@MTMT-wm2dq Who is the Prime Minister in France, Spain, Portugal, UK, and so on? What a stupid comment! Is it the Prime Minister's fault if judges do not apply the laws? It is the judges who decide, not the Prime Minister. The judiciary in Italy is independent of politics. They decide whether or not to proceed with imprisonment. The usual idiotic comments from people on the left.

In the comments, they say they are Eastern European Gypsies, not Italians, and what is even more serious is that even if they freely commit crimes, the authorities do not respond or punish them. Please protect not only your own citizens but also foreign travelers.

Thank you for posting videos like this. We are in Rome now, yesterday, my caucasian husband was almost victimized by African peddler trying to be nice to my husband saying he will give him a bracelet for free while we were walking near the COLLOSEUM. When he was putting the bracelet on his wrist, I went back to my husband and told him to give it back because because they are scammers. The man reacted and ask me if I am a Filipino? In response, I shouted at him and we left. Without watching these kinds of videos before going to Rome, I would not be aware of their modus and how to intervene and pre-empt if this situation happens to us personally. We didn’t lose anything but our pockets zipped were undone several time. On our last day on the subway, a police officer pointed a group of underage teenagers to us and he pointed at our pockets, bags etc and warning us about them in body language. Very helpful. I was on a bus in Rome when a woman tried to pick my pocket. I was sitting and she was standing. I offered her my seat when she got on but she refused and preferred to stand. The bus went around a bend in the road. The woman acted like she lost her balance and was suddenly against me with her hand in my right pocket. I gave her a quick look and she moved away and said excuse me in Italian then promptly got off the bus. There was nothing in my pocket to take. If I do carry anything it’s lip balm or hand sanitizer. My neck wallet is my favorite way to carry valuables.

I think in Europe the sceptre of the Nazis and what they did to the Roma still weighs heavy on many people. So there is a certain reluctance in dealing with the social issues that arise here. For instance the common complaint is that they don’t integrate well with the general populace. Now we know when the last ‘integration’ happened and the implications.. so naturally it’s a very touchy issue that politicians or social workers (some of them) will not touch with a barge pole

I apologize on behalf of Italy. This unfortunatelly happens in most of our touristic cities. The same happens in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, London .. In Paris they had a Bosnian gypsy family arrested (finally!) after they found out how they were exploiting young children to steal in metros, train and bus stations. That gypsy family had a huge house outside Paris, spent millions for flashy weddings, had their favorite musicians from Serbia playing music and enjoyed high life. At the same time they would beat small gypsy kids who did not bring them several thousand Euros per week from metro theft. Those kids were not at school, some were pregnant, lived under constant terror to steal for their masters. The authorities would probably do nothing if it didn’t involve young children. It’s really disgusting how decent people have to live in fear, especially older citizens who are more trusting and slower in picking up who could possibly harm them. There are terrible stories of breaking into older people homes. Something needs to be done.

Great informative video that showcases the whole operation and how it works. Roma pickpocket's have been operating for as long as I can remember in Europe. Even in the early 80's one had to be careful when groups of Roma children suddenly surrounded you at various tourist spots. Constant awareness in any crowded area and the use of money belts will greatly reduce the chances of you being robbed. Stay safe.

Now, I keep my wallet in my front pocket, but on a strong fabric chain, which isn't hooked into a flimsy jeans belt hoop, but rather that wraps around my leather belt twice. Absolutely impossible for them to get now. Fool me once.... I stupidly thought I'm the smartest person and this could never happen to me. Great video! I was pickpocketed in Roma a few years ago by two teenage girls who took my valet - fortunately, I had only a few € coins. The reason they are so well organized and aggressive is that there is very little (if any) risk of being caught as the Italian police do not care about tourists being pickpocketed - in their minds this is not a priority. It's up to each individual to be alert and fight off these criminals.

It's the politicians that don't consider it a priority. The police are tired of arresting them and the courts not allowing them to be jailed. Elect politicians that will change the laws to allow for prison. NYC used to have a pickpocketing problem many years ago but we passed a law that repeat offenders get a minimum 1 year jail sentence. Pickpocketing went down by 95%.

I always made sure I put the secure hook so no one can try to open my wallet . I never put anything important in my purse and I have my mini wallet with safety features in front of me . I am always conscious of my surroundings and always on alert . I’m thankful of going to 6 Italian cities and nothing happened . It is very scary . It’s crazy how they work in teams . Foreign gangs (men and women) operate in Rome precisely because there are no organized Italians pickpockets there. As for laws, they exist as they do everywhere, but against a foreigner who is homeless and constantly moving from one camp to another, very little can be done. Apart from changing-attributing denominations, there were no serious measures, solutions for integration in the normal society. Also, the problem is that right now, the legal system does not care, prevent or cover this kind of “activity”. I can tell you though, from what I’ve seen in Romania, this community is excessively affluent, with a really decadent lifestyle, extravagant villas and high-end cars. There are also exceptions, with hard-working people, and some are highly educated.

Not just in Rome, Paris too. Children were used to block my way onto the metro, pretending to have a fight. My husband and baby were on the train and the kids were between us. The older of the three had her hand in my bag. I was so shocked I hit her arm and she quickly moved away as I jumped on the train. This was in 1976.

Very insightful video, in recent days small crimes like pickpockets are increasing anywhere in Europe, not only in Rome. We should all be cautious and some tourists from a safe country could be an easy target. So, spreading info online actually helps someone from getting their belongings stolen.

Growing up in Europe, I’ve definitely learned to always be ware of your belongings. Always keep your things close to you and not walking around with expensive items. One tip I could add is, if you have a backpack and you are entering the subway or train, always put it in on your stomach so you can always see your bag. If someone is an extra nice to you, always doubt them at first. Think about why they are being nice to you and what their intentions are. Stay safe!

The same thing happened to me in Rome a few years ago. I wanted to get on the train and was wondering why a young woman was blocking my way. I had to push her away. The young woman and an older woman were on the train. They both got off at the next train station. A short time later I realized that my wallet had been stolen!

@@LGAussie Unfortunately I didn't see this warning. I was in Rome with my daughters in 2016. We were outside Rome, my daughters ran ahead and I wanted to be the last to get on the train. The platform seemed empty and the train wasn't full either. So I guess I didn't pay attention to my bag. And I was completely confused when this young woman (not Italian) blocked my way in the door. I was so distracted by it that I don't think I noticed anyone was behind me (a young boy? I can not remember). Thank you for your interest, I like to tell the story to warn others and show how something like this can happen. It wasn't fun to rush to the police at the station in Rome (so difficult to find) block the bank cards and report the theft. I was also stupid enough to pocket the children's ID cards too . Luckily I had taken photos and we were able to fly home.

Never got stolen by anyone but by the rroma people, 3 times and got threatened that they will come for me if I call the police. They are a big problem even in my country.

@@camouflageartist8897'Semitic' is not a race, its a branch of the Afroasiatic language tree. Half of Italians do not speak an AfroAsiatic language. So no, that's inaccurate. And Rona are originally from India, their native language is an Indo-Aryan one not a AfroAsiatic Semitic tongue.
