Quick correction (Misreading on my part! My bad! -Chelsea): Freaks was not Tod Browning's last studio film. That would be Miracles For Sale, in 1939. However, after Freaks, Browning had tons of trouble getting his projects greenlit and was instead relegated to either horror pictures or projects with similarly disgraced actors.

Freaks is probably the least exploitative Exploitation film of all time. It treats the “freaks” as normal people with real emotions and relationships. It’s very fitting that two of the most “beautiful” people in the film are the villains. The scene where Hans finally comes to terms with the fact that Cleopatra is only using him for his money is genuinely heartbreaking.

An excellent film.
As a British person I can confirm that our tabloid culture is absolutely awful and so damaging when it comes to politics and more

The problem with the child drowning scene in Frankenstein is that when you see it now, the scene after the drowning, Frankenstein sits by the water and weeps. The next shot you always see is the father carries the daughter’s dead body. I know when you see it now, you get the idea and understand when he throws the little girl in the water the reason for it. You get his innocence. The sad thing is is weeping would have made that scene so brilliant.
While Seduction of the Innocent did lead to the Comics Code (self-censorship among comic publishers) because of the fears about delinquency, one of the major aspects of the book was that it interpreted super-heroes having secret identities as a metaphor for closeted homosexual men. He saw Batman and Robin having one identity during the day as upstanding citizens while hiding their other identities who have other values/morals. The led to the original creation of Batwoman and Batgirl as heterosexual love interests for Batman and Robin. The most ironic part is that a later recreation of Batwoman's character had her come out as a lesbian.
You really do have to roll your eyes when people unironically say “people are too easily offended these days” or the like

It's always super interesting for me to learn about censorship in the arts and media, and it's a shame how some scenes get lost to time. I love how thorough you guys are in your research and in making connections to historical trends! I always learn something new, and love the content. Keep up the good work!

there are some scenes that are cut for a reason sometimes they are one bad scene in a good movie or it was a scene the director hated.

I usually save dead meat podcasts for when I draw (cause I want to feel good and git educated when I do) but I miss these so much for me to wait. Love the work you do James and Chelsea! Much love yall ❤ Also from my classes in prof. Ed., IQ Is just one way of quantifying a quality. Less a ruler for measuring and more a unit system like the metric or english; they depend on point of views. Like how there are other ways to measure intelligence i.e. Howard Gardener's theory of Multiple Intelligences where instead of a single score for an overall assessment, cognitive abilities are separated into categories/intelligences such as Musical, Visual/spatial, Linguistic, Intropersonal, Intrapersonal, etc. (Just an extra bit of something to learn)

You realise we kicked the Puritans out, right? We got sick of them telling everyone else that they were doing Christianity wrong, and told them to stop trying to force everyone else to be Puritan, and then they all left for the Americas. In England, the Puritans were a tiny fringe movement that just got mocked by popular society. In the US, on the other hand...

I read somewhere (I’ll try to find it again), that viewing violent media has a correlation to slower and less severe appraisal of real violence. Basically after viewing violent media the participants who witnessed (staged) assaults took longer to intervene and rated them as less violent than participants who hadn’t seen violent media recently. So there is potential effect but it’s not the one people would think.

Key word staged... I know it's just my personal account but ive seen legit gore in real life and let me tell you seeing horror movies didnt make me any less digusted by what i saw. Also how do we know if the people in the study were equally emotionally stable? Like maybe psychopaths, sociopaths, and narcissists gravitate towards horror as opposed to the movies actually having any effect?
Great podcast. When I normally click on a video that's more than 20 min I end up not watching all of it or skipping through it but it's different with your videos. No matter how long it it I end up always watching all of it and never clicking or skipping or getting board during it.

I love these deep dives they're so fun, Chelsea works her ass off on them. The movie review should be The Hitcher now that you haven't even heard of it James!
Bringing high quality content like always, you're the best.
Frankenstein: I never understood why they go after the monster for killing the child. Her father leaves her to play alone next to an open body of water, comes back to find her drowned. He walks her dead body through town and blames an unseen killer, when he, in fact, simply fails to protect her properly. WE know that the monster killed her, but there's no way that her father does. PS; "Video nasties, luv!" I'm British and I loved it.

A lot of films were re-evaluated in the UK around 1999 as the long time chairman of the BBFC which had banned a lot of this stuff retired and they belatedly got into the 20th Century. Films like the Exorcist, Evil Dead, The Devils, TCM, that had been banned for ages. By coincidence Stanley Kubrick also died, releasing the self-banned Clockwork Orange.

I have a really funny story about The Exorcist: My mom and her many siblings grew up in a very catholic home, and she and her siblings had watched the Exorcist when they were very little. Not long after watching it, while my mom was sleeping in the same room as her sister, her sister starts to have a seizure. And my mom was terrified and thought she was possessed (because the movie was so terrifying for her). In the end everything was fine, her mom came in and calmed everything down. In addition, her brother who was terrified of the film the most is now an actual priest.
It’s interesting you mentioned the tabloid backlash against Child’s Play 3, because I remember being terrified of watching the Chucky movies when I was a kid specifically because I was told they inspired the Bulger case. This would have been around 1996 or so.
My ASl teacher in High School tried to play the original A Nightmare on Elm Street in class, but it wouldn't load lol. It was October of course, and I was so sad it wouldn't play because it's my favorite classic.
I know they're crazy busy with all the other aspects of the channel and life stuff going on, but I truly miss the podcast deep dives. They're my absolute favorite episodes and I wish they could do more.
