    If you are a horror game developer, I have something for you. I have created a Discord group exclusively for horror game devs and content creators. The goal is that one day it will be the best resource for both devs and creators. A place where we can not only network and collaborate, but also a place where we can help each other out. A place where other devs can help with questions, and a place that helps small developers get some free publicity and much much more! I've just started it, so it's not my grand vision just yet, but I'm sure as people join it will become that. If you are interested, and are a horror game developer or horror game content creator, send an email to my KZread email address. The link should be on my homepage under "Links". Let me know either what you're working on or the name of your channel and i will send you an invite link to the server.

    Just started working on my horror game using this plugin. I must say that my first looks of the plugin itself reminds me of a lot of published horror games out there! I feel just the change of assets and adding different ghosts would not be enough to add a unique aspect to the game. The first thing that came into my mind was to create another player movement control or edit the one we currently have. I also feel like changing sounds of everything in the game would also be a good way to adapt a unique aspect to the game. And finally working on new animations for every function, asset and movement. Don’t get me wrong, I will definitely use this plugin for my game, as it is an insanely good baseline to start from. Just adding your own “touch” to the project would make this plugin a match made in heaven for Horror games! Hope to make you all test my project out once the development process gets there! ❤👊

    That's awesome! When it comes to movements and sounds, it all comes down to what you as the creator really have in mind. In my opinion, custom assets alone would be enough to make most of the people that play your game happy. Like for me personally, I play tons and tons of horror games, but I don't notice right away if a game was made in one engine or another based on movement, animations or sounds, but assets usually give me a good idea. But I'm not trying to deter you. It is definitely true, the more you make yourself, the better. There is no argument there. Just giving my opinion where your time could best be allocated. Good luck, and definitely let me know when you have something playable. I would love to take a look at it. It sounds like you want to make something very special.

    @@The_Chad_ you’re right, I think I have just fried my brain to a point where even a small little camera movement or audio makes me realise what plugin has been used haha, and I believe for most gamers it wouldn’t matter as much. Thanks for the input i will be sure to use this to my knowledge as everything coming from gamers who play games is the most crucial suggestion which I could benefit from. Will be sure to hit you up when the game progresses! And I appreciate your words :)

    @@cutecutebethoven If you are willing to learn everything you'll have to learn to do it on your own, more power to you. That will definitely give you the freedom to create something closer to your exact vision. But I do really think this is a great tool for people to use to make their first game and see if it is something they really like to do. That is if they use their own monsters. That is one of the most important parts to a horror game for me now since I have seen so many of the same ones so many times. Many of the other free assets are very common too, but it is so much easier to look past those than it is to look past the same monsters over and over again. Good luck!

    I use this for my games but I do try and use a lot of custom assets and also use things in ways other than how they were intended to be used. I think it would be cool if other devs customized it a bit more too. Right now I'm working on a custom template of HE for my future games by adding water materials, investigation events, changing the menus and etc. My hope is that while many of my own games might be similar, despite still using HE, my game's can at least look different than other HE devs.

    At least you customize some stuff. I'm pretty sure A LOT of devs don't do anything custom at all, which I can understand if it's your first game. I just downloaded DOBD. I have a couple more Christmas horror games to get through, then I'll check it out.

    It’s a great template for sure. I have it too. My two complaints i have is that everybody using it, is using the exact same assets in their game. No imagination or effort to create their own. The second complaint is that horror Engine is actually coded pretty confusing for anyone to replace the assets with their own. I found out how, but it’s not easily done. Still, i wish the developers using this would show a bit more effort and use their own assets instead of just using everything here.

    @@xrcustomizing7102 I agree with you 1000% I see way too many horror games with the exact same assets anymore. Some of the games can still be good, but there are certain assets that when I see them for the 80th time, I can't help but to roll my eyes so hard, they almost fall out of my head. It seems like Horror Engine might be good to help people learn the basics of making their first game, but it shouldn't be relied on so much. At least not without some changes that make customization way easier.

    Are you apposed to people using horror engine for their games? I'm currently learning unreal engine and starting to realize why it takes so many people to make a game, it's a very good tool to learn, but I'm struggling with asking people to pay for it, that's the problem for me

  • @The_Chad_

    @The_Chad_

    I'm not opposed to it at all. It is an amazing tool. I only get frustrated when I see so many horror games that look the same. I just hope the guy that makes Horror Engine can either add way more assets, or make it much easier for people to import their own assets. But I really wouldn't be the one to ask. I'm just a player, not a developer. If you are interested in networking with other one-person devs that use Horror Engine, I sometimes have some watch my Sunday streams at 10PM EST. That's one place you might be able to network a bit, then get into some of their Discord's to network a lot more. Oh, and when it comes to asking people to pay, again, I'm no expert, but I like how itch.io has the option to provide the game for free, but people can also donate if they want. That might be somewhere to start, then once you feel it's ready from prime time, put it on Steam for whatever price you think it is worth to people. Starting a Discord would also be a good way to grow a community around the game and get feedback for improvements and the launch price and such.

    I couldn't agree more. That said, there are metric tons of lazy games that don't use Horror Engine over on itch.io. I'll also say, one of the most impressive solo indie games I've played as of late, Master of Puppets, was mad in Horror Engine I believe. That dev definitely stepped out out the mold though.
