I think the demon symbolizes that unsettling feeling of getting older and dying. The more older you get, or the closer it gets, the more it scares you. I think the reason why it appears in their 18th birthday is because it is an age that is considered mature. The mind starts thinking about the future more, and that's what made them aware or finally see the demon. It also kinda makes sense that the mother says it's what made them thrive. The fear of dying and growing old pushes everyone to live a life that's worthwhile.

I think it's just them knowing when they'll die, so they are not afraid to do stuff with high risk. They just get the high rewards because they know it's not their time yet

The acting is top-notch. The family was completely unsettling, and the lead actress uncomfortable and bored. Phenomenal.

the thing i can't figure out is this: it's implied that the sentinel gets gradually closer over time as your death nears. it really couldn't be any other way. it's been in the family for generations, and if it could go from "he's far away" to "suddenly in your face" then it wouldn't be useful at all, death would sneak up on you as easily as anyone else. so it's weird that there were at least 2-3 people who already had the "gift" who seemed to be completely surprised by what happened. had they just stopped keeping an eye on their sentinel for years? did the sentinel just bamboozle them all, all of a sudden, in a way he never did to their ancestors?

I think the idea is that you know there is no risk of dying, so you can do the things most people would consider risky. Although, it doesn't really work considering you could still become ill, be paralyzed, go to prison, etc.

I noticed how Emily's Sentinel left the frame and wasn't anywhere near her the moment she entered the door way while the 3 other Sentinels were directly next to their own charges as the earthquake intensified. I don't know if it was intentional but under the presumption that this was an older constructed house being under the door frame might've been the safest place in the earthquake. (This does not hold true for modern houses.) I like to think that she just narrowly escaped death by jumping back where and when she did.

Plot armor is a bit useless if it disappers suddenly without previous warning... Btw, while I can see that working plot armor can be perhaps useful, I can't really think about specific use. Like, sure, you're basically immortal for the moment, so you can go and do some dangerous but profitable stuff... BUT, who says that you won't end up in jail or maimed and crippled or even in a life-long coma?

Not necessarily, there are three in the shot but almost all them turn their heads one at a time before the camera cuts. At least four people turned and looked. They can only see their own, so it's not a given anyone survives.

There were four. One behind the mom, and then the three with the others. Same basis just instead only three will live out of the whole family. You were still right though, just didn’t count the mom and daughter. So 5 out of the 9 will survive. Also thanks for pointing this out I didn’t even realize the multiple ones before I saw this and went back. :)

I do like that the mom and dad aren’t freaked out, they will understand “he’s like an old friend” and they look at him closely for the first time. The mom only looked scared because she waited 18years to share this gift with her daughter and hope she lives a good life, just to find out her own daughter’s time is up. It would be awesome to see a sequel or alternate timeline to this that the family then sense they all need to get out of their house which makes the men move farther away

@@smokinacestm like others mentioned, only a few died (youngest daughter, mom, dad, aunt, and the older aunt). The ones who looked up saw their “friend”, while the others just kept looking ahead in confusion.

I think that you are more likely to live each day like it is your last when you are forced to deal with your mortality. If you were told you 12 months to live, you would accomplish more in that 12 months than most people do in their entire lives.

@@davidduncan9050 Yeah, but the rate at which they approach isn't constant, per what happens in this short film. Once the family got into a dangerous situation, their sentinels all basically teleported behind them.

Hello fellow overthinker, I’ll try and explain in depth. This person has just turned 18 and is explained by her family that she has a gift. The gift is that there is this demonic/supernatural entity that appears once you turn 18, and this entity determines your life span. It does based on the distance it is from you; so if it’s very far away, your life span is very long, vice versa. Now some people might see this as a curse, knowing when you die might seem like a good thing to know at first, but it’ll naturally make you want to change fate’s course and alter the date of your death. In the video, the entity now appears much closer to her, and some of the other family members’ entities also have come closer. It doesn’t say diectly, but it appears that something like an earthquake happens, which takes the lives of most of the family members, specifically the ones who had their entities very close to them. How did they acquire this “gift” you may ask? It’s never stated directly, but that’s what’s nice about short films. It leaves it up to your imagination. Did a past generation make a deal with the supernatural? Were they cursed at one point, but now they see it as more of a gift? Anyways, hope this helps! Edit: typos

I guess, I understood it as it will come to the person who is going to die but it came into room to all of them because an earthquake killed them all. It wasn’t the creep because it is like a lifespan not a killer.

@@KushTaco20 I thought the same thing, but an earthquake seems like a rather weird way to end it all. Not as "scary" as I would have imagined. My initial thought had been that the sister (or whoever that disapproving lady was) left the room to go get a weapon and then killed them all, and that's why all of their monsters were there: because they were about to be murdered by a family member who... maybe had had enough of the monster thing? I dunno. And then the champagne glasses toppling over and that was just because of the, like, scream of the monsters propagating through from whatever universe they're from or whatever.

I don't have a strange ass family that likes to have this thing as a gift & if you make it to 50 it's as each birthday is more like one step closer to having this thing as your best friend !!! They don't look all that bored just scared cause they all see it up close so you can guess what's next & from the way her sister acted she knew what sort of gift was coming. I could be wrong & it really just came for some cake ...

It wasn’t cause it was everyone’s time to die, it was her time, and since you see more then 1 in guessing the other sentinels are some of her families, which meant it was also their time to die, since the room wasn’t full of them then not all the family must have died from that
