has such an incredible personality and is entertaining the whole family...and himself 🤣

Wow he is beautiful one of a kind gem I've been riding horses for 40 years and to have a horse like Huckleberry is a very special I've had a small and I mean a Very small handful like him but they don't come across very often and when I sore those white eyes he was giving you with that droop look I was already inlove with him what a beautiful treasure you have their I had a simmerlar horse that would spook at dogs and after a few weeks ground work interducing him with different dogs and dog sounds he was more relaxed but you have a true gentleman their he has a beautiful chilled relaxed vibe about him I think Huckleberry is going to bring you years of joy treasure every moment with him

When I was younger I rode a pony and I would only ride him. he was my favorite. I would come into the barn and give him treats before we went riding. One day when I was riding him, the blue angel flew by and scared him. he skidded to the side and I fell off. He waited until I was all way off him before he took off. He did come back around after woulds to make sure I was okay. he was the best and I miss him ever day.

When I started my riding lessons, the horse I was assigned threw me on the ground. Another horse, came straight to me and I was afraid she would have trampled me... Nope. She gave me a big lick like "it's ok, butt pain will end soon". And I chose to ride her for two years, until the pandemic, when she passed away due to a bad case of pneumonia.
